Shooting at the 2004 Summer Olympics

Shooting at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place at the Markópoulo Olympic Shooting Centre where 390 competitors contested 17 gold medals. This is situated in the city of Markópoulo, in the east of the Attica region in Greece.

Russia's Mikhail Nestruev set a new Olympic record with 591 points in the qualification round, but still only had a one-point lead over Chinese veteran Wang Yifu. This would prove not to be enough.

In the last Olympic competition in running target before it was taken off the program, Manfred Kurzer set a new World record with 590 in the qualification round and though he did not perform a perfect final, he was never threatened.

Ralf Schumann has dominated this event since the late 1980s, and won the Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996, but failed to achieve his historic third gold in Sydney. In Athens, Schumann reached 592 in the qualification round along with two Russians, and the German's excellent final shooting was unstoppable.

China's Zhanbo Jia won the gold medal with 1,264.5 points. U.S. Army Major Anti, a marksman in the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, took the silver medal with 1,263.1 points. Austria's Christian Planer claimed the bronze medal with a 1,262.8 total.

The first gold medal went to China and Du Li after a new Olympic record.

The women's air pistol competition was extremely close. Olena Kostevych (Ukraine) qualified as 8th and last competitor to the final, and started out three points behind leading Jasna Sekaric (Serbia and Montenegro), but managed to eliminate the gap. After forty qualification shots and ten final shots, an eleventh was required to break the tie – Kostevych won this by 10.2 to 9.4.
