Steele Canyon High School is a Charter High School located in the San Diego East County community of Spring Valley, California. Opened in 2000, it serves students in grades nine through twelve and was part of the Grossmont Union High School District until July 1, 2007. After which, it became a California Public Charter School.


History

Time line of notable Steele Canyon High School events:

  • 2000 - Steele Canyon High School opens.
  • 2002 - Steele Canyon High School begins to compete in varsity level sports. SCHS went on to win two league titles that year - boy's golf and women's tennis.
  • 2003 - The class of 2007 begins its freshman year marking the first year of operation for Steele Canyon High School where all four grade levels are present.
  • 2003 - The severity of the Cedar Fire causes Steele Canyon High School to close for a week and their first-ever planned Homecoming is cancelled.
  • 2004 - Steele Canyon High School graduates its first class.
  • 2006 - Steele Canyon High School votes to become a Charter School.
  • July 1, 2007 - Steele Canyon High School becomes a California Public Charter School
  • Oct 20-28, 2007 Steele Canyon serves as an evacuation center for San Diego residents threatened by the Harris fire which was one of the larger October 2007 California wildfires. The fire later threatens the school itself. Firefighters, with helicopter support, defend the school by using a back burning technique on the hills nearby.
  • Oct 24, 2007 - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visits Steele Canyon High School and gives a press conference addressing the California wildfires of October 2007[1]

Facilities and Faculty

Steele Canyon High School is comprised of 73 classrooms, 1 gym, 1 library, 1 staff lounge and, 5 computer labs. Of the 73 classrooms, 61 of them are reported to be connected to the internet. With over 500 computers, Steele Canyon boast a 3.9:1 student to computer ratio. Classroom class sizes contain an average 26 students. All teachers at Steele Canyon are currently fully credentialed and have an average of 7.4 years of experience teaching. [2]

Extracurricular activities

Athletics

Steele Canyon's athletic teams, the Cougars, compete in the Grossmont South League Conference and the San Diego Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). [3]

The school fields teams in 15 sports: baseball (boys), basketball, cheerleading (coed), cross country, football (boys), golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball (girls), swim and dive, tennis, track, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling (boys). [4]

Since the Fall of 2002 (the first year of varsity-level competition), SCHS has won 23 league titles and four CIF championships:
