Jasoosi Dunya

Jasoosi Dunya was among the first works of Ibne Safi, started two years earlier than Imran Series. The main characters of Jasoosi Dunya are Colonel Faridi (full name: Ahmed Kamal Faridi) and Captain Hameed (full name: Sajid Hameed).

Colonel Faridi is a tall, muscular and very handsome man. He is from a noble family, son of a nawab, is very rich, living in a big mansion and drives Cadillac (in earlier novels) and Lincoln (in later novels). He works in the police only to satisfy his instinct of solving mysteries and not because to make a living out of it. He has a very strong moral character, he doesn't drink, keeps himself away from women and is very disciplined. Sometimes he bears the code name of Colonel Hard Stone given to him by his assistant Captain Hameed.

The Character of Ahmad Kamal Faridi

A Young Detective

Inspector Faridi is well-built, tall, and very good-looking. A lot of people think he is a grumpy old man but he is hardly in his thirties (30, 32 to be exact, refer to "Dilair Mujrim"). The main attraction in his face is his eyes. From the looks, he appears to be a sleepy, lazy, careless businessman (refert o "Zameen Ke Badal"). But those eyes are deceiving ... very deceiving. Behind those eyes is the most alert mind of the century. Also, there are not too many people who can talk to him while looking in his eyes. Despite of his strongly built, heavy physique, he is swift as a leopard and strong as a lion. Leonard, an infamous criminal, lost his ankles by Faridi's bare hands. Also, his art of dodging bullets is double-fold as compared to Sing Hi's "Sing Art".

Chip of an Old Block

Faridi is the only son of Nawab Azeezuddin Khan. His father is an aristocrat who is famous for his adventerous nature. Occasionally, Faridi is recognized as a copy of his father in looks and instincts. Ibn-e-Safi mentioned several of Nawab Sahab's friends who come in contact with Faridi. Not a whole lot of detail is given on the rest of Faridi's family.

Books, Snakes, and Dogs

Faridi is also unique in selecting hobbies. His major interests include reading and domesticating dogs and snakes. Science and in specific Chemistry projects is another diversion that he keeps himslef indulged in with his spare time. He seems to know several languages and is found reading books in different languages including German. Many breeds of dogs can be found in his enormous doghouse. He seems to posses some famous species of dogs like African Yellow Dingo, German Shephard, Grey Hound, Blood Hound, etc. Same approach is taken by him to pet snakes. Black Mamba and Indian Cobra are some of the more dangerous kinds that he can handle with ease due to his training with the reptile. One of the most distinguished art that he has mastered is to incapacitate snakes by jolting them, grabbing from the tale.

Faridi's Residence

Faridi lives in a lavish mansion of gigantic proportion. His residence encompasses a backyard of several acres. Many rooms including bedrooms, living room, dining room, study, library, laboratory, and servant quarters are what have been mentioned in his novels specifically. A front porch for parking and a huge garage for his cars is also part of the same residence.

Snuggly, Luxurious Automobiles

To name some of the state-of-art auto brands of their time, come to mind Cadillac, Buick, Lincoln, and Aston Martin (many still do not know about this one). In addition to his regular means of conveyance, Faridi's garage carry several vehicles for different occasions. For example, in "Jungle ki Aag", Faridi preps up a jeep with machine guns and other arms. On several occasions, he repaints one of his mini Fiats to conceal its apparent look before going on a specific mission. Faridi also owns a boat that was used once or twice to chase down criminals.

From Inspector to "Colonel"

The title "Colonel" is his honorary, much awaited title that he reluctantly accepted after he caught a very contemptible character, Gerald Shastri in "Jungle Ki Aag" (The Forest Fire). Hameed also received his "Captain" title at the same time. Faridi also possesses a "special permission" from the President to interfere in any matter that required his attention. Many of his colleagues and even senior officers envy him because of the endowments that he receives either by inheritence or by travail.

Inexhaustible Riches

Colonel Faridi's wealth is inconceivable. The reader slowly realizes that Faridi is filthy rich. And that is one aspect of his character that makes him so mystical. From owning expensive vehicles, Ibn-e-Safi eventually takes Faridi to a level that is just unprecedented - an owner of an independent state (refer to "Zahreela Admi" and "Bechara/ri").

Colonel Hardstone of the Black Force

Faridi is also the head of a secret crime-fighting organization called "Black Force". As opposed to other super heros, most of the member of his team knows who is their boss. On the other hand, members of Black Force usually hide their identity so much so that even Hameed gets irritated by it since he thinks he is the closest companion of "Father Hardstone". Black Force is also an international organization and its members are found all over the world. The members are usually recognized by code names such as B11, B2, etc.

The Character of Sajid Hameed

Mischievous & Intelligent

Hameed's character compliemts that of Faridi's. Hameed is playful, naughty, carefree, romantic, and when occasion calls for it, hardworking, brave, fearless, intelligent, and smart. Most of the time he acts like a child in front of Faridi and pretends to be a careless and messy character. Often he does things and gets into arguement with Faridi just to irritate him. But in his heart, he knows he cannot live for a second without his boss whom he loves more than his own life. In fact, his personality is like a crab, as hard from outside as it is soft from inside. He has a very strong character since it is not much easy to confront Faridi and convince him. But it is only Hameed who can do that with the ease and convinience. Often it is Hameed's mischiefs and seemingly impulsive actions that lead Faridi to the final conclusion.

Hameed's Lost Brother, Faridi !?!?!?

How Hameed met Faridi is also a very interesting encounter. Hameed tells himslef how he met Faridi in "Thandi Aag"(The Cold Fire). After he came from war, Hameed did not want to go back to his family. He saw Faridi at the airport and hugged him screaming "Bhai Jaan". His father who came to receive him had his jaw dropped in disbelief since Hameed completely refused to recognize him. Later on, after getting convinced by Faridi, Hameed went back to his family and apologized for the joke he pulled on his father.

Why He Is Who He Is?

"Thandi Aag", more importantly, explains how he became who he is. Hameed's father was a traditional man who forced him to join armed forces against his will. Eventually, Hameed was sent to war at a very young age. It was during those times when he saw such horrendous aftermath of war that he started taking comfort under the influence of alcohol. The value of life diminished in his eyes and he started to ignore the importance of life. That is the background of his carefree, somewhat irritated, and neglecting nature. After meeting Faridi, Hameed's philosophy on life changed quite a bit and he started making all readers fall in love with him.

Chhipkali - A Secret to His Success

Hameed often does things that surprise himself later on. He jumps into action without thinking much of the consequences. Ibn-e-Safi calls this condition "khopdi pe Chhipkali sawar hona" which literally means Hameed's mental apprehension by a lizard. Several of Hameed's successes are a direct result of this condition.

Qasim

Qasim's character is the comic spirit of Jasoosi Dunya Series. Where Hameed's sense of humor is more mature, Qasim's provides the counter part of it, i.e., simplistic, childish, and instantaneous humor. Readers love and hate Qasim at the same time. On one hand Qasim deserves sympathy due to the fact that he never had the freedom he needed as an adult and had a suppressed life before and after marriage. It is probably because of his suppressed upbringing that causes speech irregularities. Qasim frequently switches some Urdu alphabets while speaking. On the other hand, he seems to be cheating on his wife and appears to be so dumb on accasion that the reader feel like beating the crap out of him. But it is these mixed characteristics and spontaneity of the character that provides an extreme comic relief in Jasoosi Dunya.

Hameed met Qasim first time in "Zahreela Aadmi" which is Faridi's early days' story (although in the sequence, it is book #87). Qasim was moving a motor-cycle rider along with his motor-cyle from one place to another. The poor guys crime was that he accidentally hit Qasim. Hameed finds him very entertaining and since then they never separated.

Qasim also comes up with these wierd names for women. Since he is a huge man (seven feet tall and as fat as possible), he calls healthy women full-falooties. Skinny, light-weight, and slim females on the other hand makes him very upset and hence deserve to be called "Yalayilee" in his opinion. Qasim's hunger is unimaginable. He can finish several goat legs and whole chicken without a single burp. In s hort, Qasim's appearance is more like that of a genie of Aladin's lamp.
