Kristy Lee Cook

Kristy Lee Cook (born January 18, 1984) is an American singer and a finalist on the seventh season of American Idol. She released an album, Devoted, under the name Kristy Lee. She is not related to fellow Idol contestant David Cook.

Biography

Early years

Kristy Lee Cook was born in Seattle, Washington to Larry and Carlene Cook and currently lives in a log cabin in Selma, Oregon. She enjoys camping, fishing, kick-boxing, hunting, Dancing to Polka Music, wearing Purple wigs, and horseback riding. She enjoys training horses by buying them when they are young and selling them to good homes.[1] She is the sister-in-law of Arena Football quarterback John Dutton.

She signed her first contract with BMI in 2001, when she was 17 years old; Britney Spears agreed to make a cameo appearance in her first music video.[2] According to her RMG page, Cook was signed to RCA Records/Arista Nashville in 1999 and the first artist signed to Spears' production company. RCA put Cook, along with other younger artists, on hold and eventually dropped her.[3]

After her label was dropped, Kristy Lee Cook moved to Dallas, Texas to attempt to pursue her career and gain more experience. She started modeling and featuring in commercials with the help of the Kim Dawson Agency. In 2005, she released her debut album Devoted under Ren-Hen Records. She was also the lead singer at Cowboys in Arlington, Dallas and San Antonio, Texas for two years.

In 2007, Cook returned home to Selma, Oregon to prepare for her tryouts for American Idol. Cook had to sell her "really good" barrel horse in order to try out for American Idol. She hopes to earn enough money so she can buy her horse back.[4]

American Idol

Cook auditioned for American Idol in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She sang "Amazing Grace". All three judges liked her voice and sent her straight through to Hollywood. While in Hollywood, her first song didn't impress the judges. For her second and final chance, she sang "Amazing Grace" again; as a result, she became one of the top 24 contestants in the semi-finals. She was the first girl performer of the season and sang "Rescue Me". The judges didn't care for her performance but gave her props since she was the first of the night and she had bronchitis. On March 12th, Kristy was placed in the bottom 3 alongside Syesha Mercado and David Hernandez. She was declared safe. On March 19, she was placed in the bottom three again with Carly Smithson and Amanda Overmyer, but she survived again. April 2nd 2008 once again she was placed in the bottom 3 alongside her 2 roommates Ramiele Malubay and Brooke White. While Malubay was sent home, Kristy and Brooke were left to stay. She has locked up a spot in the American Idol Top 10 Concert Tour for the upcoming summer.
