His Grace The Rt. Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma was the 18th to occupy the episcopal (Malankara) throne of St. Thomas the Apostle after the Mar Thoma church re-established the metropolitan episcopacy in the 17th century.

The church saw remarkable growth during his reign as metropolitan.[citation needed] He was consecrated in 1947 with the name Juhanon Mar Timothios. He received his theological training in the United Theological College in Bangalore and in New York.

His tenure was notable for his deep concern for social justice from the Bible.[citation needed] As he was deeply committed to the cause of reformation, he crossed denominational lines. Ecumenism was a reality for him; he restored peace with the Indian Orthodox Church. He actively participated in ecumenical councils such as the World Council of Churches in 1948. It was during his regime that full communion was established with the Churches of South India and North India. During the Emergency he was the only [citation needed] Indian Christian leader to send a letter to the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi arguing for the restoration of democracy. Education was also a major point for H.G. He established four institutions. He had high regard for the poor and built 100 homes in Kerala. It was His Grace that provided the church with a motto called "Lighted to Lighten". He died in 1976.
