The creation (c. 1988) of the Usenet newsgroup alt.sex is probably due to the Usenet Backbone cabal. Originally due and voted to be assigned rec.sex, it was the cabal's insistence that got it titled alt.sex.

At the time of this writing, alt.sex features 20 sub-groups.
