Proteopedia, is a collaborative, 3D wiki encyclopedia of proteins and other molecules.

Proteopedia is a wiki that contains a page for every entry in the Protein Data Bank (>50,000 pages), with a Jmol view that highlights functional sites and ligands. It offers an easy-to-use scene-authoring tool so you don't have to learn Jmol script language to create customized molecular scenes. Custom scenes are easily attached to "green links" in descriptive text that display those scenes in Jmol.

Communicating information about 3D structures in an intuitive manner is not a simple matter. 2D drawings can prove adequate for explaining the features of small molecules, but 2D-drawings can be confusing when dealing with larger chemicals and macromolecules with complex 3D structures such as proteins. Proteopedia is an interactive web resource that presents 3D structures in an intuitive way by linking descriptive text to 3D images, pro- viding a graphical narrative accessible to users from all levels of expertise and knowledge. In addition, Proteopedia, which is based on the ?open source? tools of MediaWiki and Jmol, allows for real-time community annotation, via easy to use authoring tools, additionally fostering an open atmosphere of information sharing and informal scientic discussion. A web browser is all that is needed to access the site and the 3D information, i.e. there are no downloadable viewers required to install and run.
