Östergötland Infantry Regiment
Ostrogothia Infantry Regiment, or Östgöta infanteriregemente is a Swedish Army infantry regiment that traces its origins back to the 16th Century. It was merged with a cavalry regiment in 1791.
History
The regiment has its origins in the fänikor raised in the 1500s. In 1619, these smaller units where organized into the Ostrogothia Grand Regiment, and in 1623, this grand regiment was spilt into three regiments, one of those being the Ostrogothia Infantry Regiment. The regiment's soldiers were conscripted from the province of Ostrogothia. It was one of the original 20 Swedish infantry regiments mentioned in the Swedish constitution of 1634.
The regiment was officially raised in 1636 although it had existed since the 1620s. The regiment's first commander was Johan Banér. Ostrogothia Infantry Regiment was tenemented in 1685. It was merged with the Ostrogothia Cavalry Regiment in 1791 to form the Life Grenadier Regiment. The unit was renamed to the Life Grenadier Regiment Rotehåll Division and had some sort of semi-independence.
