Los Angeles County is at 9,802,800 residents (as of 2001) the most populous county in the US state of California. The county seat is the city of Los Angeles.
The county was established in 1850, with various additions and removals of territory over the years. Orange County, to the southeast, was split off from Los Angeles County in 1889.
The coastal portion of the county is heavily urban, though there is a large expanse of sparsely populated desert farther inland.
