After the highly-succesful afternoon dramas Pati Ba Pintig ng Puso and Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig, GMA Network decided to move the popular love-team of Yasmien Kurdi and J.C. de Vera to primetime television. Angelika de la Cruz and dramatic actress Dina Bonnevie were casted and marked their return to the network.[4]

General filming for the series began on January 2008, Lamangan hired writer Don Michael Perez[5] to adapt the Gilda Olvidado - the two both worked in the highly rated and critically acclaimed Philippine drama Sinasamba Kita.[6] Another Lamangan regular Roy C. Iglesias, and Olvidado were hired to serve a creative consultant.

The series has been dubbed as GMA Network's "most ambitious" drama series.[7] This is mainly because for its opening sequence having 400 extras and 20 helicopters.[8][9]

Th series premiered with a modest 28.0% — considerably lower compared to the pilot episodes of other GMA Network primetime shows — against Palos' 19.5%.[10] Even though the series performed lower than expected, it is heavily praised by critics due to its cinematography, superb acting and story-telling.[11] Writer Mario E. Bautista calls the premier episode an "absorbing pilot".[12]

The series revolves around the story of Salve (Kurdi), a pretty, naïve young woman who is deprived of education by her adoptive family. She falls in love with Alfred (Agustin) and marries him. Salve strives to be an ideal wife but Alfred, an ambitious man, deceives her. Salve has yet to realize that the real reason Alfred married her was only for her inheritance. Alfred is determined to keep Salve's riches a secret and prevent her from learning his secret motive.

Alfred meets a woman whom he thinks can help him fulfill his dreams of becoming rich, popular and powerful. Via (dela Cruz) is the rich, influential daughter of a politician who falls in love with charming Alfred. They become a couple, causing much heartache for poor Salve.

Salve wants to save her marriage but Alfred and Via connive to destroy it. Salve is devastated when Alfred leaves her for his mistress. During this time, Salve meets Rod/Derek (de Vera), a hardened gangster who eventually gets attracted to her. He also meets Evita (Bonnevie), the matriarch of a gangster family and whom Rod considers as his surrogate mother. Both Evita and Rod/Derek help Salve to fight back and take revenge on the people who made her life miserable.
