Here is the list of the characters of the Cloverfield Universe

Main characters in Cloverfield

The monster

This is the monster of the movie, as of now known only as the Cloverfield Monster. The creature attacks Manhattan the same night as Rob's go-away party to Japan. While rescuing Beth, Hud gives various theories on where the creature may have come from, (which included being from outer space, created by the government, or from the ocean). It killed Jason when it smashed the Brooklyn Bridge with its tail and killed Hud, apparently by biting him or possibly by dropping him thereafter, at the end of the film. Furthermore, dog-sized, parasitic arthopods fall off the monster's body after rubbing itself on a building. The monster's fate is unknown after the final bombing assault sent to destroy it. The whisper transmission at the end of the film states that the creature is still alive. Seemingly, according to the tie-in manga, Cloverfield/Kishin, and hinted at slightly by the viral marketing websites, a Japanese oil-drilling company, known as Tagruato (of which Slusho!, where Rob was supposed to work, is a subsidiary company), captured the monster for unknown reasons. In the manga, The creature has some kind of biological connection to Kishin Aiba, the main character, due to a result of tampering and experimentation of their cells. Kishin Aiba is able to control the monster without it harming him, thinking that the child is its kin or brethren.

Rob Hawkins

Rob Hawkins (played by Michael Stahl-David) is one of the main characters. At the beginning of the film, it is shown that a month earlier he slept with his friend, Beth. Then a month later, during the farewell party that his brother Jason and his girlfriend, Lily, made for Rob's trip to Japan for a new job, he encounters her again. However when Beth came, she introduces a new man to the group, Travis, which soon Rob and Beth started arguing about. The reason he ignored her all this time is because of the job that Rob got, this disappoints both of them , and Beth was last seen leaving the party. When the monster attacks, Rob, Jason, Lily, Hud (friend of Jason) and Marlena retreated to the Brooklyn bridge. Along the lines of evacuation, Rob got a call from Beth and she's trapped at her father's apartment. After the death of Jason by the monster, Rob decided that they should return to Manhattan and save Beth. They travel in the subway after being intercepted by the army and the Monster. Here, Rob and Lily mourn the death of Jason, with Rob informing their mother. After, discovering a route on the other subway lines, they trek through the tunnel, and is here where the parasites from the monster attack. Rob manages to fight them off fairly, but in the process, Marlena gets wounded. After Marlena's death in the field hospital from the bite in the tunnels, and assurances from one of the soldiers, the surviving trio then discovered Beth's apartment, which was tilted badly due to the Monster's earlier attack and to climb up there and save Beth. They successfully rescue her and they retreat to the last civilian helicopters, Lily boarded one while the others boarded another. However, their airlift was cut short when the monster attacked it after a B-2 bomber apparently wounded it severely. Rob, Beth, and Hud survive the crash in Central Park, but the monster killed Hud. Rob and Beth grabbed the camera and hid under the bridge. Here, they dedicate their apparent demise to their love for each other, their friends who perished and their family before the bombings destroyed the bridge. The final contents of the tape goes back to a month earlier we see Rob and Beth at Coney Island, musing about their good day together and seemingly ignoring a mysterious object falling from the distance. His ultimate fate is unknown, but he is believed to be the speaker in a transmission received in the movie after the credits, implying he and Beth might still be alive (as is the creature), albeit trapped in the rubble.

Elizabeth McIntyre

Elizabeth McIntyre, nicknamed Beth, (played by Odette Yustman) is the long-time friend of Rob Hawkins. She appears in a month old recording in bed naked at her father's apartment while Rob records. However she is upset with Rob after he seemingly ignores her. In the present time, Beth brings another man, Travis, to Rob's party after her friend, Lily, invites her to come. However Beth and Rob start arguing and she and Travis leave the party. When the monster attacks New York, Rob calls Beth, but is distressed to hear her say that she was trapped in her father's apartment during the onslaught. Most of the film's plot is to rescue her and ensure her safety, a feat which Rob is able to accomplish, albeit with great difficulty (interceptions by the Monster, its parasites and the army making it difficult). Finally, when Rob and the others find her, she was unconscious, impaled from a spike on her building's structure, and near death. After the rescue, she, along with Rob and Hud, board a helicopter that is treated to a bird's eye view of the assault on the monster, but is attacked in the process. She survives the monster attack and crash. After the death of Hud, she and Rob retreat under the bridge and make a final recording, dedicating it to their final moments and to their deceased friends and family. The bridge is then destroyed by the bombs on the final trump card used in the attempt to kill the monster. A recording after their apparent demise shows Rob and Beth at Coney Island. She ends the recording and the film with her words: "I had a good day". Her ultimate fate is unknown.

Hudson Platt

Hudson Platt, nicknamed Hud, (played by T. J. Miller) was a friend of Jason and Rob and filmed almost the entire attack of the Monster and was more of a comic relief for the film. He took over the filming job, when Jason asked him to film the guests and the party, due to Jason's laziness. During the party, he was trying to flirt with Marlena by asking her questions, but failed. Then he filmed the whole argument between Rob and Beth. Then he told everyone at the party about Rob and Beth had an ongoing sexual affair after Lily told him why they're arguing, which irritated Jason and Lily. While comforting Rob with Jason, the monster attacks the harbors of New York. He filmed a series incidents ranging from the destruction of the Brooklyn Bridge, a brief battle with The Monster up close, the city under ruins, looting and various lives lost during the night. While in the subways, Hud begins speculation as to what was the monster's origins (ending up with a brief sarcastic remark from Marlena). Hud is depicted as always being attacked while filming. The first attack was the encounter with the parasites while the group was traveling on foot in the subway tunnels, but he was saved by Marlena, after which she died a gruesome death from a bite from the parasites. He was the only one emotionally affected by her death, and was depicted as briefly mourning and weeping uncontrollably after they were discharged from the Hospital, but still chooses to go with Rob and Lily to rescue Beth. After saving Beth, he, along with Rob and Beth (Lily was evacuated on a secondary chopper), boarded the helicopter, and the 3 were granted a look at one last assault on the monster by a B-2 Bomber. However, the Monster attacked their chopper in the confusion. The helicopter was forced to crash in Central Park. Here, Hud dies after the creature spots him on the ground (this was also the full cover shot of the creature), stares at him briefly, and then attempts to eats him, before throwing his body to the ground.

Lily Ford

Lily Ford (played by Jessica Lucas) is the friend of Beth and girlfriend of Jason. In the film, she suggested to Jason that they should throw a farewell party for his brother, Rob. She also invited Beth, which made Rob angry, leading to an argument with Beth. When the monster attacked the Statue of Liberty, She along with Rob and the group went to the Brooklyn Bridge, where Jason was killed shortly. After that, they went to the subway, where she grieves about her boyfriend with Rob. While walking in the subway's tunnels, they ran afoul of the The Monster's parasites, they barely escape with their lives, with Marlena severely bitten. Shortly, after arriving in a field hospital outside the tunnels, she bares witness to Marlena's death. Fearless of what is to come despite Marlena's death and what the officials say about The Monster, she along with Rob and Hud push on to rescue Beth, which they successfully do after catching The Monster battling the US army in the distance. Later, the group finally arrives at the final extraction point for civilians. Lily was the only one of the group to be boarded on one of the safer routed choppers. Her fate is unknown, but more likely is still alive because she was separated from the group and taken to a different helicopter when they were being evacuated.

Jason Hawkins

Jason Hawkins (played by Mike Vogel) was Rob's brother and boyfriend of Lily. He was filming the planning of the party over the tape of Rob and Beth's journey to Coney Island. He then handed the camera to Hud, a friend of his and Rob. During the party, Rob and Beth argue and this lead to Rob being upset. Jason tries to comfort his brother, but it did little to quell his brother's dilemma. Soon the monster attacks and Jason and the others retreated to the Brookyln Bridge after the monster destroyed the town ahead of their apartment. Jason was separated from the other's during the evacuation and was killed by a swing of the monster's tail when the monster attacked the bridge directly. Later in the subways, the group mourns his death. Rob has to inform their mother of his demise.

Marlena Diamond

Marlena Diamond (played by Lizzy Caplan) is one of the the characters who came to Rob's party. However, it is revealed that she didn't know him and just came with a friend while answering Hud, Hud asks her to say something about Rob while attempting to flirt with her. However, this move fails, and she is seen mostly avoiding Hud for the remainder of the party. When the monster attacks, she catches a glimpse of the monster and told the group that it was eating people. When they retreated to the subway en route to save Beth, the parasites from the Monster attacked the group. Hud nearly died in the encounter, but Marlena saves him at the cost of being severely bitten. While tending to her wounds, she and Hud share an intimate moment. After finding their way into one of the field hospitals near the subways, she started to bleed from her eyes and nose, she was hastily escorted against her will by men in Hazmat suits into a sterile room, crying out for Hud. She dies by inflating and seemingly explodes.

Main characters in Cloverfield/Kishin

Kishin Aiba

Kishin Aiba is a troubled boy, who had been repeatedly tormented by a couple of bullies in a public restroom within their school. Although he was saved from humiliation by a girl named Aiko Sasahara, they continue their activities with him and decided to leave him within the confines of an emergency safety house. He had a long history of being bullied due to his mother being "strange", and along with her, he was badly ridiculed for this. When his mother died, he was so stricken with grief that even into his teens, he wished he had died with her. His emotional torment continues, and which at the same time the monster begins to come to surface within Tagruato's oceans. He later escapes the school grounds with Aiko's help to his house after seeing news coverage about the monster. Here, the two bond together while on their way to Kishin's apartment to seek shelter, only to stumble across an unknown cult hell bent on using him for a dark purpose tied to the monster. He was last seen under the mercy of the cult. Unlike his mother, Kishin and his father are not on good terms as seen in some panels. Medical records seen at his father's room, along with the cult tracking him down, heavily implies that Kishin is part of a series of experiments, scientific or mystical, that ties him to the product Slusho! and The monster itself. In the third chapter, it is seen that his system has been mixed with the monster's own stimuli to allow him to control it without him falling to its wrath. Kishin's father confirms this as an act of sabotage by his mother, whereby she also used the monster's cells but died in the process. Kishin succumbs to madness and now uses the monster to cause more destruction. He is able to control the monster without it harming him, it thinking that the child is its kin or brethren.

Mrs. Aiba

Mrs. Aiba is the mother of Kishin. According to the manga she was ostracized by the children and the adults due to her eccentric nature. She is deeply attached to her son, comforting him at his troubled times. She didn't care for her well being so as long as her son believes in her. She dies due to an unknown disease after a while, leaving her son alone and in emotional pain for most of his life after that. her biological structure, along with her child, is somewhat tied to the monster's own after attempting to fuse the monster's cells with her own so she may be able to control the monster. Though it is implied this process killed her later in life.

Aiko Sasahara

Kishin Aiba's classmate. She keeps an uptight attitude and is optimistic despite her troubled past with her parents. Her father died 2 years prior to the story and her mother is an abusive drunk who exploits her husband's finances over their daughter's well being, she is determined to live her life on her own terms, she has a deep fear for rodents/mice, as seen in the recent chapter. She escapes the school with Kishin after hearing a report on the monster's rampage on the coastlines of Japan, she bonds with Kishin by discussing his personal conflicts to one of Slusho!'s stars promoting the drink, Yuki. They arrive at Kishin's residence where two unknown men from a cult comes looking for Kishin, she tries to seek help but to no avail and is last seen being escorted to a shelter by the cult's underlings, but her mind is still set on saving Kishin. She is thrown out of shelter by the very same group that bullies kishin and is last seen fighting off the parasites before coming to view Kishin and the monster causing destruction in Japan. Unlike Kishin, she has good physical prowess and can fight two men if needed be, even able to defeat a parasite with no bites or injuries. She and Kishin has a fan following for one of the popstars promoting the product Slusho! from Tagruato named Yuki.

Kurosaki

Kurosaki is a sailor unknowingly escorting the monster in one of Tagruato's ships. He is a father-to-be and loves to show off pictures of his wife and unborn child to his fellow unit, much to their chagrin, However, he longs to return home to see his family again. When the monster escapes Tagruato's grasp, he and his unit attempt to fight off the beast whilst waiting for back up, only to fail miserably. He gives the last transmission for airstrike and laments his death while musing at his wife's picture before the monster claws its way into the ships hull, devouring him. Due to his bleached hair, many assumed before his name was revealed to be an American sailor, This is not the case as his name was mentioned in the second chapter. Before his death, it was heavily implied that he and his unit did not know of the monster's existence until the attack despite being briefed with the mission being regarded as classified.
