"Make It Happen" was the third and final single released from Mariah Carey's 2nd album, Emotions, in 1992.

The song

The single was co-written and co-produced by Mariah and David Cole and Robert Clivillés of the C&C Music Factory. The dance/gospel hybrid track recalls Mariah relaying the inspirational message on how "if you believe in yourself enough and know what you want, you're going to make it happen".

Chart success

Up to this point in her career, Mariah had attained an almost flawless record of #1 singles in the USA on the Hot 100. The first five singles, she had released in her career, "Vision Of Love", "Love Takes Time", "Someday", "I Don't Wanna Cry", and "Emotions" had all reached #1. Only her sixth single, "Can't Let Go", had failed to reach the peak position by peaking at #2. Pressure was put on Mariah by Sony bosses and critics to turn "Make It Happen" into her next #1 single. She disappointed them again, as "Make It Happen" peaked at #5. It should be noted, however, that a #5 peak is usually considered a major success for most artists, but it seemed that Mariah had to be held to a higher standard.

"Make It Happen" debuted at #74 and took 8 weeks to climb to its peak position, one which it only maintained for a week. It, like the other two singles from "Emotions", spent a grand total of only 20 weeks on the Hot 100, being removed from the charts due to their low positions for a certain period of time. 16 of the weeks it spent on the charts were in the Top 40.

"Make It Happen" peaked high enough on the Hot 100 Airplay Chart to gain a higher position than #5 and possibly even stand a good chance of hitting the summit. However, sales were poor as the album itself had already gone 3×Platinum and the singles off Emotions were not as successful as those off her debut. Its peak of #18 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales was a disappointment and with much lower sales than airplay, it was quite impressive that "Make It Happen" was able to crack the Top 5. The single became her first in the US not to top any chart, as "Can't Let Go" had topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles Chart.

Internationally, it was a relative flop like "Can't Let Go". Carey was still a little far away from the stage where every single she released became a hit internationally. It became her first single to miss the Top 10 in Canada, however in the UK and Australia, it faired better than "Can't Let Go".

Music video

The music video of the song is straightforward and features Mariah holding an impromptu benefit concert to raise money in a church slated for closing. Mariah grabs a microphone and proceeds to woo potential benefactors into donating, while the whole church mellows out to a song and dance routine as they groove along to Mariah singing.

The music video was released to consumers on the MTV Unplugged+3 Home Video, but it has never been released in DVD Form.

Remixes

David Cole and Robert Clivillés of the C&C Music Factory, co-producers of this track, also remixed the song, and among the remixes is the "Make It Happen (C&C Classic Mix)"
