Re the Bronson house: "The property is owned by the NYS Department of Corrections and is located on the grounds of the Hudson Correctional Facility in the City of Hudson, Columbia County." though the same press release says it's been leased to Historic Hudson, Inc for 30 years

Most of the archeological digs have "address restricted" on their NHL applications and in some way, I'd like to honor that.

I had some errands to do upstate so tried to take advantage of it and take some pictures of the sites that still needed it. I've also finished out most of the NYC sites. As for the Boston Post Road, the buildings are not really near each other and it's somewhat hard to identify them definitively. This building (which is now a restaurant on a golf course) was relatively easy to identify and get to, so until someone takes a better picture...

finally, you are probably right about Opus 40. I've tried to stay away from the whole fair use issue, but in this case, seems appropriate. dm (talk) 15:51, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you block User:Bravogolfhotel? First of all, that's probably not the name of any sort of company, it's phonetic alphabet for "B G H". Second, it doesn't fit "promotional usernames" as defined in the username policy, because they were not promoting anything. I think you've made an erroneous block. rspeer / ɹəədsɹ 17:01, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected Sock Puppet

Today the IP Address 75.31.247.103 made a minor post to World War II Casualties. You blocked the same user (with a different IP address)on 5 Dec as a suspected Sock Puppet. This user also made changes today to pages on Basketball. The post to WW2 Casualties was minor, I hope the user did not screw up our Basketball pages.--Woogie10w (talk) 03:23, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quick! EMERGENCY! We need to 5 fold expand the article so it qualifies. I will help. I need your help, too! Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:15, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The rule is that the article must be 1500 bytes AND less than 5 days old. Articles more than 5 days old qualify ONLY if they have been expanded 5 times the length in the past 5 days. As I said, I am willing to help. Time is short! Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:25, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article can be cleaned up. However, now is not the time. Clean up is slow and also reduces the article size potentially. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:31, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DONE! It is 5x larger. It will need cleanup after DYK accepted. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 21:02, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Madswirl johnny

Hi there: I saw this name come up as my watchlist covers "User names for deletion" or whatever the section is called. I was curious as to the reason. Nothing Googles under that name that I can find; it isn't rude or offensive in any way I can identify; and, it is not over long or incomprehensible. Has your bot a mandate to delete anything with the word "mad" in it? Bielle (talk) 18:56, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I googled all three words, but inside quotation marks; if I had just done "Mad Swirl" I would have found out for myself. I appreciate your timely response. Bielle (talk) 19:12, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The block of "Bravo Golf Hotel"

Hi, I see that rspeer has already contacted you about this block, but after hearing about this case I too must protest this block. The hotel you found upon googling does not seem to be widely known, on the other side the NATO phonetic alphabet is well known by many people in the entire world and anyone who has had any contact with radio communications would recognise this username as "BGH". Remember that the username policy states that having a company name as username is only problematic if the company is very well known, or if the user actually promotes the company. I therefore think that we should have assumed good faith and allowed this username.

Also, even if you disagree and believe that the username violates policy, I think notifying the user of this matter would have been a better course of action than blocking on sight. This user was making productive contributions and it would have been more welcoming to notify him of the username problem and direct him to WP:CHU. Experience shows that most newbies that are blocked for username violations stop editing even if they are later unblocked.

In addition, your block message did not specify what exactly was wrong with the username. In cases like this where most people wouldn't know what the violation is, using the optional parameter to {{UsernameBlocked}} indicating the reason for blocking is very helpful. If, for example, you had written {{UsernameBlocked|your username matches the name of a hotel in Dumaguete City, Philippines}}, this text would be incorporated into the block message instead of the standard template wich says "the username may be rude or inflammatory, be unnecessarily long or confusing, be too similar to an existing user, contain the name of an organization or website, refer to a Wikipedia or Wikimedia Foundation process or namespace, or be otherwise inappropriate", providing a more understandable explanation to the user. Is he back? (talk) 15:56, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reviewing the block. I certainly agree that many usernames are unacceptable, but having been a radiotelegraphist in the Navy, I immediately recognised the use of the phonetic alphabet in this username. Personally, I think that the current culture at UAA is a bit too block-heavy, and that discussion should be attempted in more cases instead of outright blocking, so I'm glad you are willing to try that out. Is he back? (talk) 00:32, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments

Yes, you can be blocked for only three reverts. To describe your first edit as simply removing a template is, at this point, a bit disingenuous. The other user gave clear reasons for his reverts in his edit summaries which you could have heeded and attempted to discuss on the talk page, whatever others think of him. Instead you continued to revert. You may not necessarily have been blocked for a 3RR violation, but you certainly did disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point. — Daniel Case (talk) 07:31, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What appears to be actually disingenuous is to pretend to be familiar with the nature of a dispute without researching it at all. The tag was never there. It was added recently by the same user who I and other people had problems with for the pushing the same POV after it was discussed a million times. Here he is adding it http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Egyptians&diff=176083129&oldid=176082965. What is also disingenuous is to say that I didn't add edit summaries when this is obviously not the case [1], [2]. Your assuming that I "disrupted" Wikipedia to make a "point" clearly shows that you let your personal biases to get in the way of your objectivity as an administrator by agreeing with the other user. The way I see it that makes you a bad administrator. Hamada2 (talk) 01:16, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Miranda Priestly.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Miranda Priestly.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Apologies regarding Gomez Mill article comment

I sincerely apologize if you took my criticism as an attack, and I completely understand how when there are only a few ways to say something it's easy to accidentally use identical wording. It was never my intention to call this deliberate; in fact I was simply trying to save us all trouble in case the Gomez foundation came on here and leveled such an accusation. Your remarks on the history page about obfuscating the paragraph so I don't think it's plagiarism appear pretty personally hostile to me, and I don't appreciate that - I was only trying to help. I personally don't care how you word it, and though you appear to think otherwise ("now this is the sort of constructive editing contribution I'd appreciate" regarding the comment following mine), I was indeed trying to make a constructive suggestion. My apologies for not duplicating the copied text on your personal talk page, but you seem to have known exactly to what I was referring. Again, also, I had no idea who had written the original article as this was not part of my concern. Please don't think that I would casually accuse anyone of plagiarism - I merely said that it could be construed as such, and that I construed it as such. I am by no means an authority, and I still stand by my statement. On the article's discussion page, I have clarified exactly what sentences caught my attention, though you've already somewhat corrected the matter. Thank you for your support. :) The nom was quite a ride! And a very close call, but I'm very happy that the third time turned out to be the charm.  :) Now, especially since it was such a controversial nom, I'm going to take things very slowly. Plus of course it's the holiday season, so there are plenty of off-wiki distractions! I'm working my way through the exercises at the "admin school", and will phase very gradually into my use of tools. You are also absolutely correct, that I have strong incentive to not be a controversial admin. I think that everyone will find my adminship actually quite boring, after such an exciting nom.  ;) Anyway, thanks again, and have good holidays, Elonka 10:30, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Query on block

Hello. I am a new admin and am curious as to your block of 116.14.112.226 (talk · contribs). When it was reported to AIV, I declined [4] to block because the IP's stopped editing at 11:47, one minute before they receive a "last warning" at 11:48. This of course excludes the blanking of their own talk page, but I did not count that as WP:USER states that editors may remove warnings at will. Thanks for your time, Kralizec! (talk) 17:07, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You removed the text of the fight song and alma mater from University at Albany, The State University of New York as a copyvio. Given that they are more than 75 years old, I believe that the copyright have expired, putting them into the public domain. I reverted those edits. If you disagree with this, please let me know and we can figure it out together. Thanks --Igoldste (talk) 12:46, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. For the Alma Mater, the June 17, 1916 entry at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/chronology.htm from the UA archives, confirms its date. At the moment, I can't seem to find any date reference to the fight song. For what it is worth, I am under the impression that it is of a similar vintage. I'll revert the revert on it if I can't find something in the next few days.
I am only a casual user and may not fully understand the guidelines. I read the two you pointed out and do not see them as being on point. Doesn't WP:NOT#INFO item 3 really talk about when an article consist solely of a song's lyrics? (and if so, then in cases such as Brown University Alma Mater, may need be merged into Brown University, which is what appears to have already occurred here.) WP:NPS seems to say that items should go into wikisource (which does not seem to have any other entries for college alma maters) if the source material is large, which is not the case here. What do you think?
UA was founded as a school for teachers in 1844, so the question may be, why did it take 60 years for them to come up with an alma mater :)
Thanks for the help and guidance. --Igoldste (talk) 02:32, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adirondack "state" Park?

Daniel--while the official name is "Adirondack Park" New Yorkers call it Adirondack State Park. The reason I ask is that I've seen other state parks referenced in the news recently as being the biggest...I checked it out on wiki and noticed that 76.167.196.174 made several edits this fall that seemed to exploit the official name of Adirondack Park. I corrected 76.167.196.174 's changes reflecting my understanding that Adirondack Park is a NY State park. What say you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.108.77.121 (talk) 08:09, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel --thanks for the prompt reply. You said--"Well, I'm a New Yorker, and I've always called it Adirondack Park. That's what the entry sign says along the Northway. That's what the state says in all its promotional material. That's what Adirondack Life magazine uses. That's what I get 146,000 ghits on, as opposed to 28,000 on for "Adirondack State Park". To call it the latter isn't just a misnomer but a misunderstanding. You were right to revert those edits. New York has plenty of other state parks; the difference with the two forest preserves is that they're much more like a national forest in that they contain much private land and permanent habitation within their boundaries. Wood-Tikchik State Park should rightly be referred to as the largest state park in the U.S., while the Adirondack Park is the largest state-level protected area. Daniel Case (talk) 10:43, 22 December 2007 (UTC)"

Despite it's official name, I would still agrue that it's a "State" park by definition: a park created and run by a State. It fits the wiki state park definition and is even mentioned as an example. As for private lands, I'm unsure about Wood-Tikchik, but regarding Anza-Borrego State Park (cited by some as the largest state park in the lower 48): "The primary mission of the Anza-Borrego Foundation (ABF) has been to acquire the private lands within and bordering Anza-Borrego Desert State Park®. When it was formed in the early 1930s, the park was checker boarded by thousands of acres of inholdings—one estimate as high as 60,000 acres—nearly 10% of the current park!" Is there a particular significance to "state-level protected area", because it certainly doesn't roll off the tongue or carry much resonance with a layman.

Daniel, again appreciate the prompt reply. Britannica online sees it as a State Park - "The area was sparsely settled when in 1892 the state legislature created Adirondack Park, which has grown over the years to become, at more than 5 million acres (2 million hectares), the largest U.S. state or national park outside of Alaska." Avoiding the obvious is leading to erroneous assertions about the relative size of other parks. I've returned to earlier verbiage in the intro sentence which labeled it a state park.

Daniel, I've (previously 68.108.77.121) started a thread on the article's talk page.Mirboj (talk) 20:14, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions to New York State Route 22's route description, has helped get the article to GA status. I thank you and WP:NYSR thanks you.Mitch32contribs 14:43, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've also been looking through the history of the page, and I second the above. Very good work indeed. Well done. Rt. 22:35, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now that I think about it...

Wanna start working on major amounts of route descriptions for articles? We have about 342 stubs still that are in desperate need of help. While the major roads are using the AID thing, we can do the less major roads to help for GA status. (52, 55 being examples). Its up to you.Mitch32contribs 15:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah ok, Just a suggestion, Route descriptions, specifically in NY, should be sourced with Google Maps in the route description. 52 would make a great GA, but the RD is completely unsourced. It can be done in two ways:
  1. Shorter roads - make a driving directions map of it.
  2. Longer roads - use the function in 20, 22 and 26.

This is just tips to help you out. Mitch32contribs 16:59, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

These can usually keep sourcing in order. It also helps if they're in Template:Cite map format. Also, if you'd like, come to the #wikipedia-en-roads IRC channel. Its where everyone meets. Mitch32contribs 17:34, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Range-blocking IP addresses

Hi! I noticed the other day when not logged in that any IP address assigned to me was apparently an alleged sock puppet of one delightful Grant Chuggle. Fully understand the reasoning behind the block but I was wondering if you could just let me know about a couple of things.

(1) Is it possible to create a separate account from behind a blocked IP address and if it is, then why wouldn't the person that you were targeting do that?
(2) I know that the block is short, so I'm assuming that you did discuss the potential impact. Of course the impact is less if a person can create an account from blocked IP address - but that just brings us back to Q1 - but Telkom SA is the largest provider of ADSL services in South Africa, what with Telkom still effectively being a monopoly re: fixed lines. It operates a dynamic DNS system (I'm not techie enough to explain exactly how/why but I'm sure you already figured that out). I'm just wondering what the plan is with regard to your actions after the block ends if any untoward behaviour returns - I can't see that it's within the spirit of Wikipedia's collaborative society to cut out many of the internet users of a decent sized country...

I've had a long dredge through things to see if I can see where any of this was discussed but I can't find it, so if you just wanted to post a link to save time please do if you'd like to reply like that. And a Happy New Year to you when you get back! Kit Berg (talk) 23:22, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just an update: finally found the answer to Q1, should have read the blocking advice when not logged in more carefully! So it seems that it's not as bad as it could be but will probably deter many (most?[citation needed]) potential contributors. I don't think I'd have bothered with that whole jump-through-hoops if I'd have been met with that page when I first arrived at Wikipedia - of course that may be a good or bad thing, depending on one's view. Vandal IP - please BLOCK

This IP is vandalising the List of massacres. Please block. Though there is an Arbcom ruling stating that reverting IPs does not constitute 3RR with several Admins on the same tag-team (some with a history of power-abuse) I can't trust them to stick by the Law. Ta; and URGENT. Note: this IP is very likely a sock of one of the warring Admins on this article. (Sarah777 (talk) 02:45, 28 December 2007 (UTC))[reply]
Sarah, I saw where you made the same request of Allison and have taken into consideration her response, particularly re the ArbCom ruling in question. I'm not going to block; I think the proper response is to protect both the page and talk page since not only the edit warring but the incivility seems to be getting out of control (and you're not blameless there: Calling someone innumerate and illiterate and then saying they can't tell time is neither being civil nor avoiding personal attacks). I think we need to start a discussion over at the reliable sources noticeboard about this issue in the meantime. Daniel Case (talk) 04:21, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, got that and have backed off the article. As for the personal attacks; I assumed the IP was a troll - he was talking complete nonsense. I think maybe the civility standards should be relaxed a bit when dealing with....folk who annoy me. I think we should stick to avoiding, racism, ethnic hatred etc and libel and bad language. Otherwise if it's legal; it should be OK, I've seen so much gaming re incivility and allegations of same that I think we must give more weight to freedom of speech. Where could I propose that? RE: Your IRC Perspective

You know, it was only after re-reading your statement regarding IRC that I realised that you DO have a point there! Conversations on IRC are "real-time", and are seldom saved anywhere, as opposed to discussions on article and project talk pages, which are forever being archived and saved after a fashion. I don't think we need to worry about ArbCom picking up this RFAR, the four votes are there.

For my part, I view the IRC end as mostly an "off-duty lounge" type atmosphere, where editors and admins alike can "dress down", and exchange ideas in a casual environment. Consensus debates DO belong "in-Wiki", and the channel's topic displays that. As for the "user bashing", if I were being disruptive and continuously going against consensus, I would expect to receive my fair share of bashing as well...

I DO understand where you are coming from, even though I may not agree with some of your assertions. You stated that your belief was; "I believe our interactions and collaborations take place best in spaces where we are completely within Foundation ownership and Wikipedia policy." In contrast, I have gotten to know some of my fellow WP:USRD editors far better through IRC than would have ever been possible "in-Wiki". Collaborations, yes. I can see that side of the coin, and even agree somewhat. The thought processes, however, can sometimes be better revealed in a real-time environment. Grahamsville Historic District

Hi Daniel. Nice photo and short article on Grahamsville Historic District. However, I browsed the NRHP text document for the site, and it describes facts somewhat differently as 5 buildings on 20 acres, instead of 6 buildings on 200 acres. Would you take a look at that source? In the article, I provided a link to the NYS OPRHP search form that would bring up the NRHP text document, as well as photos and "other" (correspondence). By the way, how I am finding it to be most convenient to get documents from that system, is to print the documents to PDF files on my own computer, then read them. I use PDF995, a free pdf-writer available from, i think, software995.com. Happy new year and all that! :) doncram (talk) 02:48, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually the 20 acres are split across both sides of the road, the 3 houses on one side and the 3 public elements (church, cemetery, old store) on other side. Yes, I also recalled that the OPRHP site was hard to use in the past, but recently i tried it again and find it works fine. You have to enter Basic criteria such as name "Grahamsville" and county "Sullivan" in the search form, and then click over on the right at RESULTS to get the search to run. Not entirely intuitive. And i think it is then, yes, that a javascript icon shows up for a while, and then you get the 3 documents available (text, photos, other). Then clicking on one of them, you get a wide but short scrollable window showing about an inch the scanned document. I then choose to click on the printer icon and print to a PDF file, in order to read it. This has worked reliably for me for a number of documents. I happen to have been working on several NRHPs in List of Registered Historic Places in Onondaga County, New York recently. Now i remember, i had actually sent a request to the National Register to get one or two of them, but they sent me to the NYS OPRHP site. Let me know if I could possibly answer any questions about the OPRHP interface. Maybe you do need to let it update your Javascript. It is worthwhile, in terms of getting the NRHP docs conveniently and reliably. Cheers, doncram (talk) 03:56, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

East End Historic District, and NYS OPRHP text linking

Hi Daniel -- Simply awesome job you've done, with East End Historic District (Newburgh, New York). Really stunning work! I'd like to think I helped, by nudging you back to trying the NYS OPRHP source again, thereby getting to the NRHP text document for this site, which might have allowed you to be more definitive in a lot that you say there. But you are the man, for having written and integrated all that, besides taking the beautiful pics and laying it all out so nicely!

But please tell, how do you discern the URL that will work to cite directly the document at NYS OPRHP?

cheers, doncram (talk) 07:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Okay, so I went back and used it to hard-code the URL for the NRHP text in the Grahamsville Historic District. And added URL for its Accompanying 6 photos from 1979, too. To try to set a high standard. :) Check it out. I would add the URL for the Accompanying photos to the East End Historic District NRHP, too, but it's too hard for me to describe the photos for it, there are too many pics in its two part photo set for me to count and state what years the pics are from, like I usually do. It would add to the definitiveness of the East End article if you did it, though. :) doncram (talk) 08:35, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, yes, and I guess I oughta go back through all the NYS NHLs outside your area, and check which ones were lacking NRHP text and/or NRHP photos. It was a fairly large percentage that is lacking one or both, as the NPS system is rather imperfect in its coverage. Further, for at least some sites, tne OPRHP system has both a NRHP Registration or Inventory/Nomination text document AND a NHL Nomination text document. The Nationl Park Service NPS focus system just makes one available, probably usually the NHL nom, while I observe in one case now that the older NRHP text for a NYS site is a lot longer, probably has lots more info. Both should be linked to an NHL article, I suppose. Argh. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Doncram (talkcontribs) 21:57, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Reader re: Borowski

Thanks for the back up; I wasn't going to continue it further, but it's good to have a reminder every now and then that things can get out of hand when you're so keen on being right. :) It's a common misconception, though, so I think with the proper info they'll see the light. Thanks again! María (habla conmigo) 21:37, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I haven't "seen the light", and don't accept that believing that non-jews are not Holocaust victims is a "common misconception". There were many other groups that were victimized by the Nazis; the Holocaust was the organized, mass killing of Jews by the Nazis and it follows for me that non-Jews were not Holocaust victims. This viewpoint is held by many scolars and is also reflected in many popular resources about the Holocaust (e.g., the US Holocaust Memorial Museum).

I made one revert and get called out. I'm fairly new to this, but Jeeze. 165.189.169.190 (talk) 16:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am well aware that groups other than jewish people were victims of the Nazis. That's the distinction I'm raising about Borowski.

How about something like this "..reading books by Holocaust survivors, such as Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi, and other survivors of Nazi persecution such as Tadeusz Borowski, who was also a noted writer of Holocaust literature..."

Does "The Reader" specifically identify Borowski as a "Holocaust survivor"? Can you point me to where?

Vote for a post-meetup restaurant

I'm charged with making the reservations for us, so let's make it official. We'll do this via voting and everyone including anonymous voters, sockpuppets, and canvassed supporters is enfranchised. Voting irregularities and election fraud are encouraged as that would be really amusing in this instance. Please vote for whichever restaurant you would like to eat at given the information provided above and your own personal prejudices at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC#Let's make it official. The prevailing restaurant will be called first for the reservation. If a reservation cannot be obtained at the winning restaurant, the runner-up restaurant will be called thus making this entire process pointless. Voting ends 24 hours after this timestamp (because I said so). ScienceApologist (talk) 17:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this edit at AIV, there is a SSP report filed here. As for the edit the IP was mentioning, another editor and myself refactored the heading to level three in an attempt to clean up the talk page -- it was becoming vastly overcluttered with "new" discussions from various IP addresses.

This is also not the first false AIV report filed by the IP addresses, either. Hope this helps, Seicer (talk) (contribs) 04:41, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dutchess County Court House, photos

Awesome pic, and text, for Dutchess County Court House. Nice work again....

I think your new writing, using the NRHP text source, comes across as more definitive. I "believed" your other articles, but having a source at the end of the paragraph does come across better, IMO. I wonder though, when you are adding the text reference, why not also add the photos reference? Like i added for the Grahamsville one. It would be relatively easy for you at that moment to add it. I wonder if you think it does not add so much for the reader? p.s. I didn't separately check if there are photos available for this site, but i note you haven't added photo ref for other recent articles at least. doncram (talk) 08:26, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Daniel, I have a question regarding deletion of the history of one's user page. I have some things that remain in my user page's history that I would like removed (personal information, etc), but I don't want the entire page deleted. Could we eliminate half the problem by blocking edits from new editors or anonymous IP addresses to the List of Days of our Lives cast members? He's back and just going nuts and it seems to be a frequent target of anonymous IP addresses. I think restricting it to established users would cut 90% of my wikiheadaches. Thanks so much. IrishLass (talk) 14:05, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I semi-protected it for a month.

Grant's really causing more problems than I thought. The continued sockpuppetry is leading me to strongly consider asking to have him considered banned by the community, not just indefblocked.Daniel Case (talk) 14:34, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure you guys by now just think I'm on a personal crusade, but I think the semi-protection might be the best of a bunch of not-quite-ideal solutions, inconvenient as it is. I'd strongly advise against banning the entire Telkom SA range from Wikipedia, as I'm sure you'd guess. Have been racking my brains the last few days trying to figure out why but of course that's the great unanswerable, just headache material. I have to honestly say I'm supremely tired of the fact that the pointless obsession of one person to be right/wrong/'famous' causes this much hassle for this many people and I'm sure the DOOL people agree. Kit Berg (talk) 18:16, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pain in the tush is back again. He thinks it's about him being right. I say it's about him not being here at all and have reverted his edits again. In the states you can get people's service carriers to block them for vandalism, not sure how it works over there. Personally I favor the idea of everyone having to have a user name. It's the anonymous users that are generally the ones causing problems. By that I mean the ones intent on causing problems generally don't log on. Kit I don't know the solution, I just know Grant is a pain. BTW ~ thanks for protecting the cast list. It's amazing how quiet it's been there since you took care of that for me/we DOOL contributors. IrishLass (talk) 18:21, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Actually, you can't always get carriers even here in the US to cut people off unless they flagrantly violate their TOS, such as by posting libelous material. There's one long-term vandal who's led to some Southwestern Bell customers in the Houston area having to have accounts to edit since they've been unresponsive to our efforts to get them to cut him off.

Where is he at it now? I'll see if I can just protect the page. If not, another soft rangeblock is in order (so Mr. Berg will be able to edit, and Grant knows that unlike the IPs we can and will permanently block any accounts he creates). Daniel Case (talk) 18:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He's in the Brady Black and Chloe Lane pages. I'm just tired of dealing with him day in and day out. I really want to go to the message board he hangs out at and give him what for. How can one person cause so much grief? Thanks again for all the help. I really wish he'd take the hint and just go away. IrishLass (talk) 19:00, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sock puppet

Not sure how/where I should add this, only that the pattern of editing behaviour by Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/CompScientist has been mimicked by a variety of unregistered users at the Supercar page. I suspect the following may be all the same user as CompScientist. No positive contribution to the page, simply unwarranted reverts of unsourced material with the same assumed bad faith on part of other editors and no other significant contributions from the specified IP address.

Help please

I have a simple question. How the heck can someone see if I have a page on my watchlist? I automatically watch any page I edit but now I'm being accused of using the watchlist to spy on a page so I can destroy it. Can you explain how it is possible for someone to see my talk page? IrishLass (talk) 14:15, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You mean your watchlist, right :-)? First, it shouldn't be anyone's business why you have a page on your watchlist; second, I don't know how it's possible for other people to know what's on your watchlist, unless you've mentioned at some point in the past that it is (People do say things like that and forget they did). There used to be a thing saying "X people are watching this page" but they got rid of it ages ago, I guess because they decided it encouraged vandals to seek out unwatched pages. Daniel Case (talk) 14:58, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. No, I didn't tell anyone it was on my watchlist. I thought maybe admins could see or something. It's just odd how it came about. Thanks for the info. IrishLass (talk) 15:04, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance

I know you are busy but I moved part of a conversation from an article talk page to my talk page because a new user is claiming to be an admin. I need your help in figuring this out and what should be done. I find the behaviour to be suspect and the claims of why they are not an admin suspicious. Can you help. Thanks IrishLass (talk) 14:45, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When your looking into this issue, can you please look into the issue regarding the infobox on the Las Vegas (TV series) discussion page. The discussion is going nowhere but downhill. As KellyANa and Irishlass have been very difficult even with me giving several possible solutions. Even though the user CarGm5 is in question, he/she makes sereval good points. It seems to me like MangoJuice has already addressed this issue. Daniel Case (talk) 15:24, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, not sure how the wiki-law works in these things but it seems to me that Philip Shearer (Admin) removed your protection and immediately engaged in edit-warring (including the mass removal of references). Could you please look into it? Regards Sarah777 (talk) 18:43, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Philip actually wanted the article deleted, as did I, but the attempt failed the AfD. My own view is indeed that there are wider issues at stake than whether one particular "massacre" (Fallujah) should or shouldn't be included. It is that we must have a consistent approach to verification across all potential candidates for inclusion. And if we do that then we end up with an extremely vast list or a tiny list. Philip is trying to take each inclusion separately and deal on its "merits"; which means that entries which draw opposition from many editors (such as suggestions of US perpetrated "massacres") must have a higher level of proof (going beyond normal wiki-standards). But massacres conducted by Shite militias need less proof as very few on en:wiki are likely to be too concerned about the feelings of the remote and unknown alleged bombers. And for legal as well as cultural and political reasons the English-speaking media are way more likely to describe a bombing by Islamist fundamentalists as a massacre than they would a bombing by the US air-force. This is so obvious I don't really think it can be credibly disputed. So any variable standard of verification will inevitably lead to an extremely biased list; and the more recent the time period the more biased the list. The root cause of this problem is the attempt to maintain a list with a title "massacre". I have even suggested something like "List of events considered massacres by the Western Media"; that would obviously put the inherent and unavoidable POV up-front and would eliminate any possibility of using the article for propaganda purposes. Which some quarters seem to regard as the problem with my suggestions. Sarah777 (talk) 05:45, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Short answer YES the Fallujah entry should go to an request for comment (on the article).
Long answer. Articles such as these can not stay protected indefinitely (WP:PROTECT), and as I assumed that you would be watching a page that you had protected no explicit notice was necessary. After a more than two weeks discussion on the talk page, I though bar a couple of minor edits that the new version was a reasonable compromise (as Sarah777 had not responded to my long explanation on undue weight and NPOV). Also removing to the talk page for further discussion those entries that had been flagged as contentious seemed to me to be a way of reducing conflict on the article. Clearly as Sarah777 is in no mood to compromise (as she restored the version prior to the discussion on the talk page) to overwrite the compromise version and is not willing to have no version on the article page while we discuss it further, I do not think that protecting the page with the older version of Fallujah on it will lead to a compromise, because Sarah777 seems by her actions over the last 24 hours to have no interest in working towards a compromise which are her repeated reversal to a version she likes and accusing me of bad faith edits: "engaged in edit-warring (including the mass removal of references)". So yes the Fallujah entry should go to an request for comment (on the article). --Philip Baird Shearer (talk) 11:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Philip, every comment you make makes it clearer and clearer that your POV makes you totally unsuitable to have any Administrative part in this article and I call on you to relinquish you Admin role. I have repeatedly answered your endless stream of attacks on every reference as you move the goalposts with every new one that I post. You still don't realise that the problem here is not Fallujah; it is the total lack of a clear, unambiguous standard of verification that is applied totally equally to all alleged massacres. The fact that you suggest that Fallujah alone, rather than the entire "article", needs a RfC indicates that you have no real grasp of the issues at stake. Which are the primacy of WP:NPOV in the article as a whole, not just in some individual sections. Sarah777 (talk) 13:02, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Record banners.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Record banners.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lost Odyssey page appears to have been vandalized.

I noticed the page was blanked, and so I went to the talk page of the person who did this... (Ranger Roi) whom you already blocked, so I came here since I'm not certain of how to properly revert the page back and also make sure this guy (who apparantly vandalized a bunch of other pages) gets credit for his destruction.

Hey dude, I wonder if you lend some of your excellent energy. The NYS NHLs are all teed up now, with NRHP text/photo links, and quite the majority now with new photos or HABS photos. I have uploaded HABS pics for all where HABS available and no new pic available. New people i have encouraged have added new pics, but not writing. It would be really great if u could march through the List of National Historic Landmarks in New York, spiffing up the articles' writing and the corresponding descriptions. This is what i think is necessary to bring the list to FL status (both the articles plus the list itself need to be improved). You are doing/have done such great writing on so many NRHP articles, you make it look easy, but i know it is not (at least for me, i donut haff de wurdz 2 doo it). doncram (talk) 06:22, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Something broken in DYK template?

I can't fathom the details of the template syntax. The line "ArchiveStart a new article..." has begun displaying outside the {{Did you know}} template on pages where it is transcluded, as for example on my talk page: outside the template and above the hooks instead of below the hooks and inside it.

I'm asking you because it wasn't doing that before about an hour ago and the most recent edits to the template were yours. — Athaenara 03:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was just thinking that the block could be an extended block of unregistered users. Not necessarily indefinite but just for a few weeks or so, to stem the tide in popularity of editing at the particular school. As the trend diminishes, the kids probably wont keep checking it and just assume it was indefinite. Reply to Town of Newburgh Material

You cannot begin to imagine how thrilled I was to have gotten your response last week! Your comments were very very nice and very very welcome and I greatly appreciated them. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time since trying to figure out exactly how mechanically to respond to you. I hope what I am doing now proves to be the correct way to do it! I had seen your name many times on the discussion pages and have come to greatly admire your work and your expertise. Unfortunatelly, as I said, every time I tried to join in the discussion it didn't seem to work. Actually, I had tried several times in past months to "log in" as a user of Wikipedia. Apparently, I was doing something wrong because this is the first time that it seems to have actually worked! Well, actually I won't know THIS worked until or unless I get a response from you! As far as your corrections and suggestions go: a. Last week I got a visit from a delightful lady, Mrs. Starin, who with her husband used to own and live in Gomez House. She came in to complain that we are not doing enough to publicize the history of the Town of Newburgh. I printed out the Wikipedia article thinking that would impress her. Instead of impressing her, she went totally ballistic because Gomez Home wasn't even metioned! I figured I better put it on pronto! So what you saw I did very rapidly and of course I agree with your suggested edits. b. I had seen the article on Route 747 a long time ago and it completely knocked my socks off. Then I saw all the changes made little by little as time went by and kept getting more and more impressed. There was a sentence in their that the "only" homes and businesses on the old Drury Lane were on the part which is now a cul de sac. I would have totally and completely ignored that sentence were it not for the fact that one of my best friends lives in one of the houses which is now on the new 747. She complained to me all through the construction, which must have been horribly inconvenient for her and her family. She complained that she had to change her address through the post office and with all her correspondents from Drury Lane to Route 747 even though she didn't move. NOw she is complaining because her front lawn used to be flush with the road and now you have to go down a fairly steep incline to get to her house. Frankly, if I hadn't been listening to her detailing these developments all these months I would have left it alone! By the way, she is the one who pointed out to me that there IS a westbound ramp onto 84. I don't understand for the life of me why the state changed its mind on that but agree with your asssessment that best leave it alone. I frankly did not want to take the responsibility of totally eradicating what you had previously written which is why I worded it the way I did. c. You are completely one hundred percent correct that I had hit a button at the top totally by accident and was hysterically trying to undo it and couldn't figure out how! I hope you got this message and want you to know that I cannot thank you enough for taking the time and trouble --- and simply caring --- enough to respond to me and to offer me help. My time is very limited but I am going to do the best I possiblly can. By the way, your name didn't ring a bell when I first saw it but now that you called it to my attention I remember seeing your by line in the Mid Hudson Times about 10 years ago. At that time, I was Congressman Ben Gilman's press secretary and part of my job was reading all the weeklies from throughout Orange and surrounding counties and reporting to him on what was going on. I am going to try to sign out now. Hope I got it right. Nghtownclerk (talk) 20:44, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More on Town of Newburgh Material

I apologize for not knowing the proper protocol in posting replies on your talk page, but it took me a while to figure out electronically how to do it. I read your article on Powelton Club and it truly knocked my socks off. I learned a great deal from it. You obviously can't use the following because it is in the realm of "Newburgh urban legend" but I thought you would be interested: prior to the late 1920's, Route 9W was what is now Balmville Road, on the east side of the Powelton Club. When they built the new stretch of highway west of the Powelton Club which you referred to, prohibition was at its height. WHen I was a kid, I was told by various old timers that numerous boot leggers and gangsters are buried under the pavement of this new stretch of Route 9W! Fascinating, no? I have been very very busy at work lately, so haven't had any time to get into any serious editing, but plan to do so when I have some free time. In the meantime, keep up the good work! Nghtownclerk (talk) 14:01, 28 January 2008 (UTC) Thre is something else I really wanted you to know: I also got a real kick out of your article on New York State Route 207. Your comments about this route within the City of Newburgh were right on. I vividly remember that when you approached the intersection of Wisner Avenue eastbound there was a prominent shield with a directional arrow indicating that 207 turned onto Wisner. That sign and arrow disappeared at least 25 years ago (probably kids) and NYS DOT apparently doesn't think it is worth the expenditure to replace it! Likewise, if you are going westbound on 17K you encouter a 207 shield with the "JCT" banner but there is no further information after that. The directional arrows indicating exactly where access to 207 is are long gone. Now, many years ago when they widened Route 32 wihtin the City of Newburgh, there was a temporary detour. That Route 32 sign at the intersection of 17K and Wisner Ave. which you mention is a reminant of that temporary detour! It should have been removed years ago but apparently the powers that be either overlooked it or think it is not worth removing.Nghtownclerk (talk) 14:20, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question, if you don't mind. I have seen on your talk page reference to the term "sock puppet". What is a sock puppet, in relation to wikipedia?Nghtownclerk (talk) 14:36, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As this user is obviously not in need of help, removing them would be great! Thanks! --omtay38 16:14, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppetry

Thank you for your explanation of sock puppetry. It never would have occured to me that people actually do that. When I was on my way back to the office after picking up lunch for my staff and me, I heard on the car radio that Margaret Truman, the daughter of the former President, died. I went on to wikipedia to find details of her life and found to my amazement that the fact she died including the details of her final days were already on there. A lot of people are apparently really on their toes!Nghtownclerk (talk) 19:00, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Margaret Truman

Apparently, some people do live for these things. Nghtownclerk (talk) 21:02, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: Black Rock Forest

Updated DYK query On 30 January, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Black Rock Forest, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Hey, congrats on your DYK. This is probably really anal, but the picture of Black Rock Forest seems to be taken from a golf course, not a school. I Google Mapped the area around it, and the Storm King Golf Course seems to be a little bit dowm the road from the Storm King School? Again, silly detail, great article, by the way! Screamers plot length

I would like to request that you provide me with a link to the policy article that specifically states a plot description can be no longer than one thousand words. I haven't come across this before. Gamer Junkie T / C 05:04, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's a guideline, not a policy. It's not even an old guideline, and was probably added by some Deletionist as a legitimate means to their end. Looks like more of the overly binding, bureaucratic instruction creep which appears to infest every corner of Wikipedia's administration these days. Gamer Junkie T / C 05:31, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that I did request a discussion regarding the plot's length upon initially removing the tag. I still believe that's appropriate, as throwing around quasi-official, semi-valid guidelines and exclaiming "end of discussion!" doesn't particularly go down well. Not that I'm saying you've done this. As far as good faith goes... lol. The only reason I still contribute here at all is out of obligation to my fellow WikiProject founders. There's a lot of good editors here. There's also a lot of editors who spend more time removing information than contributing it. I have a problem with this.
