Fair use

All material under fair use is copyrighted to begin with. Each material under fair use claim must include a reason for fair use. Please review our rationale for fair use.

  • {{Fairold}} - For use with images from old sources where copyright may have expired but not quite old enough for this to be certain, but where use would be contended to be fair use if still subject to copyright (eg, advertising from companies that have been out of business for 50 + years).
  • Needs extended section on usage.
  • Needs extended section on usage.
    • Covers of various media - note all of these require a reduced-quality image, insufficient for quality reproduction or bootlegging purposes, and also that they illustrate articles about the media item itself, not a tangentially related subject.
      • {{Albumcover}} - for album covers
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{Boardgamecover}} - for board game cover art
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{Bookcover}} - for book covers
        • Rewritten — I think this is just fine.
      • {{Comiccover}} - for comic book covers (trade paperbacks and the like go under {{Bookcover}}, however)
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{DVDcover}} - for DVD covers
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{Gamecover}} - for video game covers of reduced quality.
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{Magazinecover}} - for magazine covers
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{Newspapercover}} - for newspaper covers
        • Needs extended section on usage.
        • {{TIME}} - for TIME covers
          • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{Video tape cover}} - for video tape cover images
        • Needs extended section on usage.
    • {{AustraliaGov}} - for works under Crown Copyright by the Government of Australia.
      • Overly blanket category? How does AU law work in the US? Potential delete.
    • {{Coatofarms}} - For images of a "Coat of arms" or crest.
      • Needs extended section on usage.
    • {{Logo}} - for logos
    • {{money}} - for images of the official currency of a country. These may be in the public domain, or they may not.
      • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{money-EU}} - for images of the official currency of the EU. These are copyrighted.
      • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{money-US}} - for images of the official currency of the US. These are ineligible for copyright, and therefore in the public domain.
      • No problem.
    • {{Philippines-fairuse}} - for images used under the fair use provision of Philippine copyright law.
      • Do we need to be under Philippine copyright law? How does this apply to sources copyrighted BOTH in the Phillipines and the US? Potential delete.
    • {{Pokeimage}} - for Pokémon images
      • Needs extended section on usage. Also note on trademarks.
    • {{Poster}} - for poster images of reduced quality.
        • Overly blanket category, should be deleted. Nothing unique about posters to differentiate them from other images. A new tag for movie posters only should be created and treated like the covers of DVDs.
    • {{Promophoto}} - for promotional photos of people, e.g. headshots or posed shots
        • Needs rewrite, guidelines for use.
    • {{Screenshot}} - for screenshots of websites, software applications, films, television broadcasts and video games. Currently, no distinction is made between screenshots of proprietary programs and screenshots of free software. If the screenshot is of software showing a web page, then tag it with both {{software-screenshot}} and {{web-screenshot}}.
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{film-screenshot}} - Screenshots from movies and television programs
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{game-screenshot}} - Screenshots of computer games and video games
        • Needs extended section on usage.
      • {{software-screenshot}} - Screenshots of software
        • Needs extended section on usage.
        • {{mac-software-screenshot}} - Screenshots of Macintosh software
          • Needs extended section on usage and note on trademarks.
        • {{windows-software-screenshot}} - Screenshots of Windows software
          • Needs extended section on usage and note on trademarks.
      • {{web-screenshot}} - Screenshots of web pages
        • Needs extended section on usage and note on trademarks.
        • {{wikipedia-screenshot}} - Screenshots of Wikipedia web pages.
          • I don't really understand this one. Potential rewrite?
            • This is because WP content is under two licences (the GFDL for content, the GPL for the software) that are both copyleft. Therefore the screenshots are under a complicated system of licences, and it is clearest to write it in this way. [[smoddy]] 16:15, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
