The 2007 NBA Draft was held on June 28, 2007 at the WaMu Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York City and was broadcast in the United States on ESPN.

The first 14 picks in the draft belonged to teams that had missed the 2007 NBA Playoffs, with their pick order determined through a lottery held on May 22, 2007. The remaining first-round picks and the second-round picks were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win-loss record in the 2006-07 NBA season.

This draft was quite forward-heavy and included several quality big-men. The 2007 NBA Draft also marked the first time three players drafted in the top 10 came from the same school (Florida), and for the first time five players in the top 10 all played in the NCAA Basketball National Championship Final. Greg Oden would end up missing the entire 2007-2008 season due to microfracture surgery. Kevin Durant drafted 2nd overall by the Seattle Sonics was named Rookie Of The Year[1].

Notable Undrafted Players

Lottery

Teams were in the 2007 draft lottery either by being eliminated from playoff consideration or through prior trades with non-playoff teams. The NBA performed a tie-breaker on April 20 to determine which teams get which picks.[5] The lottery was held on May 22, 2007 in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Fourteen ping-pong balls, numbered from one to 14, were placed in a bin to create 1,001 four-ball combinations. Each team was assigned a set number of four-ball combinations based on their won-loss record during the 2006-07 NBA season. Combinations were drawn to determine the top three picks, and then the remaining spots were assigned to the remaining teams based on their win-loss records.[6]

The first 14 picks were awarded as follows (with the winning lottery numbers for the top 3 picks).[7]

  1. Portland Trail Blazers (5–9–14–13)
  2. Seattle SuperSonics (14–4–11–10)
  3. Atlanta Hawks (5–6–9–4)
  4. Memphis Grizzlies
  5. Boston Celtics
  6. Milwaukee Bucks
  7. Minnesota Timberwolves
  8. Charlotte Bobcats
  9. New York Knicks (sent to Chicago Bulls)
  10. Sacramento Kings
  11. Indiana Pacers (sent to Atlanta Hawks)
  12. Philadelphia 76ers
  13. New Orleans Hornets
  14. Los Angeles Clippers

Despite having the three highest probabilities of earning a top-three pick, neither the Memphis Grizzlies (.643 probability of drawing a top three pick), Boston Celtics (.558), nor Milwaukee Bucks (.468), received a top-three pick. Mathematically, this situation occurs only 4.05% of the time.[8] Memphis, Boston and Milwaukee received the fourth, fifth and sixth picks, the lowest possible picks they could be awarded through the lottery.[9]

Below were the chances for each seed to get specific picks in the 2007 lottery (rounded to 3 decimal places)[10] (actual results in bold):

Seed Chances 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th
Memphis Grizzlies 250 .250 .215 .178 .357
Boston Celtics 199 .199 .188 .171 .319 .123
Milwaukee Bucks 156 .156 .157 .156 .226 .265 .041
Atlanta Hawks/Phoenix Suns* 119 .119 .126 .133 .099 .350 .161 .013
Seattle SuperSonics 88 .088 .097 .107 .261 .359 .084 .004
Portland Trail Blazers 53 .053 .060 .070 .439 .331 .046 .001
Minnesota Timberwolves 53 .053 .060 .070 .572 .226 .018
Charlotte Bobcats 19 .019 .022 .027 .725 .196 .011
Chicago Bulls (from New York Knicks) 19 .019 .022 .027 .784 .143 .005
Sacramento Kings 18 .018 .021 .025 .846 .087 .002
Atlanta Hawks (from Indiana Pacers)** 8 .008 .009 .012 .907 .063 .001
Philadelphia 76ers 7 .007 .008 .010 .935 .039 .001
New Orleans Hornets 6 .006 .007 .009 .960 .018
Los Angeles Clippers 5 .005 .006 .007 .982

*Pick would remain with Atlanta if it was in the top three. If it was not in the top three it would be transferred to the Phoenix Suns.
**Pick would remain with Indiana if it was in the top ten.

Eligibility rules

Beginning with the 2006 draft, high school players are not eligible for selection. The collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players union raised the age limit for draft eligibility from 18 to 19.[11][12]

  • All drafted players, regardless of nationality, must be born on or before December 31, 1988 (i.e., they must be at least 19 years old during the calendar year of the draft).
  • Players who graduated from a United States high school, regardless of nationality, must be at least one year removed from high school graduation.
