Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Circeus (talk | contribs) at 23:33, 12 August 2005 (→‎[[:Category:Geologic feature of the Solar System not on Earth stubs]]). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page only deals with the deletion of stub types, which consist of a template and a category, and are intended to be used for sorting stubs. Stub templates that are missing categories and stub categories without associated templates are also appropriate here. All other templates or categories nominated for deletion have to be put on WP:TFD or WP:CFD, respectively.

About this page

Putting a stub type on SfD, and what happens afterwards

  • Put {{sfd-t}} on the stub template
  • Put {{sfd-c}} on the stub category
  • List the new stub and/or category on Template:sfd-current. This will let several relevant pages know of the nomination
  • List the stub type below in a new subsection at the top of the section which has the current date. If that section does not yet exist, create it.
    • Mention the template as well as the category (if it exists), like this:
      ==== {{tl|banana stub}} / [[:Category:Banana stubs]] ====
    • Also mention how many articles currently use the template, and if it is listed anywhere else.
    • Of course, state your reason for nominating the stub type for deletion!
  • After a voting period of seven days, action will be taken if there is consensus on the fate of the stub type. Please do not act before this period is over.
  • Archived discussions are logged per the instructions at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log, and are located at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/Deleted and Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/Not deleted.

Possible reasons for the deletion of a stub type

  • They are not used in any article, and their category is empty
  • They overlap with other stub categories, or duplicate them outright
  • Their scope is too limited - As a rule of thumb, there should be at least 50 appropriate stubs in existence
  • The stub category or template is misnamed. In this case, make this clear when nominating and propose a new category or template name. Note that - in the case of a template but not a category - it may be more appropriate to make it into a redirect

What this page is not for

You should, however, notify the WikiProject Stub sorting of all stub types that are problematic but do not match the criteria for listing here.

Typical voting options

  • Keep (do not delete or modify)
  • Delete (delete template and category)
  • Merge with xx-stub (Delete category, redirect template to xx-stub)
  • Merge with xx-stub without redirect (delete category and template, put xx-stub on all articles that use it)
  • Change scope (reword the template, typically giving it a larger scope. Usually also means renaming the category)
  • BJAODN (add to Wikipedia:Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense, then delete)

When voting, please try to give a more substantial reason than simply "I like it/find it useful" or "I dislike it/don't find it useful"

Current listings

According to {{sfd-current}}, the following stub types are being discussed on this page. If you notice a discrepancy, please correct the template. Template:Sfd-current

Used on only one article. Unintuitively named, at least to me. (The stub name doesn't appear related to the category name, but then again I don't know anything about the subject matter ...). Scope appears to be narrow. --TheParanoidOne 22:56, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This shouldn't be deleted, but it needs renaming. It's an absurdly clumsy title, and could be changed to the much simpler Extraterrestrial geological feature stubs. The Singing Badger 01:49, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

it certailnly could do with changing, it IS clumsy. Grutness...wha? 01:54, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
hack, my eyes! By all means, Rename! Circeus 23:33, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Waaay too specific, and already adequately covered by {{board-game-stub}}. Little chance that it will get many more than its current seven (count 'em!) stubs. Name is non-standard, too (no hyphen) Grutness...wha? 11:12, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. Scope too narrow considering there are currently almost 800 stubs in game-stub/board-game-stub. Not needed. Not likely to be needed in the future. --TheParanoidOne 19:55, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Mahjong is more of a card game than a board game, the cards just happen to be rather thick -- indeed I have a set with actual cards in place of tiles. But the general method of play and feel is not like that of most Board games nor does it fit the definition in that article. If this is upmerged, don't put it into {{board-game-stub}}, but into {{card-game-stub}} (if that gets created), or just into {{game-stub}}.
    • Heh. Showing my ignorance here, I guess. I've never actually seen real Mahjong. Only on a computer and it looks to me like tiles on a board, hence my comment. I guess I should go look up the Mahjong page ... --TheParanoidOne 20:35, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • well, it's a bit different because the "board" is created by the area between the tiles. It's not a fold-away area like Scrabble or Monopoly. But it's still usually regarded as a board game. Grutness...wha? 01:33, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{HI-stub}} / (now a redirect)

Poorly-named stub created by someone who didn't know we already had a {{Hawaii-stub}}. Currently a redirect, but the name is ambiguous (I instantly thought of heavy industry). Delete. Grutness...wha? 11:12, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge with Hawaii-stub. Since you're not from the U.S., I can see how you wouldn't know that HI is Hawaii's U.S. Postal Service abbreviation. So, I'm all for renaming it. I would say "without redirect", but there are between 50-100 articles that link to HI-stub. Is there a way that this can be automated, or is someone going to have to go in there and change all the articles manually? KeithH 08:59, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yesterday there were about 140 - I changed 60 of them myself in about half an hour. It's very easy to change them over. Changing stubs is what tiggers stub sorters do best! And no, I'm not from the US, but then again, only a small proportion of wikipedians are. if I get confused by it (and I think I've got a pretty good knowledge of geography), then I won't be the only one. Grutness...wha? 10:14, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{LADOT-stub}} / (no category)

Apparently something to do with transport in Los Angeles, but unneccessary and unused. No category, either. Grutness...wha? 11:12, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Eradicate any extremely overspecialized stubs!. FYI: It's for the Los Angeles (County) Department of Transportation—not to be confused with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (although I have no idea what the differences between the two agencies are). {{Activist-stub}} / (no category)

No category, not used by any articles. Michael 05:06, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

  • Delete. Another Maoririder contribution. --TheParanoidOne 05:17, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • This should discuss the (de)merits of the stub category regardeless of the user that created it. Nabla 21:17:18, 2005-08-10 (UTC)
  • Keep or broaden other stubs. There is a politicians stub, but that is too specific. Could it be broadened to include political activists? I just found this stub looking for a stub-type to categorize an agitator, (VONBLUVENS). OTOH, I don't understand the stubbing schemes so don't consider this a vote. Cheers, -Willmcw 07:53, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
    • Comment: Trouble is, the term "activist" is both vague and liable to be POV. Theoretically it could cover everyone from the Shoe-bomber to Ralph Nader. If it were kept it would need a major overhaul, probably to the point where it's better to delete this and start again from scratch - especially since this one is badly formed (it has no linking category). Grutness...wha? 13:14, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Unused. Probably not the best way to split {{Politician-stub}} as Grutness said. Nabla 21:17:18, 2005-08-10 (UTC)

{{Football-position stub}} / (no category)

Another Maoririder contribution. No category, improperly named and formatted, not used on any articles. No indication of whether it's American football, soccer, or some other football. But either way, I don't think there are 50 football positions, much less stub articles on them. --Mairi 02:30, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • There might be if you added all types of football, including the two rugbys (rugbies?) but yeah, this is pretty hideous. Delete. (BTW, I've added this to sfd-current). Grutness...wha? 02:46, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{MainePBS-stub}} / (no category)

Another one by User:Maoririder. No category, incorrectly linked. Used in only article (which is already tagged with {{PBS-stub}}, which only has 68 articles), so not needed. --Mairi 19:11, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{PBSKids-stub}} / (no category)

Another by User:Maoririder. Again no category, no edit link. Used in two articles, but still quite unneeded. --Mairi 19:11, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Created by Egalitus in May 2005. Used on only 5 articles. This figure has not changed since it was first mentioned on WP:WSS/D several months ago. Note that it also feeds into its parent category: Economics and finance stubs (aka {{econ-stub}}). --TheParanoidOne 11:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{Bakery-stub}}/(no category)

Well, since the date heading's there, we might as well use it! Another of User:Maoririder's little efforts. No category, no link, just a message saying this is a stub. Never used, never likely to be. Grutness...wha? 11:13, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sneaking in an entry while I'm busy typing mine, I see. ;)

Malformed orphaned redirect of {{Sectstub}}. Why keep it? Grutness...wha? 09:47, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Malformed orphaned redirect of {{Edu-stub}}. Why keep it? Grutness...wha? 09:47, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Poorly-named orphaned redirect of {{Laos-stub}}. (Lao are the people, Laos is the place, IIRC). Why keep it? Grutness...wha? 09:47, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure whether this should be here of CFD. It's an old attempt to rationalise the stub sorting project that has fallen out of use (hell, it was never really used). The only thing in it is the WSS/C page, and nothing else is ever likely to go in there. If the vote is within the parameters of this page, then I vote delete. (correction - it's empty) Grutness...wha? 02:01, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

August 1st

Stub for a user page. User pages don't need stubbing for reasons of going to expand them, or showing that they need expanding, making a stub type useless. Anyone wanting to put a fake stub type on their user page can easily do it with :''This Wikipedia user page is a stub.'', which isn't difficult. This doesn't have any purpose and I doubt it gets much use. Hedley 02:05, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. What's next? "Teenager-user-stub"? "Koala-lover-user-stub"? --Sn0wflake 02:17, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Del (PS - I added this to sfd-current and added the appropriate deletion template to user-stub. Please follow the instructions at the top of the page!). Grutness...wha? 03:52, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't that have been: this user is a stub; give him food to make him grow... and that's a delete vote Lectonar 10:31, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: This template was created, if I remember correctly, because people were adding {{stub}} to their user page, which messed up the stub category by having a bunch of users in it. BlankVerse 12:09, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Week Keep. Although I usually hate the standard joke template (e.g. the banana-stub and cow-stub that I think both got BJAODN'd), but I think that this category-less stub is harmless and should be kept. BlankVerse 12:09, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Delete, this Wikiuser cats and stubs are tiresome. -Splash 00:54, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

July 30th

Used on only two articles. Inconsistently named (nbc for template, NBC for category). Narrow scope (though this one could be argued against by the existence of a {{PBS-stub}}). --TheParanoidOne 10:13, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete
  • Keep. I was planning on deleating this template (which I had made), but if we were to put this on articles relating all-and-out to the NBC network, that would be fine; we could put this on all of the many NBC related articles that are stubs. For instance Alexandra Cabot (Law & Order: SVU Character) is one, otherwise delete.
Comment: Law and order:SVU is only shown on NBC in the U.S. - does it also get a stub category for each station it's shown on in other countries? I would have thought it more effective to split TV shows up by genre, the same way that books are split. Grutness...wha? 03:52, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rename of {{MDpolitician-stub}}

This stub has over 100 articles in it so I guess it's a decent child of {{US-politician-stub}}. But the name isn't intuitive. I see "MD" and immediately think "doctor". I propose a rename to {{Maryland-politician-stub}}. --TheParanoidOne 05:40, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: MD is Maryland's AP and postal abbreviation, but if it's that much of a problem then I suppose a renaming wouldn't hurt anyone. --tomf688<TALK> 15:48, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
Another comment: How many medical doctor politicians are there out there? ;) --tomf688<TALK> 20:50, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
A surprising number, actually. I can think of at least three current New Zealand MPs (out of 120 MPs), so if that tiny sample's anything to go by, 2.5% of politicians. And MD is also Moldova's ISO code. Which is why we don't use that sort of code for stubs when they can be avoided - too much ambiguity! Grutness...wha? 01:38, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"but if it's that much of a problem". That may indeed be a problem. I only knew that MD was Maryland because of the stub text. I'm sure there are many people like me who know (almost) nothing about US postal codes (or what an "AP" is). So are you now leaning towards a rename as your comment suggests? --TheParanoidOne 05:14, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and it's the car-plate code for Magdeburg :); Rename as per TheParanoidOne's suggestion Lectonar 06:38, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
or what an "AP" is - The Associated Press. --tomf688<TALK> 14:00, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
I work part time for a different "AP" - Allied Press. (my s.o. is also an A.P., but that's another matter, although, by coincidence, her g-grandfather is redlinked on the page I've just linked!) Grutness...wha? 14:17, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Rename. Altho I live in Maryland, so it's not ambiguous for me, I can see that it would be confusing. Also, wouldn't {{MD-politician-stub}} be the correct form if it were to keep the appreviation? --Mairi 20:08, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It would, if it were kept. Grutness...wha? 01:39, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

July 18th

This one's being proposed as the result of a discussion at WP:WSS/C over whether a separate {{unit-stub}} is needed(probably not, it's covered by standard-stub). The ambiguously named standard-stub has needed a rename for a while. Not only does it not refer to stubs that are standard (i.e., ordinary), nor to flags, but what it actually seems to be used for is standard forms of measurement - SI units, testing procedures and the like. As such, I'd like to suggest changing it to {{measurement-stub}} and Category: Measurement stubs, which, at the very least, is a bit more understandable. Grutness...wha? 08:44, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

renaming to {{measurement-stub}} is fine with me. Oleg Alexandrov 01:33, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as is unless you want to remove the various ISO and similar standards? Circeus 21:27, July 22, 2005 (UTC)
    • A compromise - measurement-stub as a redirect, and the category changed to "Standards and Measurements stubs"? It does seem that there are two different but connected things in this category, but I doubt it's big enough to split in two yet. Grutness...wha? 04:33, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • Sounds right to me. Circeus 12:58, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
