Irish Brigade
Appearance
During several historical wars members of the Irish diaspora have fought for their host country:
- Irish Brigade (French) formed from the Irish army after the flight of the Wild Geese in 1691.
- The Irish Battalion, or Los San Patricio, who defected from the U.S. army and fought on the side of Mexico against the US invasion of 1846-48.
- Irish Brigade (US) served on the Union side in the American Civil War in the 1860s
- Tyneside Irish Brigade, WWI brigade serving on the British side at the Somme.
Also, Britain has organised battalions of Irish soldiers from Ireland itself:
- Irish Guards, currently part of the British Armed Forces.
