Burnout Revenge is the fourth video game in the Burnout series. It was released for the PS2 and Xbox on September 13, 2005, alongside the PSP game Burnout Legends. Building on the success of Burnout 3: Takedown, Revenge boasts a number of improvements in graphics, game physics, rival AI, as well as the ability to utilize traffic as a weapon (Traffic Checking).

New features

The tracks have been improved and are now built for battling, with many alternate routes, shortcuts and obstacles.

Other new features include 'In-race Crashbreaker' (the ability to blow one's car up after a crash to cause damage), vertical takedowns, multiple route tracks with huge air opportunities, and traffic checking, which allows the player to hit same-way traffic without wrecking. To check traffic, one must hit light weight traffic (cars, small vans etc.) travelling in the same direction. If you ram into a bus or truck, or hit any traffic head-on, you crash. With practice, this can be used to clear junctions, destroy heavy or oncoming traffic, score extra points in crash mode and even takedown rivals. There is also a new game mode based on this feature. Your vehicle's weight is also accounted for during a race. For example, a lighter vehicle has better handling but is easier to take out than heavier vehicles, and vice versa.

Burnout Revenge has a total of 11 ranks, each one increasingly harder than the last. These ranks range from beginner to intermediate to advanced. The ranks are: Rank 1-Harmless, Rank 2-Unsafe, Rank 3-Reckless, Rank 4-Offensive, Rank 5-Fearless, Rank 6-Dangerous, Rank 7-Insane, Rank 8-Maniac, Rank 9-Assassin, Rank 10-Dominator, and Rank 11-Elite.

Other "Notable Features"

An interesting "feature" in Burnout Revenge is the "Boost-Jump" maneuver. This technique is pefrormed by boosting as fast as possible before impacting a small car or minivan. To do this, simply boost into same-way traffic (going into oncoming traffic will result in a crash). This technique can only be done when the car has reached its maximum speed; also, it is not easily controlled, and it will happen randomly as the car moves across the track. If performed correctly, the car will be jackknifed into the air, as if it had just left a ramp. Oddly enough, however, landing after performing this move doesn't result in an "Awesome Air" line to appear, but rather acts as if the car never left the ground. The player's car does not actually have to be touching a same-way car; boosting near it or close to its proximity will produce the same result. Another thing that should be noted is that the car that launches the user's vehicle will not be destroyed on impact, but rather it will act like a moving wall, propelling the user's car over a reasonably large distance (depending on the speed of the car on impact). Whether this is a glitch or a hidden feature is unknown. It is not always possible to perform this move, even if the above instructions are done correctly. Note: this maneuver is best performed in either traffic attack or burning laps, areas of the game that have large amounts of traffic.

Crash mode

The crash mode has been tweaked to incorporate a new launch system with which to propel the car from the starting line while wind physics have been introduced that affect the in air trajectory of your car. The weight of the car also counts here as it plows through traffic and flies through the air (the heavier your car the less affected it is by wind).

Online

The game also features an online mode for PS2 and Xbox Live. Among the new features is a new ranking system, a 'Crash Tour' mode, and a reworked online Road Rage mode where the Blue team must escape being taken out by the Red team for as long as possible. Another interesting feature for Xbox Live is being able to record videos of yourself online and then posting them for others to download it. There even is a board for the top downloads.A few weeks before it was released, a demo of the game was included with Madden NFL 06 for the PS2 and Xbox. Online play for the PS2 and X-Box versions of this game is set to be expired November 1st.

Xbox 360 version

The Xbox 360 version of Burnout Revenge includes several new features and improves the graphics of the game to utilize the power of the next-gen console. The game includes 10 new crash junctions on the Crash Tour. It also includes a vastly improved online mode that introduces online Revenge Rivals. This system allows players to keep track of their number of times they have been taken out or have taken out any given player.

The new version also includes a new Burnout Clips feature, which allows to save 30 second clips of any offline race played and can be shared them with other players over Xbox Live.

Furthermore, the Xbox 360 version removes the launch meter from Crash Mode that was seen in the PS2/Xbox version.

This version was highly acclaimed.

Bonus vehicles

There are two extra vehicles that can be unlocked by the presence of a saved game from another title on the memory card or hard drive when you first create your profile. A Madden NFL '06 save will unlock the Madden Challenge Bus and a Burnout 3: Takedown save will unlock the Dominator Assassin. Both of these cars are available only for Crash events. They are also available for online use if you own an online adapter.

Downloadable content

The Xbox 360 version of Burnout Revenge was the first game to take advantage of kiosk downloads in North America, where you take your Memory Unit to participating stores such as GameStop, Circuit City, and Best Buy, and download new content for your game on an Xbox 360 Memory Unit. You can download a Burnout Revenge Theme, an Xbox 360 car, and a car based on the store where you downloaded the content.

There is also Xbox Live Marketplace content available in the form of new cars for use online and off. The cars include the previously mentioned Xbox 360 car, as well as

These cars are available online immediately after download but need to be unlocked in the main game to be used.
