Main Page error reports

Note that the current date and time are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may not coincide with your local time zone. The next day's featured article of the day, picture of the day, and anniversaries update at midnight (00:00) according to UTC. The current time is 10:53 on November 19, 2024 (UTC). (Update)

Once an error has been fixed, the error report will be removed from this page; please check the page's history to verify that the error has been rectified and for any other comments the administrator may have made. Lengthy discussions should not take place here, and should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere.

References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error, and a suggested rewording is helpful with a stylistic complaint. The main page usually defers to supporting pages when there is disagreement, so it is best to achieve consensus and make any necessary changes there first.

  • Isn't the term scoundrel POV? I can understand thief as a person who is caught/convicted for stealing. But the term scoundrel is defined as "an unprincipled, dishonorable person; villain" by dictionary.com. How can it be proven that someone was dishonorable/unprincipled, etc? Shouldn't it be Manchester United wins the...? SpencerT♦C 00:04, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is correct either way depending on what Grammatical tense is used. You can say in 2008 Manchester United win the chamionship or Manchester United wins the championship in 2008 either would be correct ☻TheCookieMaker (talk) 00:47, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a British plural. See WP:ENGVAR and American and British English differences#Formal and notional agreement. Art LaPella (talk) 03:07, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I thought, but as an American, it sounded a bit awkward at first. Thanks, SpencerT♦C 10:57, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is this possibly a collective singular thing? Lunakeet 14:37, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it should be wins. It sounds more normal, and this is general english, not british english. -Xonybubba (talk) 19:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't explain what the UEFA Champions League actually is, perhaps it should say Association Football tournament? -62.172.143.205 (talk) 16:59, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That could be a good idea, but I have a feeling the posting admin left that out on purpose so as not to anger anyone who would rather have see [association football/football/soccer]. Random89 18:45, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Man Utd are a team, they won collectively, therefore in this context the name is a plural. The correct usage is 'plural win' and 'singular wins' eg. 'Tiger Woods wins the US Open', 'The Rolling Stones win the Eurovision Song Contest'. Therefore, 'Manchester United win' is the correct form. As for including the sport, well it would run into the whole 'football' debate. It already has UEFA in the blurb, and clicking on any of the links would quickly make it obvious, so it's probably OK.
