Southland Tales is a 2006 ensemble film currently in pre-production. Written and directed by Richard Kelly, the film has been described as a melange of – among other things – musical, comedy, thriller and sci-fi elements, and is set during a three-day heat wave in Los Angeles. It is scheduled to start filming on August 1, 2005, on a budget of around $15 million.

The film has become highly anticipated in many circles, particularly due to the cult success of Kelly's last (2001) release Donnie Darko. Kevin Smith and long-time collaborator Jason Lee, both also having a cult following, are due to star in the film alongside Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Seann William Scott.

Music for the film is rumoured to include involvement by Gary Jules (who previously worked on Donnie Darko), Moby and Trent Reznor.

The official movie web site is located at www.southlandtales.com.

Graphic novels

It has been comfirmed that a series of six graphic novels will be released in addition to the movie. They will tell the first six parts of what will be a nine part story; the movie will tell the final three parts. The titles of the graphic novels are, according to the offical website:

  • Part One: Two Roads Diverge
  • Part Two: Fingerprints
  • Part Three: The Mechanicals
  • Part Four: Temptation Waits
  • Part Five: Memory Gospel
  • Part Six: Wave Of Mutilation

It has been noticed that some of the titles of the novels are also song titles; for instance, "Memory Gospel" is also the name of a Moby song, while "Wave of Mutilation" is a song by The Pixies.

Promotional details

In a similar style to Donnie Darko, the official web site is an interactive Macromedia Flash animation, blending eerie sounds and visuals with puzzles. The taglines for the film include "Warning: you are entering a domain of chaos", "The internet is the future" and "The future is just like you imagined".
