He started his career as a model in 1995, modelling for the brand name STORM, and began acting in sit-coms and TV dramas in 1996. In 1999 he made his film debut in Calla and has since then gathered prominent fan base throughout Southeast Asia.
Song owes much of his fame to the melodrama "Autumn Tale" (a.k.a. Endless Love) in 2000. Further fame was boosted from the Korean Drama Summer Scent in 2003, a story that was about a fight between a sister and brother fighting for Min-yu (Seung-hun) and Hui-yuan (Ye-jin) respectively, who had conducted a heart operation before due to a previous heart failure. The heart, which belonged to Minyu's previous girlfriend who was killed in a car accident and he, by co-incidence, fell in love with Huiyuan and thus causing their other partners (the siblings) to fight back their relationship with these two people, causing Minyu and Huiyuan to break up. In this drama, Sung co-starred with Son Ye-jin.
Unfortunately, all is not very well for Song. Song, during his late teenage years, had successfully evaded serving the local army through ways and means. Song, now 28, was caught by the South Korean government and was forced to serve the army for around two years. Many fans of his, when seeing this, pleaded to the South Korea government not to take such a drastic action. Song, feeling guilty of himself, apologised to his fellow countryman. Despite pleas from his fans to the government, the government, possibly an action to prevent corruption, as the government assumed that if they let him off this time, other boys from the country will no longer be as willing to serve the army and might rebel, resulting in riots and uprisings. In the end, Sung had no choice but to temporarily leave his acting career and serve the army. Sung is now currently serving the local army, with his girlfriend currently waiting for him. Both of them might have proposed to marry in a few years' time.
