Pitch (music)

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Ed Poor (talk | contribs) at 12:07, 30 August 2002 (A = 440 Hz). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

In music, pitch refers to the frequency of a note. For example, the A above middle C is 440 Hz.

In the twelve-tone or well-tempered system made famous by Bach, the difference in pitch between successive notes of the scale are all exactly the twelth-root-of-two higher in pitch. An octave refers to a note whose pitch is at precisely twice the frequency.
