The University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business is the business school at the University of Washington, Seattle. It was founded in 1917 and has nearly 46,000 alumni. The School is the second oldest institution of management education on the West Coast. It is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the European Quality Improvement System.[1] The School is one of four U.S. business schools to earn the EQUIS. The school offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Enrollment each year is about 2,500 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs and over 1,000 working professionals in its executive education seminars and lifelong learning programs. In 2006, U.S. News ranked the Business School 23rd in the nation and 7th amongst public institutions. An objective ranking of Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index by Academic Analytics ranks University of Washington #1 in research productivity in Business Administration and #8 in marketing.[1][2][3] UW Executive MBA is ranked third of its kind by The Economist.[4] UW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is ranked fifth best in the country by Entrepreneur magazine.[5]

History

On September 7, 2007, it was announced that the UW Business School would be named for Michael G. Foster. [2][3]

Academic

UW Business School prepares students for leadership in a knowledge-based economy. The school offers undergraduate program in business, full-time MBA program, Global MBA program, Evening MBA, Executive MBA, Technology Management MBA, Master of Professional Accounting in Auditing & Assurance and Taxation and Doctoral program. In 2005, there is a total of 95 full-time Business School faculty in 2005 with a total of 41 endowed chairs, professorships and research fellowships.The University of Washington Business Schools' faculty along with that of the University of Illinois at Chicago have been ranked No. 1 in productivity.

  • Business Undergraduate. UW Business School offers concentrations in areas of Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources Management, Information System and Marketing. Undergraduate program ranked 7th among public universities by U.S. News. The same source ranked the International Business program 12th in the nation, Finance 15th in the nation and Accounting ranked 14th in the nation.
  • Full Time MBA. The University of Washington MBA Program offers full-fledged curriculum, choices and connections for future business leaders of the world. The learning experience is especially designed to extend beyond the confine of the curriculum and the campus.
  • Evening MBA. The UW Evening MBA is designed for professionals who want both an MBA degree and the ability to continue working full-time. This is a three-year program. Evening MBA Program
  • Executive MBA. The University of Washington Executive MBA Program (EMBA) caters for mid- and senior-managers and executives. Participants are experienced executives from across North America and beyond. The UW Executive MBA Program is a part-time MBA that lasts for around 21 months.
  • Technology Management MBA. Nestled in the vibrant Pacific Northwest technology hotbed, the University of Washington Technology Management MBA is designed for professionals who have a passion for technology and want to gain the business knowledge and managerial skills to advance their career. The 18-month TMMBA Program offers a rigorous business management curriculum with a technology focus. With world-leading technology companies in the region, such as Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, Real Networks and Google, UW TMMBA provides rich opportunities for hands-on experience for technology-minded students.
  • Global MBA. The Global MBA Program is an accelerated one-year program for professionals with international business experience.
  • Global Executive MBA. The Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) Program is an 18-month course of study offered through a partnership between the University of Washington Business School and Sangnam Institute of Management at Yonsei School of Business, Yonsei University. The GEMBA provides essential international exposure for experienced managers. This program is open to anyone, worldwide, who meets the admission requirements and who has the ability to study in Korea and the United States.
  • MPAcc. - Auditing & Assurance and Taxation. Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc).
  • PhD Program. The UW Ph.D. Program[6] in Business Administration is a research-based program designed to train future thought leaders and scholars who will be on the cutting-edge in their discipline. The graduates are expected to preserve, generate and disseminate business knowledge and practices to students and practitioners worldwide. The University of Washington PhD Program offers concentration in the following areas: Accounting, Finance, Information System, Management (Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management), Marketing, Operations Management and Technology Entrepreneurship.

Campus

The University of Washington School of Business currently contains five buildings, with the prospect of a sixth.

  • Balmer Hall, named for Thomas Balmer, former president of the University Board of Regents.
  • MacKenzie Hall, named in memory of Prof. Donald Mackenzie, Chair of the Department of Accounting from 1949 to 1955.
  • Lewis Hall contains the Business Career Center, the PhD program office and other faculty and administrative offices.
  • The Bank of America Executive Education Center (which includes the James B. Douglas Executive Forum), the Boeing Auditorium, and the Albert O. and Evelyn Foster Business Library.
  • Eastside Executive Center. Located at 10220 NE Points Drive in Kirkland, Washington, the building houses the administrative offices for the Technology Management MBA.
  • UW Business School is currently raising funds to revamp and expand the current building complex. The new complex will be significantly larger and contain state-of-the-art facilities that will befit the world-class reputation of University of Washington Business School.[7]

Centers and programs

The following centers are parts of UW Business School.

  • Business and Economic Development Center. The Business and Economic Development Center (BEDC)[8] connects students, faculty, and staff from the UW Business School with a diverse business and nonprofit community. The program helps expand students’ knowledge and skills by helping small businesses and under-represented minority students and by undertaking economic development research.
  • Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The University of Washington is fully committed to enhance further the vibrancy of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest as one of the hottest Venture Capital and entrepreneurs community in the West Coast, United States and in fact the world. The very name of Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) reflects such a commitment.
  • Certificate in International Studies in Business (CISB). Created in 1992 with support from the Center for International Business, Education and Research, the Certificate of International Studies in Business (CISB)[9] at the University of Washington empowers managers with business skills and knowledge of international issues and business practices.
  • CFO Forum. The University of Washington Business School CFO Forum promotes communication between CFOs of leading corporations and UW faculty. The seamless interaction between academia and industry in the forum provides a ready means for all constituents to share their knowledge, and learn about the latest finance research.
  • E-Business Program. The goal of the program is to prepare future business leaders to think about the strategic use of information technology in creating value for stakeholders.
  • Global Business Center. The UW Global Business Center works in partnership with the United States Department of Education to contribute to the international competitiveness of American business by developing and supporting international business programs for students, faculty, and the business community.
  • Retail Management Program. Starbucks, Nordstrom, Seattle's Best Coffee and Costco are just some of the world famous retail companies originated from the Seattle region. Rich with such local experience, the University of Washington Retail Management Program (RMP)[10] aims to bring the industry to a higher level by addressesing the challenges of the industry. A Pharmacy Management Program is also available.
  • Sales Program. The Sales Certificate Program [11] is designed to help students build the foundation for one of the cornerstone of the business world. The Sales Certificated Program is especially designed to create a new breed of sales person.

  • Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index by Academic Analytics ranks University of Washington #1 in research productivity in Business Administration and #8 in marketing. [1][2][3].
  • UW Executive MBA The UW Executive MBA is ranked third of its kind by The Economist [4]
  • UW MBA won 2006 International Venture Capital Investment Competition The UW Business School won the prestigious international Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) held at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. This is UW's second victory in 3 years. Other finalists are NYU, Michigan, Harvard, MIT, USC, Duke, Colorado and Cambridge.[12]
  • UW MBA won 2004 Venture Capital Investment Competition[13]
  • UW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is ranked fifth best in the country by Entrepreneur magazine. [5]
  • Accounting Doctoral Students Won National Competition UW Business School accounting team won a national case competition, xTREME Faculty (xFAC), sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).[14]
  • UW Finished in 5th Place in National Collegiate Sales Competition. UW Business School finished 5th place out of the 35 participating universities.[15]
