List of French monarchs
The actual beginnings of the French monarchy are debatable. For example, Charlemagne is generally considered a French ruler, but is also considered to be German. France as we know it today saw its modern beginnings no earlier than the reign of Charles the Bald, but that date is itself arguable, as Charles' kingdom was only a portion of a greater Francia, which included large parts of what are now Germany and Italy. Most historians would begin the existence of France proper with the Capetian Dynasty, although for numbering purposes, the later Carolingian kings are generally included.
