Online file storage is generally when a company, service, or application allows you to "virtually" store any computer file on the internet. This will make the file (including media such as photos, music, video) available through any computer with internet access.

Most online file storage services offer space on a per Gigabyte Basis, albeit some still offer this as a free service. Some services require you to download software which will make your files only available on computers which have that software installed. Some services allow you to retrieve your files through any web browser. With the increased inbox space (up to 2 GB) offered by mail sites like Gmail and Yahoo many have started using this as an online drive.

This facility has enabled another form of off-site backup that would have been unfeasible to individual and SOHO computer users.
