New Kadampa is a synonym for the Gelugpas (Dge-lugs-pa) school, as founded by Je Tsongkhapa (Btsong-ka-pa).

In the 1990s Geshe Kelsang Gyatso founded the New Kadampa Tradition (aka NKT) as a split from the Gelug school. The NKT is a modern movement, founded on the basis of a disagreement with mainstream Tibetan Buddhism. It is distinct from both the the Kadampa school of Atisha and the New Kadampa school called Gelugpas.
