The North Carolina football team is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They have had some success in their history. The school owns a winning percentage of .561, has won 618 games, and has participated in 25 bowl games. The team has won 5 ACC championships, including 4 outright.

The team plays its home games at Kenan Stadium, located on-campus at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

While not having as long of a sustained successful period as the basketball program, the North Carolina football program has had periods of excellence and several great players pass through the program, including Jeff Saturday, Lawrence Taylor, William Fuller, Greg Ellis, Dre Bly, and Julius Peppers.

The program took a step toward possible prominence by hiring former Miami Hurricanes football head coach Butch Davis for the 2007 season, and making the pledge that they would fund the football program to the same extent that their dominant Men's and Women's basketball teams are funded. On February 7, 2007, Butch Davis and staff inked one of the top recruiting classes in North Carolina football history, earning national recognition from the recruiting industry's most influential websites, including Scout.com, Rivals.com and ESPN.com. This class includes some of the nation's most highly sought after recruits including Marvin Austin, Greg Little, Dwight Jones, Mike Paulus and Tydreke Powell.

Rivalries

North Carolina's traditional rivals are NC State, Duke, Virginia (the South's Oldest Rivalry), and Wake Forest. Duke dominated the early meetings, but North Carolina now holds the series edge, as they have won 16 out of their last 17 meetings. North Carolina's biggest football rival though is NC State, which is evident by the North Carolina student rushing the field after wins over NC State in 2004 and 2006. NC State did not go to a bowl during those two years. During the 2006 Triangle Pigskin Preview, former player and coach John Bunting when asked who the Tar Heels biggest rival was answered that it was NC State. North Carolina students have a tradition of trying to paint the Free Expression Tunnel on NC State's campus Carolina blue a day or two before a big football or basketball game. NC State students try to protect the tunnel. Once an informal tradition, NC State now has an event known as the Ram Roast which has free food and live music for the students protecting the tunnel throughout the night. If the North Carolina students are successful in painting the tunnel Carolina blue, an immediate coat of red paint goes up. NC State's trumpet section also has a tradition of going to North Carolina's campus, just 20 miles away, during the middle of the night and play the NC State Fight Song, Red and White Song, as well as others, all around the campus usually in front of the dorms.
