Gate House, nicknamed G House, is one of the four Upper Houses of the Burwash Hall residence at Victoria College in the University of Toronto. Gate House is the last remaining all-male house at Victoria College. The Gate House emblem is the Phoenix, visible in the bottom-right corner of the Victoria College insignia. The current President of Gate House is Duncan Edwards.

History

Gate House, with the rest of Upper Burwash, opened in 1913 and has held students every year since then except 1995, when it was renovated.[1] For 20 years Gate House hosted an annual party called Novemberfest in the Burwash dining hall.[2] The Victoria Dean of Students cancelled Novemberfest in 2003, when police discovered widespread underage drinking and over 800 people in the dining hall, in violation of the fire code. [3] Since 2003 Gate House has been forbidden to use any combination of the words "November" or "fest" in advertising its gatherings. Another historical Gate House festival that no longer occurs is the "stirring the chicken," a dinner and keg party in which house members cooked chicken fajitas for hundreds of guests. This was discontinued in 2003, along with Novemberfest. As it has done since its inception, Gate House continues to hold secretive first-year initiation ceremonies called Traditionals. Traditionals are known to violate Victoria College policy and have elicited conflict with the Dean many times in the past. For example, in 2004 the Dean expelled three Gate House residents for "hog-tying" a first-year student during traditionals.[4] Past residents of Gate House include Lester B. Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada, and Simon Pulsifer, who Time Magazine nicknamed "The Duke of Data" for his contributions to Wikipedia. [5]

Reputation

Gate House is known for being disruptive.[6] According to Victoria's student newspaper, Gate House conducts "unnecessarily self-aggrandizing" displays of masculinity, including "incessant pounding" on the Gate House table in Burwash dining hall. [7]

Facilities

The house has three floors, which house a total of 30 people, of which 28 are students. Gate House also houses a Don and the Victoria Residence Life Co-ordinator. Above the gate there is a tower that rises three stories higher and has a turret-style roof. The tower is locked during the school year and entering it is a Level 4 offense for which the punishment is eviction from residence.

The first floor only has one double room and one bathroom available to students. Roughly half of the floor is taken up by the apartment of the Residence Life Coordinator. Lastly, on the first floor there is a house common room with a kitchen and two couches.[1] This common room is the only at Victoria with two TVs; one is dedicated to video games and the other to movies and television.

The second floor has three double rooms and seven single rooms. It has three single washrooms and one larger communal one. This floor is also home to the residence don, who has a larger room with a private washroom. The floor also has its own kitchen. The third floor is identical to the second except that in place of the don's room there are two single rooms.[2]

In total, Gate House has 9 bathrooms. It has the highest bathroom-to-person ratio of any residence at Victoria.
