During World War II, Operation Basalt was a British Commando raid on the German-held channel island of Sark on 4 October, 1942.

Eight Germans were killed outright; five others were killed while trying to escape with their hands bound. When the news of the killing of the prisoners reached Berlin, Hitler ordered that no British commandos were to be captured. This directive is popularly called the “Commando Order.”
