Article tab blue for nonexistent articles
Sorry, I don't know if this is normal, I've just never noticed this before. When I go to a nonexistent article, like, let's say, Let's see what this looks like, the article tab on the top is blue when it should be red just like the discussion tab. Also notice when you go to the discussion tab, it the article tab is blue from there too. This appears to be true in all namespaces. --Dmcdevit 30 June 2005 05:08 (UTC)

Special:Blockip
Several admins have expressed their dislike for the new pulldown menu that lets you select the amount of time the block should last, because options like '15 minutes', '4 hours' and 'until wednesday' are no longer possible. Radiant_>|< June 28, 2005 13:26 (UTC)

Thanks. I just fixed the image at My Night with Reg, but I must say this is rather a disturbing feature. <KF> June 28, 2005 12:48 (UTC)
No, it's not that it was appearing at 1x1 pixel size. It's gone completely off the wiki. The image description tag remains, but the image itself has vanished. Like someone had deleted it, and then restored the image description page, but the deletion log shows nothing. The question is, how many and which ones has this happened to and where can they be retrieved from? (it ought to be in the database dump of a while ago?) Dunc|☺ 28 June 2005 14:17 (UTC)
I had the same problem with Image:BN 251 IL Eola.jpg, but since I was on the computer that still had the original at the time, I just re-uploaded it. slambo June 28, 2005 15:53 (UTC)
It's not in the upload log either. When did you upload it? Here or on commons? When did you see it last? --Brion June 28, 2005 15:35 (UTC)
It was uploaded to Wikipedia around or just before 10 September 2004. I think I saw it last Thursday which was 23 June 2005. However, [1] indicates that I created it on 21 June 2005, though I may have edited the page then, I certainly uploaded it earlier. Dunc|☺ 28 June 2005 16:39 (UTC)
- Some images were missing their entries in the database, and 1.5 is more strict about that than 1.4 was.
- Such images probably were victim of one of the following old bugs:
- An upload 'warning' displayed (large, name modified, etc) and the uploader didn't actually click through the OK
- Image deletion failing to remove the image.
- I've run a script to crawl through the directories and create new database entries for images it found; they'll be marked as uploaded by 'Conversion script' with a comment of '(recovered file; missing upload log entry)'. --Brion June 29, 2005 02:03 (UTC)

I'd like to say that I'm disappointed that, after yesterday's software upgrade, the option "Random page" seems to have been deleted. I used it a lot, and more than half my many many edits were the result of hitting "Random page" a few times (and then following links of interest) until I saw something that I could clean up or otherwise improve. I already left a note to this effect on Jimbo's user page, but I'm not sure that was the best place for it. DS June 28, 2005 14:20 (UTC)</a>

Unblocking users
Looks like there might be a problem trying to remove blocks. First, I tried unblocking User:195.93.21.67 because its an AOL proxy. The unblock got listed on the block log but the expiry time on Special:Ipblocklist did not change. Next, ABCD test blocked himself for one hour, but neither him or I could remove the block before it expired. Again, they got listed on Special:Log/block [2] but no changes on Special:Ipblocklist. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 28 June 2005 16:48 (UTC)
- I also tried removing the autoblock caused by ABCD's test block, but again it got listed on the block log but no changes on the expiry time on Special:Ipblocklist. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 28 June 2005 16:50 (UTC)
- There's a serious database locking problem with the ipblocks table, we've disabled deletion of blocks until it's resolved. Sorry for the suckage. :( --Brion June 28, 2005 17:50 (UTC)

"Editing an out-of-date revision"
No idea whether this has been discussed somewhere else or not, but let me just mention it here: When you look at the edit history of a page and click on the most recent date (on top of the whole list) you are now told (wrongly) that this is not the latest version of the page.
Also, could it be that some images are just not shown? <KF> June 28, 2005 06:42 (UTC)
- I'm guessing that may be to do with how under 1.5 the current revision is given an id like old revisions of the article. Evil Monkey∴Hello June 28, 2005 07:07 (UTC)

Left-hand sidebar
(Posted a version of this at the "Help desk" following the "software upgrade", but no reply so far, so am trying again here). Using Opera (and the default skin) the left-hand toolbar/panel (containing Navigation - Search - Toolbox - In other languages, i.e. everything below the Wikipedia logo) is now being forced to the very bottom of each page - making en:Wikipedia a bit of a misery to use..:( Would just like to know if anyone else has experienced this (i.e. is it a bug we can expect to see fixed in due course?) or is it something wrong at my end? -- Picapica 29 June 2005 19:22 (UTC)

Edit conflicts not working anymore, and section edit broken
So, I was happily adding my latest comment here, and I got an edit conflict. Before saving, I took a look at the page's history, and found out it had been saved even with the software returning the edit conflict screen. And, of course, by doing so, it removed a comment another admin left on another section different from the one I was editing. --cesarb 28 June 2005 14:14 (UTC)

Edit conflict resolution was badly broken -- it tried to load the original text the wrong way, and thus ended up thinking it had successfully merged edits by totally overwriting it. It should be fixed now, and behaving at least as well as it did on 1.4 --Brion June 29, 2005 01:22 (UTC)
No section edit on comparison page?
Am I the only one seeing this? When I do a comparison between 2 versions to see what changed, the current page displays below the comparison as before but there are no edit links on the sections so I have to use Edit this page or make another step & go to the article w/out the history or comparison and then use the section links. Watchlist Problems
Not working: Bolding in watchlist
Despite my watchlist saying "Pages which have been changed since you last visited them are shown in bold", I have yet to see anything in bold. Not working: "Hide my edits" in watchlist
- Seems to change display to 'display 1 hour'!?! Niteowlneils 28 June 2005 04:04 (UTC)
The "Hide my edits" feature seems to do nothing in my watchlist. Tested in Firefox in Windows and Red Hat Linux. --brian0918™ 28 June 2005 14:45 (UTC)
This functionality is either not working properly or wasn't implemented well (no offense! it's still handy with a bookmark.) The problem is that it only lasts for the length of time spent viewing it, and that it destroys any other watchlist settings you currently have. E.g, if you are viewing a specialized length of time and then click "Hide my edits", it hides your edits, sure, but you are no longer viewing a specialized length of time... Probably it should be a user preference. I never want to see my edits...I solve this at home with a bookmark that has my preferred settings built into the url...but when i'm on the road that won't work. --Alterego June 29, 2005 16:14 (UTC)
Watchlisting of pages do not propagate to talk pages
I have Wikipedia:MediaWiki 1.5 bugs, which didn't have a talk page, on my watchlist. When creating the talk page, the "Watch this page checkbox" wasn't checked; after saving, I had a page which were on my watchlist, but with its talk page not on my watchlist. That shouldn't be possible, as it's confusing. I confirmed the watch/unwatch tabs weren't lying by looking at the recent changes on the watchlist; a recent change to the page was listed but the edit to the talk page wasn't. --cesarb 28 June 2005 17:07 (UTC)

Print tab
- Print tab is evil! It appears to duplicate the job already done by CSS, but the pages produced are not quite the same. Example: the one generated by the print tab has a sans-serif font (generally easier to read on a screen but serif preferred on paper). This whole function appears to be redundant because of our stylesheets, which strip the menus and make everything appropriate for printing by themselves. I guess this was implemented after calls from people who thought normal pages weren't printable to bring back server-side generation of printable versions. Perhaps the print tab should just lead to a big notice directing people to use the print function of their browsers. — Trilobite (Talk) 28 June 2005 04:14 (UTC)

This has been happening while, but apparently more since the switch to 1.5. I attempted to install a patch to fix it, which was flawed and instead caused it to happen for every edit, for a few minutes. I reverted it immediately, and on later discussion with Brion, we decided that my approach was insecure anyway. I installed an error log which showed that the failures were essentially random, not confined to any particular server. Brion has now experimentally switched session storage from memcached to NFS. -- Tim Starling July 1, 2005 12:33 (UTC)

Clicking on the first "section edit link" for the table brings up an edit window for "section two", clicking on the second "section edit link" brings up an edit window for "section three", clicking on the third "section edit link" brings up a blank edit window. Image stretch isn't proportional
reported as: Bugzilla:2616
The image within the infobox on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_W._Garrett is smaller than the infobox's standard 280px wide. The infobox stretches it sideways but doesn't stretch it vertically by the same proportion like it did before the upgrade this week. It appears that the troublemaker is the "none" modifier in the image tag.
The following code in the Wikipedia Sandbox demonstrates the issue:
[[Image:John W. Garrett.jpg|none|280px|John W. Garret]] <!-- distorted --> [[Image:John W. Garrett.jpg|thumb|280px|John W. Garret]] <!-- proportional resize -->

No toolbox on my user page
reported as bugzilla:2612 I just noticed that I have no toolbox on my user page. This seems very strange, because it appears on other people's pages and my talk page. I'm using the latest IE. -- Samuel Wantman 29 June 2005 18:41 (UTC)

Move rollback
reported as bugzilla:2621
- Page move rollback does some odd things. I moved a page, checked my contribs, and there were two rollbacks: one for the target which when clicked didn't seem to do anything, and the other for the newly created redirect, which when clicked reverted to a MediaWiki default that read "Confirmation e-mail sent." Newer edit link on last diff goes to bogus diff
reported as bugzilla:2622
When paging through diffs, the "Newer edit" link on the last diff goes to a bogus empty diff. --cesarb 28 June 2005 14:11 (UTC)
- The same happens to me. When I try to rollback a vandalism, it says "Rollback failed", then when I try the diff of the latest version in the history (the latest version being the vandalism), it claims there is a newer edit, but the newer edit is a bogus ghost edit, claimed to be by the same vandal. I am then unable to rollback anything. --brian0918™ 28 June 2005 14:43 (UTC)
- Is this still a problem? Can you detail what exactly you're clicking, from where, in what sequence? --Brion June 30, 2005 04:37 (UTC)

- When deleting pages, the "Reason for deletion:" box no longer seems to default to the beginning of the latest content. Niteowlneils 2005-06-28 04:39:38 (UTC)

Message alert?
Someone edited my talk page minutes ago but I don't see the new message alert. Is that a v.1.5 bug? -- Toytoy June 28, 2005 04:36 (UTC)
- While you are at it, could you take a look at the two "immortal" articles at the old Category:Stub? --cesarb 28 June 2005 06:04 (UTC)
- I've renamed them to The Three Musketeers (1993)/broken and Water Music (Handel)/broken. --Brion June 28, 2005 06:10 (UTC)
- Seen that one too. Notice all of them have deleted histories. Also notice all those deleted histories are from 2004. --cesarb 28 June 2005 06:00 (UTC)
- PS: When writing the above, I got an edit conflict with a change on another section above it. Edit conflicts are happening more often than usual. --cesarb 28 June 2005 06:00 (UTC)
More bugs

Rollback bug and box bug
At least you have a rollback. I don't - all history/diff I do have apparently lost the rollback button. Ouch. And apparently I *just* stumbled upon another bug. I have did several edits earlier, but this time (editiong the above section) I have lost the toolbar with buttons! I can't even sign...will do it manually. Note: I got it back after preview. - MediaWiki is written specifically for Wikipedia. We call a new version "beta" for third-party reusers when we're ready to put it live on our own site (which is... Wikipedia). --Brion June 29, 2005 00:16 (UTC)

- This is because Enotif counts each page separately (article, talk page). The developers are working on that. Usually, the higher number is the correct one (if you count each page separateley, what they in fact are). --84.191.5.155 28 June 2005 22:06 (UTC)

Article appearing in watchlist more than once?
- I seem to be having a problem where certain articles are displayed more than once in my watchlist. Appears to be possibly related to "hide own edits" since the articles that do it are the ones that were previously edited by someone else and then later by myself causing it to show up twice ?? K1Bond007 June 28, 2005 17:14 (UTC)
- I just noticed this too in my watchlist. Ironically, the article appearing twice is Wikipedia:MediaWiki 1.5 bugs. --brian0918™ 29 June 2005 13:08 (UTC)
- Interesting. Did you have it on your watchlist while it was still called Wikipedia:MW 1.5 bugs? The page move might have something to do with the duplication. --cesarb 29 June 2005 16:16 (UTC)
- I don't recall, but I've just tried doing that in a new article, and it didn't show up twice. I created the article, then watched it, then moved it, then unwatched the original, edited the new one, and only the new one showed up in my watchlist, only once. Maybe some other version of these steps will recreate it. --brian0918™ 29 June 2005 16:38 (UTC)
- I would like to see all recent changes to the watched pages. However, it seems to happen only sporadically.--Patrick June 29, 2005 13:10 (UTC)

Former search URLs no longer working
URLs such as http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?search=example and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?search=peak%2520oil (generated by a web browser shortcut) used to redirect to an article page or a search result listing, but confusingly now just show a copy of the Main Page with the search field filled in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=example seems be the new URL pattern for it: there should be a permanent (301) redirect from the old to the new. (I prefer the new name, but the old one needn't stop working.)
- A compatibility fix for the old URLs had been checked into 1.4 but not 1.5. Copied old fix into new code, works now. --Brion June 30, 2005 08:28 (UTC)

- Yes, I just went back and tried again and got the page save through, but only after about a 20 minute period including restarting my browser once with no good effect. - Marshman
This state where trying an action would just bring you back to preview was common about a day ago, immediately after the conversion, but then it subsided and in the last day or so I've only seen it once or twice. --Joy [shallot] 30 June 2005 07:54 (UTC)
- In the Hebrew Project that were upgraded to 1.5 the problem still repeating. Actually, it became impossible to save a change without click at least 10 times before on the "Save page" button. Amitayk 30 June 2005 17:03 (UTC)
It is still here, I've had to click 5 times to save an article, at which point I would get an edit conflict. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 30 June 2005 19:13 (UTC)

- Weirdly, this problem (yesterday) only appeared for me in Firefox. I switched to IE and could edit merrily without problems.Rd232 1 July 2005 07:33 (UTC)
- The problem, so far as we understand it, is that login session data for particular login sessions would start going bad. Switching to another browser forces a new session cookie, so you get a brand new fresh session. It shouldn't make a difference which browser you choose, though; clearing your browser's cookies ought to have done just as well. --Brion July 1, 2005 08:50 (UTC)
