Outpost 2: Divided Destiny

Outpost 2 is a computer game by Sierra Entertainment. It involved a rather intricate plotline, and both real-time fighting ellements, and real-time colony ellements. Due to a rushed prodection, it actualy feels like two games tacked together, a RTS fighter, and a RTS base manager. It includes two distinct, and partialy parrlell novellas which greatly improve gameplay. Each chapter is given as a reward for completing the missions.

Storyline

Outpost 2's story goes something like this. The earth was doomed, a massive metor crashed into it's serface, causing extinction on the level of the whipeout of the dinosaurs. A select few engeneers and scientists (along with their families) escaped in a rushed space-ship. The vessal was anmed the Constinoga The ship traveled for meny centuarys, and started to run out of feul. Desperate, the ship's A.I., a bank of savant computers, reawkened the captin. He gave orders to touch down on the planet that was closest to being habital. The colonists were set down on a mars like plante, which they named "New terra". Somehow the Constinoga crashed, though the circumstances are unknown. This plot can be seen as similer to that of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

After the landing an argument erupted amoungst the colonists. One group wanted to terreform New Terra, The other wanted to adapt humanity to live with New Terra. The ruling councle listened to both groups petitions, and decided to go along with the terreformers. The other group was understandably upset, and left in the night, Steeling away several Convecs with Construction kits and Evacuation transports anound with other vehicals. They used theese to set up their own base. They then reprogramed their Structure factory to produce structures with a vastly different profile then thoose of the former groups. They settled on a volcanic plane. They decide to go by the name of Plymouth. There is much shouting and angry words sent over the Comunications satilite. In the end, they decide that two seperate colonies is actualy a good idea. The first group begins to call themselves Eden.

A time passes, and the two colonies trade and argue, Eventualy one of the leaders gets upset, and decides to give the other side the cold sholder. They shut down the communications satilite, by sending the deactivation code. Unfortunatly it is realised too late, that no one remembered the Re-activation code. At this point there are two elders left, survivers from the first landing. Axel Moon of Eden, and Emma (No last name appears to be given) of Eden. Axel and Emma were childhood freinds, and it is revealed, were once lovers before the seperation. They were mere children when the ship left earth, and are now in their forties. All of the elder's lifespans have been drasticly reduced due a malfunction in the stasis pods, though they appear to age at the normal rate. Axel and Emma both have their own personal Savant computers, Kraft and Frost. These Savants have managed to pick up something of a personality because of how they are treated by their owners, almost like people in their oen right. This becomes more and more apperent the further along in the novella you get. There are meny supporting characters in the novella as well, and much backstabbing.

The Edens cary out an attempt at terraforming Terra using a bioagent that breaks apart carbon bonds. These get loose and start to eat people. It is called 'The blight' and can corrupt Bio-optronics. In the mean time, the water produced by the breaking of these carbon bonds lubricats long dormant fault lines, and the air released begins to thicken and storm. In Plymouth a long dormant volcano erupts driving them to evacuate. To top off the disasters, the planet does not have enough atmosphere to burn off asteroids, and is passing through a large asteroid storm. Needless to say both factions agrea that this in unliveable, and decide to evacuate the planet. Unfortunately, there are only enough resources left on the planet for one and three quarters spaceships.

The planet is mostly homogenised in the metal department, and this makes seams of minable resorces much rarer then on earth. These seams are roughly even mixes of metals though, just thicker than the natural crust. They are defined by common metals light elements like Iron, Aluminium, silicon, and others from the upper half of the table. and Rare metals heavy elements such as, gold, and lead, copper, zinc, mercury, cobalt, etc. There are refrences made that lead to the conclusion that there are meny semi-precious and precious gem stones included in their mining.

The plot is reveiled through a combination of the novella, and a series of mission breifs that sound very real. The breifs in themselves are very entertaining. (The objectives page is an abstraction of the breif, it's shorter, but not as entertaining).

Gameplay

The game play is almost indescribable. It's rather unique. The buildings are built twice, once by a Structure Factory and once by a Convec. Theese structures must be linked by tubes to provide life support, power connections, free data flow, and human transportation. The tubes are bought by an Earthworker. If you buldoze terrain, then the convec will build faster. You use Robodozers to build terrain. you must keep the population growing, and moral high. Certain buildings specificly improve moral, other buildings and scientific projects improve moral as a side effect of being built. High Moral means a high birthrate. Over-crowding reduces moral.

Combat is rather simple, and not well though out. It is, however, easy to use. There are three different chasises, upon which different weapons are secured. Then you use your slightly costomised unites of death to destroy the foe.

Plymouth gameplay vrs. Eden Gameplay

The Plymouth gameplay is harder, and more stratigec then the Eden gameplay. Eden is granted the best weapons, and other such brute force advantages, including the RLV. (Reusibal Launch vehical). Plymouth must rely upon stratigy, as their weapons do not do much damage (Except the Super Nova, but that explodes.)

Techlist

There are two sperate tech trees, one for Eden, and one for Plymouth. Nevertheless, they cross in meny the same locations. Note also that there are different laboritories. Each topic has a forword that sounds much like some scientist pitching his idea for sale, each also has an afterword that sounds like somebody describing what they did in extravigant terms. It is realy quite fun.

Units

The game fetures a wide varity of units, which are operated by a primitive Bio-optronic system which is similer to that of the Savant Computers, however far simipler, and reletivly eaisy to reprogram.


Ground Units

The Robodozer: is a unit that haves even some experenced players screaming "What's the point!" The point is to reduce building time, and resorce collection time. The buldozer works slowly, so it is best to have several working your colony when you are not building new structures, as it will allow faster construction afterwards. The time saving is not as much as the time spent though, so don't micromanage them. They also are good for buldozing paths to your mines and smelters.

The Convec: is the builder and repairer unit. You must dock it at a Structure Factory to get a Structure Kit before you can build anything with it. It works faster on buldozed land.

The Earthworker: Builds and destroys walls and transport tubes. Like the Convec it works faster in buldozed land.

The Cargo truck a simple cargo truck. Can carry almost anything. Loads and unloads almost anywhere. They can be set up to travel perpetualy from mine to Smelter and back. They can also travel from a debreis feild to G.O.R.F. and back.

The Evacuation Transport is a rather simple vehical. It can carry 25 colonists, including women and children, in the bare minimum of comfort. Often required for mission objectives, they are otherwise usless. Try to keep them out of the way.

The Spider A Plymouth only unit. It can repair units and buildings, it can also reprogram E.M.P.ed enemy units. It is immune to EMP.

The Scorpion Another Plymouth only unit, this one has a small laser. Like it's smaller cousin, it's immune to E.M.P.

The Repair vehical An Eden only unit it can repair unites and buildings, and is faster then the spider. It is not immune to E.M.P.

The Scout Another unit that will have ou screaming "What's the point!" It warns of approaching foes, and is often required for mission objectives. It is the chepest and fastest unit.

The Lynx The smallest and fastest combat chassis, it has the least Armor and H.P.

The Panther The medium chasis, there's nothing special here, move along.

The Tiger The largest, slowest and most durable chasis, it sports a faster then averadge fire rate, and a heaver then averadge blow die to it's twin turret system.


Space Units

The SULV Singel-Use Launch Vehical. Used to carry componets of the star-ship.

The RULV Re-Usable Launch Vehical. Used to carry componets of the star-ship. Returns to terra after every launch. Eden only

The EMP missile Plymouth only, Creates a massive EMP shockwave.

The solar satilite Must be launched by a Launch Vehical. Beams solar power to the recever stations.

The EDWARDS Early Disaster Warning And Resource Detection Satalight. Must be launched by a launch vehical. Automaticly survays all ore beacons, gives early warning of disasters.

The Starship Each componet must be launched by a Launch Vehical. When compleated, you win the game.
