This is a list of characters in the video game Baten Kaitos Origins.

Characters

Since the game is a prequel, many characters that appear in Baten Kaitos also appear in Baten Kaitos Origins. Geldoblame is 25, Almarde is 19, Gibari is 14, Ladekahn is 12, Savyna is 5, and Kalas and Lyude will soon be born. Other characters include Anna, the barkeeper from Nashira, who is 9 in Baten Kaitos II, and Palolo II, father of Palolo III. Many of the characters actually have the same roles as in the original, so for example, Anna still works at or runs the Nashira bar, despite being only a child. Another example is Giacomo, the scythe wielding Imperial Officer in Baten Kaitos, who appears again as a villain at age 13; the battle that takes place with him features a remix of the track Chaotic Dance, now named Chaotic Dance 2.

Furthermore, entities such as the "Lord of The Lava Caves" (resembling an angler fish), while only mentioned in Baten Kaitos, are actually fought in this game. Many of these major encounters can be fought again if the player has the appropriate quest Magnus, e.g., the "Lava Lord's Skull". This can be done late in the game by visiting a scientist within the Colosseum after becoming champion.

According to the game plot, the player takes on the role of an invisible spirit residing within the heart of Sagi. In practice, the player directly guides the actions of the three main characters. These characters are Sagi, Guillo, and Milliarde (Milly). The key characters are as follows:

Playable characters

Guardian Spirit

A creature (in reality, the player) that watches over Sagi and his party. Sagi occasionally addresses the spirit by turning toward the screen and asking him/her to make a decision. These decisions can affect what magnus come up in battle. For example: if you make good decisions with you spirit, healing magnus will come up when low on health.

Sagi

(Voiced by Crawford Wilson) The Protagonist of Baten Kaitos Origins, Sagi joined the Imperial army at age 15 in the hope of helping his mother Gena and his adopted siblings. Eager to prove himself he was given a questionable mission to assassinate the emperor "Olgan". While on this mission he ends up in the middle of a power struggle that will lead to him discovering who he is and what destiny awaits him. Being the rookie of the army meant he was often picked on and didn't have many friends except for Guillo and Valaara who often looked out for him. While attempting to assassinate the Emperor however he instead discovers his lifeless body slumping over his table. To add insult to injury he is then attacked by his fellow platoon men who betray him by orders of Baelheit. With the help of Geldoblame he escapes with his life and is sent on the run with his friend and companion, Guillo. During his journey's a mysterious connection between himself and the "Malpercio's afterlings/Umbras". When they are killed Sagi often has pain-laden blackouts during which he is transported to a different time and place, with a different group of people. Though these people claim to have known him (by a different name) since he was a small child, Sagi has no memory of them whatsoever, all these mysteries are revealed as the story unravels. Ultimately Sagi discovers that he is not as eveyone originally thought, "a spiriter" but is instead a byproduct of the late emperor's scheme to produce a "man made spiriter". He is a "Maladieter" a child infused with a shard/body part of the long dead God Malpercio, thus granting him incredible power and once mastered made him as powerful as a normal spiriter.

Guillo

(Voiced by Maura Gale (female) and TC Carson(male)) At the beginning of the game this strange creature is thought to be a primitive type of paramachina, a semi autonomous combat robot used by the Alfard Empire. However, unlike the mindless paramachina, Guillo is able to speak and think for itself. Its appearance also differs greatly from that at a typical paramachina. Guillo is often referred to as a puppet. It is outspoken, and greatly dislikes Milliarde; it often calls her a wench, questions her motives, and threatens to eat her ("Sagi, I can't take it anymore! Please let me eat her! She's due for an eating!"). Guillo has no memory whatsoever of its life prior to being unearthed by a young Sagi. Guillo's body appears to be hollow, as a child in Gena's care once hid inside it during a game of hide-and-seek. Guillo always speaks with two voices simultaneously, one male and one female. It seems fond of making similes about animals indigenous to the Baten Kaitos universe. (such as "I've seen braver fantails guarding their ducklings!") Guillo also often threatens to eat people (particularly Milly), though if it ever actually does so (or how it would go about eating anything, given that it has no mouth) is unclear. When Guillo is alarmed, its normally shadowed-over eyes suddenly glow blue. When Guillo is hurt or angry, they glow red. Though Guillo is often referred to with male pronouns by fans, Guillo is referred to as an "it" in official material. Guillo is also considered by some fans to be transgendered. Though Guillo was crafted as a sexless puppet, it has the voices of both a man and a woman. Guillo also has a very masculine personality, yet its chest plate has the impression of breasts and its feet resemble high heels. It also declares itself part of a potential love "quadrangle" for the affection of the main character, Sagi, who is male, though it may have meant sibling love, friendship, or simply loyalty.

At the end of the journey Guillo sacrifices its existence to save Sagi and Milly; nonetheless, its head is recovered and can be seen after the credits roll. Mysteriously its eyes still glow red after losing its body, suggesting its personality and "life" may transcend having a body.

Milly

(Voiced by Shanelle Workman) She is a strong-willed and surprisingly powerful girl that saves Sagi and Guillo during their escape from the empire and a first confrontation with Giacomo. Although her real name is Milliarde, she asks to be called simply Milly and claims that it was because she simply can't stand seeing people get hurt that she intervened. At first it seems apparent that she has ulterior motives as she was sent by her father to verify whether Sagi was a spiriter or a malidieter, she falls in love with Sagi, confesses her past deed, and eventually becomes a welcomed member of the party. Despite being sent to "Magic school" in Anuenue and being brought up in a secluded and pampered aristocratic family, Milly often dreamed of adventure. She is a practical thinker and often slept through the more "Impractical" classes during magic school. During her early years she was chaperoned to and from school but often stopped at the "Nekkar Quietlands" to gather rocks and gaze at the changing color spring. She is the daughter of Baelheiht and a product of Machina infusion in humans making her stronger than a normal human and a cyborg in the process. At the end of their Journey she witnesses her Father's death, her own origins and ultimately finds happiness at Sagi's side as they are wed and live in Mira with Duke Calbren.

Enemies

Wiseman

(Voiced by Neil Kaplan) A potentate who lived 1000 years prior to the beginning of the game's story. He appears to have invented and/or propagated the magnus card technology that is a staple of the Baten Kaitos world. Soon, he took this power to the next level: by amplifying the power of a person's heart, he became capable of transforming people into magnus, absorbing them for an unknown purpose. His campaign of "promagnation" - encouraging all people to strengthen and rely solely upon their hearts, and killing or forcibly transforming those who refuse - is an important aspect of the game's story. Wiseman always wears an unusual suit of armor; with a bird-like head, large, crystalline eyes, and feathered, winglike arms. Though his body is human-like, it is incorporeal. His wings of the heart are unlike any other character's, forming a circle of floating, daggerlike objects. The strength of his heart is said to be "beyond reckoning," which gives him enormous magical power.

Little else is known about Wiseman, including his origins. Human or otherwise, Wiseman always refers to himself in the plural sense; whether this is a use of the royal we or an indication that he is some form of conglomerate being is unclear.

Baelheit

(Voiced by Fred Tatasciore) The creator of machina, Baelheit is a strong supporter of Emperor Olgan's new world vision and popular among Alfard's citizenry. Always serious and forthright, this Alfard lord seeks to secure power once the Emperor hatches his plans.

Geldoblame

The right hand of Verus, as well as an unusually close friend. A man of unflinching integrity, Geldoblame is a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge. He comes across as a crazed and power-hungry madman, yet when his belongings are examined it shows an admiration of children's toys and even possibly a slight obsession with Questor Verus. He is deeply concerned about the future of the Alfard Empire. After being betrayed by Verus, Geldoblame assumes the title of Emperor, seemingly going insane in the process.

Verus

A legendary spiriter. Some fear that spiriters are doomed to influence the fate of the entire world, a stigma that Verus and Sagi share. Though crippled during the old wars, he remains a proud, stalwart warrior. As such, Emperor Olgan has placed his trust in Verus and appointed him as the commander of Alfard's imperial army. Nevertheless, he assists his fellow spiriter, Sagi, when he can. It is hinted that he may be Sagi's biological father.

Shanath

(Voiced by Kirk Thornton) (Age 27) Commander of Baelheit's personal army, the Dark Service, as well as Savyna's biological or adoptive father. Shanath, along with the Machina Vanguard had his very own Machina Arma. Similar to Shanath's Arma, his was strapped to his back with a wing like structure, head gear, and claw like hand gear. Long after his death it is revealed that he was a double agent working for Verus.

Valara

(Voiced by Tasia Valenza) (Age 18) A high ranked officer in Baelheit's army. She believes and respects the power of machina. In her eyes, machina will secure Alfard's power over the island nations, ushering in an era in which she will assuredly reap the benefits. As such, she bears no love for spiriters like Sagi and Verus, claiming that theirs is the old way. Her motto is "work is work", and she tends to care not about the well-fare of others when it comes to her work as a member of the Machina Vanguard. Though she is seen as rather socio-pathic, in truth, she has a somewhat friendly side shown to Sagi, despite Sagi and Valara being enemies.

Heughes

(Voiced by Crispin Freeman) (Age ??) Another officer at Baelheit's service and a member of the Machina Vanguard along with Valara and his brother Nasca. He is shown cold and ruthless, although he cares a lot for his brother, even to the point of being overprotective. He is also very proud of his strength, and shows a lot of passion for the power of Machina like his brother Nasca. His particular Machina is rather different from Valara's and Nasca's in that it's an arm cannon that is strapped to his back, which holds the capability of not only a good defense, but offense as well. Considering Heughes holds his own natural powers, it's possible that the Arma extracts Heughes powers and amplifies them, but nothing is known for sure.

Nasca

(Voiced by Avrielle Corti) (Age ??) The younger brother of Heughes, and a member of the Machina Vanguard. He has a strong desire to prove himself as a worthy and non-dependent soldier to both Valara and his brother. Like his older brother Heughes, he has a strong passion for Machina and the expansion of Alfard's regime across the sky. Some of his behaviorisms can be seen as rather meniacle based on some rambling he does as well as laughing. His particular Machina Arma is closer to Valara's design then Heughes. His Machina Arma is a rather large tank like structure with a strong plethora of cannon fire power.

Giacomo

(Voiced by Yuri Lowenthal) (Age 13) A skilled scythe wielding young Imperial warrior in the Dark Service. More than anything else Giacomo desires power. He has taken a particular dislike to Sagi as he is the first person to beat him in battle. He has an extreme rivalry with Sagi, which comes to an end after being defeated by him numerous times and finally in Pherkad. Upon his defeat Giacomo exclaimed "Power. .. I want power!!! Overwhelming strength beyond that of any Man! I'd give everything I have. .. for that. ..". These words are a precursor to the man he would become in Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

Non Playable Characters (NPC's) and Other Characters

  • Gibari- (Voiced by Beng Spies) (Age 14) Gibari is the son of Diadem's head knight, Rambari. He is also the best friend of King Ladekahn. Gibari is mischievous and fun loving even though it sometimes gets him into trouble. He dislikes the myths and superstitions of his father and the fishermen in Nashira where he grew up. This sometimes puts him at odds with his father who does not approve of his son's antics, and is responsible for both "Kahn" and "Gib", as they call each other. Despite this however father and son are quite fond of one another nevertheless. In a stunning show of loyalty, Rambari sacrifices himself in order to protect the king. This seems to shock both children into maturity, as King Ladekhan dismissed Gibari from the Knights of Diadem in order to protect him (as he knew Gibari would do the same as his father if the need arose), and Gibari in general became more independent and less of a loose cannon. He is a playable character in Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean.
  • Lake Monster- The monster located at Boetin Lake. The second umbra fought, and uses ice. Sagi defeats him, and when he returns to the village, only to find Valara's there. She attacks with her Machina Arma. The Monster attacks her in mid-battle, only to succumb to her cannon. Not much is known about this umbra.
  • Plant Monster- The monster in Nunki Valley that fuses with a plant, and the fifth umbra. Sagi sets it free by cutting away the plant stem, but the umbra is shot by Valara and her machina arma anyway.
  • Rambari- (Voiced by Richard McGonagle) Gibari's father. He was a fisherman in Nashira before coming to the palace. He is head of the knights and King Ladekahn's trainer. He has a kind heart but he is very serious and gets irritated at Gibari and Ladekahn's antics. He's also very superstitious to the point of near-stupidity. He sacrifices his life for his King and dies a hero's death.
  • Celsica- (Voiced by Janellen Steininger) Rambari's second in command. She thinks of him as a father figure. She appears to be the only female knight and as a result has become well respected by the citizens and fellow knights alike. All the other knights love her for her compassionate heart. As a child she was an orphan and this lead to her isolated and reserved personality. When she witnesses Rambari's death it proves too much for her and she transforms into the 4th "Umbra/Afterling". She dies at the hands of Nasca's Machina Arma.
  • Almarde- (Voiced by Candi Milo) (Age 19) A woman in Azha Village. Revealed to be Lyude's nurse in Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. She is kind and soft spoken. Lyuuvan and Almarde are shown to have a relationship, despite Lyuuvan being married and having two children. The apparent product of this tryst is Lyude who looks much more like Almarde than his siblings. This theory is further validified when Skeed insults Lyude by saying he has "stone-carver's blood" in his veins. This implies that Lyude is part Azhani, even though Skeed and Vallye are purebred Empire citizens. Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • Ladekahn- (Voiced by Benjamin Bryan) (Age 12) The king of Diadem, Ladekahn is a sensible, honest, and thoughtful ruler. He always wants what is best for his people. He takes his responsibility as king seriously, though he tends to enjoy getting into mischief with his best friend, Gibari. Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • Anna - (Voiced by Andi Methany) (Age 9) She seems to work at the tavern in Nashira, even though she is only 9. It is never explicitly stated but perhaps her parents own it. She is a friend of Gibari and Reblys. Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • Georg- (Age: 42) Giacamo's father, a brilliant Mechanic who was born in the Azha village. Georg would eventually be recruited by Geldoblame who tasked him to design many incredible devices, including the empire's winglets and ultimately the divine Child Fee and Kalas. Appears in flashbacks in Eternal Wings.
  • Gena- (Voiced by Andi Methany) (Age 36) Sagi's biological mother. She runs the orphanage in Hassaleh. Her wings are of unusual size and beauty, and are reputed by her acquaintances to be "the most beautiful in the world." Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • Palolo II- (Voiced by Aaron Fors) also known as the ever cool and collected "Master of mischief". He is a very skilled young man, who also happens to be a friend of Ladekahn and Gibari. He appears to be a magician of high order and known to appear and disappear in a whirlwind. Throughout the story his skill is revealed to be second to almost none his age. He uses martial arts to subdue empire guards at one point and at another blocks a full frontal attack by a "machina Arma". Also the future father of Palolo III. The mother is unknown, though fans have proposed that it could be Lolo.
  • Bein- (Voiced by Alex Fernandez) A native of Azah who is very patriotic to his village and people and believes that they are nothing more than empire slaves, he wishes to change that and to that end he became a terrorist Bombing the empire to get revenge. He befriends Sagi but is ultimately found out and chased into the lava caves where he succumbs to his grief and transforms into the 3rd "Umbra/Afterling". He dies at the hands of Valara's Machina Arma.
  • Savyna-(Age 5, does not speak) She can be seen by the player, following Shanath around. She seems to be Shanath's biological daughter because of their similar features. From the events that unfold, it seems rather apparent that Savyna was introduced to battle and gore very early in her life. She seems to have been psychologically scarred by this, as she is entirely mute and smiles incessantly, even when asked direct questions. However, she is still shown to act like a child, usually bouncing a toy ball at key moments in the plot involving Shanath. She has a significant emotional attachment to Shanath, evidenced by Savyna remaining with him after he is killed and refusing to leave, even when the party tries to remove her. At one point, Savyna is nearly killed by a crazed paramachina, and Guillo tells her that death will always follow her, probably forming much of her personality in later life. ("If you feel you have something you need to carry on, then go. Find your path in that. Just never forget. Death will never be far from your side for as long as you walk it [the path]. The risk of your own death and the death of those you come into contact with is always there.") Milly becomes angry that Guillo would say that to a child, and Guillo responds that she is not a child, as she is now responsable for her own fate. She is a playable character in Eternal Wings.
  • Lolo- (Voiced by Cat Taber) (Age 18) A young woman from Anuenue. She is an inventor and builder. She fixes Sagi's ship and in the process seems to have a crush on him. This infuriates both Milly and Guillo.
  • Corellia- (Voiced by Kym Hoy) also known as Queen Corellia the Fairy Guide. She is the beautiful and apparently ageless Queen of the Rainbow Nation, Anuenue. She is a lover of peace and a great pacifist. She appears to be more formal than in Baten Kaitos, though it is assumed that the events of Origins soften her demeanor, as she is a bit of a jerk in this game. She also apparently relies on the Celestial Tree for her immortality, as is revealed through numerous optional dialogues.
  • Lyuvann- (Voiced by Peter Renaday) An Imperial Soldier on mission to Azha Village. Father of two and high born/purebred Empire citizen. As a pure blood he was forbidden to marry anyone from any other nation or he be stripped of his rank and file. He has what appears to be a loving relationship with the beautiful Almarde.
  • Reblys- (Age 9) The friend and rival of Gibari, also friends with Anna. He helps Sagi and the other find the escape ruit out of town when it's taken over by the empire. also a competent fisherman.
  • Olgan- (Voiced by Enn Reitel) The emperor of Alfard who is assassinated in the beginning of the game, and Shannath's father.
  • Tik- (Voiced by Sherry Lynn) & Wacho- (Voiced by EG Daily) Sagi's younger adapted siblings who look up to him. They are always getting into trouble together and always fighting and making up. They reside with Gena in Sagi's hometown.
  • Lord Rodolfo- (Voiced byChris Edgerly) A greedy social climber. Loyal to his people but loves money more than anything else. Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • Duke Calbren- (Age: 41), the Duke of Mira.
  • Elder Kamroh- (Voiced by Chris Edgerly) Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • Krumly- (Voiced by Liam O'Brien) Also appears in Eternal Wings.
  • The Dark Brethren- (Voiced by Steve Kramer) Little is known of the Dark Brethren. They appear to be extra dimensional beings of enormous power who dwell in Zaurak Keep. They are willing to barter with mortals who pass their trials, usually an exchange of the soul of the mortal for some of their power. They are reputed to be able to destroy anything.
  • Malpercio-It is revealed throughout the story that Malpercio was in fact five human siblings who sold their souls to the Dark Brethren in order to stop an even greater evil called Wiseman. They were then killed by the Children of the Earth, who ironically failed to kill Wiseman, the original cause of the war of the gods. These events caused the resentment that Malpercio feels for the world in Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean.
  • Seph- (Voiced by Robin Atkin Downes) (Age 22) The leader of a group of five siblings who have made it their goal to defeat Wiseman. Seph is serious and extremely dedicated to this cause. He is also passionate and unflinching once he has made up his mind. His full name is Seph "He" Yaze, and the root of his name is probably the Latin root for 'head'.
  • Thoran- (Voiced by Dave Fouquette) (Age 19) Seph's second in command, and presumably the second-oldest sibling as well, as he is the tallest as well as the second struck down. He is hot-headed and tends to want to act before thinking. He is also more playful than the others, though he still takes their mission seriously. His full name is Thoran "Che" Ladra, and the root of his name is likely from the Latin root for chest, 'thorax'.
  • Pieda- (Voiced by Kim Mai Guest) (Age 19) A member of the group of five who have made it their mission to defeat Wiseman, and the sole sister among four brothers. She is the third-born child, as she is struck down third. Pieda is calm and collected. She is very serious but still sympathetic. Her full name is Pieda "Le" Monarna, and the root of her name is likely from the Latin root for feet, 'pedi'.
  • Ven- (Voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch) (Age 18) A member of the group of five who have made it their mission to defeat Wiseman. He is probably the fourth-born, as he is struck down fourth and concern about the youngest sibling is directed at Marno, not him. He is rather quiet and shy. He has a big heart and has his emotions close to the surface. He can't fly very well and so has to wait for the others a lot. His full name is Ven "Bo" Norco, and the root of his name, although probably Latin like his siblings, is unknown.
  • Marno- (Not voiced aside from Sagi speaking in his place) A member of the five siblings who comprised what would one day become Malpercio; "The Wicked God". He is the youngest sibling, as mentioned by Seph. For reasons not immediately clear, Sagi seems to be mistaken for him by the other four siblings. He is the Blue-green haired sibling whose face remains covered in the opening cinema. His full name is Marno "Ar" [spirit name] and the root of his name likely comes from the Latin word for arm as a body part, 'armus'. This is not to be confused with the unrelated root 'arma', meaning 'arm' as a weapon. Incidentally, the later root is used in the term 'Machina Arma'.
