Race is a 2008 Bollywood film directed by duo Abbas Mustan. It stars Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy in pivotal roles. Atif Aslam has given three songs to the film with one being sung by Taz (Stereo Nation). Released on March 21, 2008, the film was shot in Dubai and parts of South Africa.

Plot

The film starts with an accident taking place. The victim is not unveiled, instead the events of a month ago are shown. Then, Anil Kapoor's voice introduces the characters of the story. Ranvir Singh (Saif Ali Khan) is a rich, aggressive, and ruthless businessman. Apart from his father's hereditary business, he has a horse-breeding center where horses are trained and breeded which he bets on in horse-races. This horse-race business is his personal favorite and his ranch in Durban, South Africa (where the story is set) is also named 'Stallions'. He is in an affair with Sonia (Bipasha Basu), a newly flourishing model, and their relationship is just on the edge, with proposing being the only thing left. His secretary, Sofia (Katrina Kaif), also loves him, but he regards her love as her efficiency. His younger brother, Rajiv Singh (Akshaye Khanna), is a drunkard and lazy person.

Cast

  • Saif Ali Khan as Ranvir Singh -- The elder of the two brothers, he is a ruthless businessman who will not stop at anything to win the game. Playing with danger is his passion, and outsmarting his opponents is his favorite pastime.
  • Akshaye Khanna as Rajeev Singh -- The younger of the two brothers, Rajeev is spoiled, laid back, and happy to be so. But underneath the surface there lurks an anger which he tries to rein in with liquor. As a result, both anger and liquor get the better of him and end up controlling him.
  • Anil Kapoor as Robert D’Costa (R.D.) -- A private detective with the deceptive air of an idiot. He is constantly eating fruits while solving a case. He is sharp, resourceful and quick. His appearance in the story makes the plot thicken as he unravels one lie after the other.
  • Bipasha Basu as Sonia -- A beautiful and glamorous model with a shady past. She is looking for a man who will keep her in his heart. She is waiting for the rich and famous Ranvir Singh to propose to her.
  • Katrina Kaif as Sophia -- Ranvir’s beautiful and innocent looking secretary who manages all his important affairs. She is indispensable to Ranvir, who trusts her completely, but does not reciprocate her love.
  • Sameera Reddy as Mini -- An attractive and sexy assistant of Robert D Costa, she constantly asks unintelligent questions and is mostly relegated by her boss to cutting fruits or doing menial jobs.

Sexy Lady (Khwab Dekhe)

  • The song "Mujhpe To Jadoo" is going to be replaced in the film by a new song composed by Pritam titled "Sexy Lady". "Sexy Lady" will be picturized on Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif. Tips Industries Limited is planning to re-release the Race CD with the addition of the new track soon.

Trivia

  • The song Pehli Nazar is a copy of a Korean song "Sarang he yo" from a Korean TV Drama called Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang.
  • The song "Zara Zara Touch Me Touch Me" has been generously copied from the Chinese track, 'Deep within the Bamboo grove' (Zhu Lin Shen Chu) by South east Asian singer Lee-Hom Wang (from his 2005 album, Shangri-La). This is yet another instance of how Pritam just cannot resist his habit of plagiarism in which he continues to pilfer from across the world with no credit to any original source whatsoever.
  • First time Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif are paired together.

Reviews and Reception

  • Race is Abbas-Mustan's most accomplished work, after Baazigar. Any thriller works if and only if the story has the edge-of-the-seat moments and which catches you unawares as the reels unfold. Race has that quality.

  • AOL.in[2] (Reviewer: Noyon Jyoti Parasara) gave the film three on five saying,"Overall, this is a complete Abbas-Mastan thriller. The story comes up with a new thrill every half an hour. And when that's in a two and half hour movie, we would say it almost overflows with kahani mein twists." click here to read review ->[3]
  • The Times of India rated it at 3.5 on a scale of 5.
