Scott Stapp

Scott Stapp (born Anthony Scott Flippen, August 8 1973, in Orlando, Florida) is an American singer and songwriter, best known as the lead singer of the post-grunge band Creed.

Biography

Stapp attended Valencia College in Orlando, where he received his associate's degree in the arts.[1] He then attended Lee College (now known as Lee University) in Cleveland, Tennessee and Florida State University, where Creed was formed.

In VH1's Behind the Music special on Creed, Stapp admitted to frequently disobeying his parents, a local Orlando dentist Steve and wife Linda, and doing various illegal drugs such as ecstasy and shrooms during his young adulthood. [citation needed]

During interviews, he does not discuss the meanings of his lyrics, as he often prefers to let his lyrics speak for themselves, but he has opened up to the Christian press that he is a Christian and has been since being in Creed even though he had struggled with several personal problems before.

Stapp cites The Doors, particularly Jim Morrison, as one of his principal musical influences, and performed with the surviving members of the band for a televised concert in 1999, as well as the Stoned Immaculate: The Music of the Doors tribute album.

In 2004, Creed officially announced their break-up and Stapp began working on his debut album The Great Divide, which was released in 2005. The other members of Creed went on to form Alter Bridge with former Mayfield Four vocalist Myles Kennedy.

On February 10, 2006, Stapp married Miss New York USA 2004 winner Jaclyn Nesheiwat in Miami, Florida. This is his second marriage and her first. They welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Milan Hayat Stapp, on January 4, 2007.[2] He was previously married to Hillaree Burns for 16 months before divorcing in 1999. He has a son from the first marriage, Jagger Stapp.

Stapp has since been ordered not to come into contact with his wife or enter their home in western Boca Raton, FL[3] except to use the "recording studio". This restriction was placed as a condition of his release from the Palm Beach County Jail for allegedly assaulting his wife by throwing a bottle of Orangina within inches of her face.[4]

Solo career

Scott Stapp on his debut solo album The Great Divide

His debut solo album The Great Divide was released in the U.S. on November 22, 2005, peaking at #19 on Billboard's Top 200 chart. However, due to certain controversies in his private life and overall mixed reviews of the album, it has sold poorly in context to the amount sold with Creed. Due to Wind-up Records not promoting his album The Great Divide, Scott Stapp is currently off-tour while he promotes his new show "So You Think You Can Dance". It remains unknown if he will switch to a new record company. Scott Stapp's backing band for the record and live shows since has consisted of Aristides Rincon and John Curry on guitars, Mitch Burman on bass and Mark Archer on drums. They are all members of the band 'Goneblind'.

It was reported on August 6, 2007 in Scott Stapp's MySpace page that he was currently in the studio recording new material.[citation needed] It is unknown when this new record will be released.

Controversies

  • California pornography company Red Light District claims to have acquired a 1999 sex tape in which Stapp, soon after he was divorced from Hillaree Burns, and singer Kid Rock engage in oral sex acts with fans.[5] RLD planned to release the tape in 2006, but one of the women involved filed to block it.[6] Rock also filed an injunction and called Stapp an "idiot".[7]
  • Stapp was arrested by Florida police in July 2002 and charged with reckless driving after his SUV ran off the road before swerving back into the proper lane. He was released from custody after posting $500.[8]
  • Hours after his wedding to Jaclyn Nesheiwat in Miami, Florida, Stapp was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport, en route to his Hawaiian honeymoon, was stopped from boarding a plane at LAX after airline personnel deemed the rocker "antagonistic" and "boisterous". A spokesman for the airport police said that Stapp was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in a public place and taken to the Van Nuys station for processing. Stapp demanded a blood-alcohol test at the station, where he registered a 0.18--twice the legal limit. He was then booked and released on $250 bail. After a court hearing, he was not charged. [citation needed]
  • He was obviously intoxicated during Casino Cinema, a celebrity poker show on the cable channel Spike TV. "During the episode, Stapp slurs his words, curses incessantly, claims Dave Grohl has 'a little cock',' demonstrates a bizarre series of kung-fu moves and demands a kiss from co-host Beth Ostrosky (Howard Stern's girlfriend)."[9]
  • Stapp was also involved in a brawl with members of the band 311 on Thanksgiving day 2005 at a Baltimore hotel and showed up drunk for a TV interview. 311's Chad Sexton, SA Martinez and P-Nut claim, on their official website, that Stapp started the fight. However, hotel security director Jonathan Jordan, claims that security cameras captured the incident and that "Stapp was 'attacked' by several members of 311 and that it took two security guards to break up the fight. SA Martinez told MTV: "He was acting out of control, looking for attention and being loud and obnoxious. He walked up to the bar, took a shot of whiskey and then slammed the shot glass down on the bar, and it shattered everywhere. He said some disrespectful things towards my wife and I asked him what he said, and then Chad came over and said, "Don't talk to her that way," and Scott got up and Chad followed him. After a while he went back to the bar and was looking for attention. And then a few minutes later, he came back to the table where my wife was, sat down across from us and wanted attention, he started the fight, then the police arrived, escorted Scott to his room and then told him to get out of the hotel." A spokesperson for Stapp, who had previously attracted controversy surrounding incidents like a drunken 2002 concert stop with Creed in Chicago, did not return MTV News' requests for comment on the altercation, and according to the Baltimore Police Department, no charges have been filed.
  • Stapp was arrested again by Florida police in May 2007 and charged with assault related to domestic violence. No one was injured in the incident.[10]
  • Stapp was arrested for breaking into the home of Jamie Kennedy's after an altercation during one of Kennedy's comedy routines in Los Angeles. It was later found out that Stapp was trying to take back sex items that he claimed Mr. Kennedy had stolen from him.
  • Stapp, and his band Creed played their final concert at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, IL, where Stapp reportedly performed while intoxicated and/or heavily medicated. Many claim that Stapp forgot lyrics to the songs being played, as well as leaving stage on multiple occasions, eventually returning wearing no shirt and stained pants from what many suspect was due to vomiting back stage. The band was later sued due to the poor performance, but the suit was later thrown out due to the fact that it was a rock concert and rock concerts aren't always good. [11]

Scott Stapp has often been criticized for copying vocalists such as Eddie Vedder, Scott Weiland, Jim Morrison, Tupac Shakur, and Layne Staley.

Media

  • Scott is featured in the Virgos Merlot song "Brother Of Mine." The song was on the album "The Path of Least Resistance."
  • Scott is featured in his sister Jasella Stapp's song "Don't Stop Believing"
  • Scott is mentioned in the song "Kountry Gentlemen" by Family Force Five on the "Business Up Front, Party in the Back" album.
  • Scott had his songs "The Great Divide" and "You Will Soar" played in WWEs' "Tribute to the Troops" show in late 2006 also his album was featured on WWE.COM.
  • He is ranked 334 on Hit Parader magazine's list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 400 Vocalists.
