Discipline is the tenth studio album by American pop/R&B singer Janet Jackson, released on February 26 2008 in the United States and her first album ot be released on Island Def Jam Records.

Production

Jackson worked with producers such as Rodney Jerkins (who produced the lead single "Feedback" with D'Mile), Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, Shea Taylor, Stargate, Johnta Austin, Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. The album was executive produced by Island Def Jam Chairman LA Reid and Jackson herself. It's her first album since 1986's Control not to be produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis[citation needed] or to have any songs written or co-written by Jackson herself.[citation needed]

In July 2007, it was announced that Jackson had signed a recording contract with Universal Music Group's Island Records, after her five-album deal with Virgin Records was fulfilled with the release of her last album 20 Y.O..

The song "So Much Betta" contains sampled portions of the track "Daftendirekt" by the French house music duo Daft Punk.[2]

Critical reception

The critical response for the album has been mixed.

Keith Harris of Rolling Stone wrote, "Janet Jackson has abandoned the plastic R&B of 2006's 20 Y.O. for a sexier brand of digitized megapop."[3] All Music Guide gave 4 of 5 stars saying that "will feast upon the singer's lack of judiciousness when it comes to expressing her sexuality" and that [Jackson] "probably won't hit that late-'80s peak again, but that is no excuse to write her off." Billboard and VH1 gave a track by track review, based on the listening party, which were positive. US Weekly gave 3 of 4 stars based on a positive review.

However the Boston Globe stated "Jackson's decision to recycle the nympho routine one more time is just boring."[4] and the Rocky Mountain News felt "Jackson's approach is to try to bolt together some semblance of her '80s and '90s sound with her 'risque' lyrics. It's tired and overdone, and the music on this new disc only confirms that."[5]

Singles

The album's first single "Feedback," produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and D'Mile, was released as a digital download on December 26, 2007 and was released to radio on January 7, 2008. The song has peaked at #51 on Billboard Hot 100 chart, #39 on Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and #38 on Billboard Pop 100.[6][7][8]

The second single "Rock with U" was released on February 26, 2008.

Sales

The new Album peaked in America on the Billboard 200 at #1, but sold just 181,000 copies, it is her first #1 Album since All For You in 2001.[19]
