Settled by John McLoughlin of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1829-1830 at the site of a Native American village, this was the first city incorporated west of the Mississippi River Oregon City is situated at the confluence of the Clackamas and Willamette rivers in the state of Oregon. The Willamette breaks into the 40-foot (12-meter) Willamette Falls at this point, thus making this a vital navigational point of interest along the Willamette Valley. It's the county seat for Clackamas County.

Originally established as a lumber mill, the settlement became important as the terminal point of the Oregon Trail. This city was the capital of the state until 1851, when the capital was moved to Salem.
