Renault S.A. is France's number two auto maker behind PSA Peugeot Citroën. The government of France owns 44% of the company. Renault also has a substantial stake in Japanese automaker Nissan, Samsung Motors and Volvo Trucks. Renault manufactures small to midsize cars and light commercial vehicles but also build trucks and military vehicles (see for example Renault FT-17 tank).

From 1980-87, Renault held majority ownership in the American Motors Corporation (AMC), which it sold to Chrysler Corporation in May, 1987.
