Wikipedia:Files for discussion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Zscout370 (talk | contribs) at 04:43, 14 July 2005 (June 24). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page is only for listing images which are duplicates or otherwise unneeded. For copyright infringements, use Wikipedia:Copyright problems. For licensing issues that are not copyright infringements, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. For images duplicated at the Commons use the {{NowCommons|Image:newname.ext}} tag instead of listing here, unless there's some reason the version here actually needs to be deleted.

Images that have been listed for more than one week are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised. Such images should be dealt with as soon as possible.

As per the speedy deletion policy, administrators can delete on sight "[a]n image which is a redundant (all pixels the same or scaled-down) copy of something else on Wikipedia and as long as all inward links have been changed to the image being retained." This does not include visually similar pictures, such as PNG versions of JPEG images. Such images should be listed here instead. For the time being, this also does not include photos copied to Wikimedia Commons.

Deletion guidelines for administrators -- deletion log -- List of empty images

Listing instructions

To list an image on this page, simply add it to the bottom. If it has been replaced by another image, also list that image, in the format "[[:Image:Foo.jpg]] - obsoleted by [[:Image:Bar.jpg]]".

Always inform the uploader that their image is at imminent risk of deletion by adding a message to their talk page. You can use {{subst:idw|File name}} (replace "File name" with the name of the image or media).

If you remove an image from an article, you should list the article from which you removed it, so there can be effective community review of whether or not the image should be deleted. This is necessary because image pages do not remember the articles the images used to be used on.

Add the following message to the top of any image page listed on this page: {{ifd}}, which shows up as:

This template should only be used on file pages.

On this page, state the reasons that the image should be deleted. Some people like to use the following abbreviations:

  • AB (absentee uploader) - the uploader has not contributed to Wikipedia in a long time, and is probably unavailable to answer questions.
  • CV (copyright violation) - the image might be used in violation of copyright, or else there is no copyright info provided
  • NE (not English) - the image contains text that is not English.
  • NS (no source) - image does not contain source and copyright info; tagged with {{No source}}.
  • OB (obsolete) - the image has been replaced by a better version.
  • OF (out-of-focus) - the image is blurry.
  • OR (orphan) - the image is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
  • UE (unencyclopedic) - the image doesn't seem likely to be useful in an encyclopedia

Please sign any listing or vote you add, by adding this after your comment: ~~~~

Instructions for administrators

General

Before deleting an image, make sure of the following:

  • That the image has been listed on this page for one week or longer
  • That the uploader has been alerted on their talk page to the imminent deletion of their image
  • That no objections to its deletion have been raised, or that a consensus to delete has been reached
  • That the image is not used in any articles (note that "What links here" is not currently reliable)
  • That the image is not currently being processed as a copyright violation

Remember to check the image talk page for relevant comments, too.

If the image is to be kept, copy the discussion to the image talk page, and remove the {{ifd}} tag from the image.

When you've finished processing an image (either delete or keep), remove the listing from this page.

Avoid processing your own nominations.

Images moved to Commons

When deleting an image because it is now at the Wikimedia Commons, make sure the Commons version is totally kosher. Among other things, check that:

  1. all relevant revisions of the image have been pushed to the Commons, not just the most recent one.
  2. the Commons version really is as good as or better than the local one.
  3. the Commons version is really free, and properly tagged.
  4. the Commons version is properly attributed.

  • Image:Barnstarmy.jpg OR, CV. dbenbenn | talk 03:46, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • It is not an orphan, it is currently used on two talk pages. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:49, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Plus, the image was a screen shot (seen at Image:Barneythedinosaur.jpg). The image was tagged as fair use, so I wish to object to the deletion. I also notified the user who created and uploaded the image up for deletion. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:53, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
      • (Thanks for notifying the creator; I forgot that.) Note that modifying a copyrighted image isn't fair use. I'll list the image at WP:CP when it fails to be deleted here. dbenbenn | talk 21:11, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Object to deletion for reasons stated above. Also, the barnstar used in the image is in public domain. Sango123 13:10, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
    • Support. It's true that the picture is used on talk pages. However, the Barney picture is undoubtedly copyrighted so this is an illegal derivative work. Superm401 | Talk 04:29, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)
      • If that is the case, then the image I mentioned above, Image:Barneythedinosaur.jpg, would have to be deleted too. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 22:41, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
        • Incorrect. The original Barney image was a fair use because it was used to describe the show. The article uses it to help achieve its aim of advancing knowledge about Barney, who is featured in the image. Therefore, the use fits the key fair use criterion of purpose. The image with Barney and the barnstar does nothing to help advance knowledge of Barney and there is no information to supplement it. Remember! As the wise man of the fair use page said, fair use depends on the use, not the work. Superm401 | Talk July 1, 2005 04:52 (UTC)
    • Support. This picture is ALTERED. The purpose of the alteration escapes me. The star on the image is taken elsewhere from this site. Accuracy of an article is an important factor here -- and it is empasised. I have noted a couple of times a number of edits done to articles on my watchlist where a user inserted some of their own "made-up" material into an article. A trait that could be compared to the fictionization of history (like -- there were a lot of Soviet history books back in the '60s that claimed we invaded and annexed Alaska!) Made-up information is discuraged here. Is this picture of Barny holding a Wiki-star any different? DELETE AT ONCE! -- Jason Palpatine 2 July 2005 07:23 (UTC) Talk
    • Delete as violation of fair use. And you didn't invade Alaska?!? *throws book out window* :) GarrettTalk 21:55, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Essentially, we did. We Americans ignored native soverignty and made Alaska a territory because of its natural resources. It's just an interesting perspective on it, that's all. Superm401 | Talk 17:47, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
Check again. I am refering to them saying that we invaded and annexed RUSSIAN territory! Our history with Native Americans is (oh dear) well documented. It's often been said that our war with Mexico was the U.S. only war of aggression in it's history. Not true. Jason Palpatine 12:52, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. It is incorrect to say that we seized Russia from the Russians. It was a legal purchase. However, the Russians were not really occupying it to any significant degree. We are the ones who displaced the natives. In that sense, it was an invasion for natural resources. Superm401 | Talk 23:20, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

  • Image:Autofellatio.jpg. No, this is not a picture of autofellatio. It's an UV OR cat, overwritten by the Wikipedia background. dbenbenn | talk 2 July 2005 15:48 (UTC). Delete: I uploaded it as a random image to combat vandalism on the Featured article blurb for Vanilla Ninja and somehow the image I was replacing was deleted or otherwise disappeared. The cat image is not appropriate for use on Wikipedia so I covered it over with the background image. Monito 4 July 2005 08:38 (UTC)
  • Image:Wikispecies-logo.png. There's no reason to have a local copy of Commons:Image:Wikispecies-logo.png. dbenbenn | talk 2 July 2005 17:13 (UTC)

This image isn't an orphan; it's used in the article Li XiannianJ3ff 9 July 2005 17:25 (UTC)
  • Delete That may be but there is no source/copyright info and the image is fuzzy. RedWolf 03:38, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
  • Not an orphan anymore. However, no source/copyright info. RedWolf 03:47, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
    • Please use {{NowCommons}} when listing such images to verify the nomination. Thanks. RedWolf 03:38, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
I concur, I just spoke to the copyright holder on the phone, he confirms he may be subject to profit loss. Molloy
The image is also orphaned, was removed from the NZNF page. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 5 July 2005 19:38 (UTC)
Hold please. The copyright owner has indicated that he may be willing to license the image - he just doesn't want it in the public domain. -Willmcw July 6, 2005 01:01 (UTC) Never mind. -Willmcw July 6, 2005 06:44 (UTC)
I'll support if you make a version without the whitespace and character names and put it in. Superm401 | Talk July 6, 2005 01:15 (UTC)

July 7 orphans from IFD

Images that were tagged {{ifd}} but apparently never listed here. dbenbenn | talk 7 July 2005 21:39 (UTC)

I feel Liz Ellis should not be deleted. I uploaded on for the Aussie Notice Board (I was putting Images in for aussie articles which need pictures.) Anyway I have gone back and looked at the site which contains the pic, and there was no copyright. Here it is: http://readysetplay.com.au/abmassadors.html
Support. Unfortunately, according to the Berne convention, works are copyrighted automatically upon creation. It is a copyvio. Superm401 | Talk July 8, 2005 18:02 (UTC)

-- The image certainly is not a hoax, there are many unconfirmed claims of airplane flying over London at July 7, some say terrorists were in that plane and were about to crash but explosives in the plane werent wired so they cancelled it. --Internets 8 July 2005 19:04 (UTC)

and a friend of a friend of my brother-in-law knows someone who was on that plane!
Delete, everybody who's ever lived in London knows that you can see planes flying over London all the time. Thuresson 8 July 2005 21:41 (UTC)
And if it was fact, we would have heard something by now. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 8 July 2005 23:26 (UTC)

I'm the original uploader and only user of them, so I haven't left a message on my own talk page! -Splash 9 July 2005 01:08 (UTC)
1)These new files don't exist 2) Please select one licence out of the three 3) (I don't think it Gray code -- Its the graphical representation isn't it?) User:Nichalp/sg July 9, 2005 07:45 (UTC)
1)Sorry, missed a capital. I thought a bluelink meant it had found them. Corrected. 2)My understanding is that I can multi-license as many ways as I like. 3)The (correctly named) replacement images are Gray coded. -Splash 9 July 2005 12:28 (UTC)
I agree. The only reason I uploaded this file was due to the original file being defaced. Snickerdo 9 July 2005 07:15 (UTC)
The image you were refering to was reverted to the original version (man, what is every vandal's obsession with hello.jpg?) Zscout370 (Sound Off) 9 July 2005 07:17 (UTC)

Image:India topo small.jpg. I made this NPOV image from another, but the original uploader corrected the error. (See: Image:India topo big.jpg for the new image) User:Nichalp/sg July 9, 2005 07:36 (UTC)

Thanks, I was just about to do the same. I had already opened the page. :) User:Nichalp/sg July 9, 2005 07:45 (UTC)

Hey, moving the image is fine, but can we move it to Eagle Scout BSA patch or something that doesn't use youth, because it is a Boy Scouts of America image. -Hoekenheef 02:25, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's worn by the Youth on the Youth uniform, the adult wears the sqaure knot. On the actual Eagle Scout article, it is listed as such. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 02:32, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
