Mono no aware

Mono no aware (物の哀れ) is a Japanese term used to describe the awareness of the impermanence of things, and a gentle sadness at their passing. It was a coinage made by the Edo period scholar Motoori Norinaga. It was originally a idea from literary criticism, being seen as the crucial emotion that moves readers but Motoori claimed its scope is not limited to literature but affects the Japanese view of the world in general.
It means literally "the pathos of things". The verb form of "aware" means "to commiserate" or "to pity". The concept corresponds roughly to Vergil's lacrimae rerum.
