Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Southern California. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page. • JesseW 1 July 2005 19:07 (UTC) - I've worked on starting a few LA neighborhood articles, and some category cleanup - that would be one really good thing to improve, the categorization for So Cal articles.
  • Willmcw July 1, 2005 20:49 (UTC).
  • Catherine\talk 5 July 2005 00:18 (UTC)
  • Antandrus (talk) 6 July 2005 03:24 (UTC) -- I've written a lot of articles on places in Santa Barbara County, and a few in San Luis Obispo County as well (that one's sort of borderline I suppose, but it is on the map ...)
  • Zzyzx11 (Talk) 7 July 2005 03:50 (UTC) - will occasionally help with it
  • --fpo 13:19, July 26, 2005 (UTC) - I've done (and will continue with) famed golf courses in the area, and more stuff.
  • Stevey7788 - will occasionally help with L.A. neighborhoods, cities, and freeways
  • theshibboleth - I'm going to try to upload photos of the LA area.
  • Lan56 I'd love to help out. I can occasionally add some photos, too. --Lan56 02:56, August 22, 2005 (UTC)

Goals and projects

Goals

Please see the talk page for more discussion of the goals for the SoCal WikiProject.
  1. Make sure that every Southern California county and city article meets Wikipedia guidelines
  2. Add at least one quality picture for:
    1. every Southern California city and community
    2. every State Park in SoCal
    3. every County Park in SoCal
    4. every major landmark in SoCal
  3. Improve and enlarge every stub article on SoCal topics
  4. Create new articles on SoCal topics to eliminate any red links in SoCal articles
  5. Improve major articles related to Southern California so that they can be first taken to Peer review, then nominated as a Featured article candidate, and finally featured as a Featured article.

Projects

  1. 1992 Los Angeles riots#Fifth day (Sunday, May 3) This empty section serves as a vandal magnet and needs to be filled in.
  2. Category cleanup (Priority project?)
  3. Photography projects:
    1. The old photo project:
    2. Then and now photo project:
For many of the old (pre-1923) photos, it would be nice to also have a more recent picture showing the changes over the years.
    3. Photography "expeditions":
There are several areas and corridors in Southern California that are rich with targets for potential photos for Wikipedia articles. Especially with some careful planning, a half-day or one-day photo expedition for each area could help provide numerous photos for the wikipedia. For example, a casual trip down Sunset Blvd. will provide numerous photo opportunities, but by careful planning you can also catch many sights that are just off of, or not easily seen from Sunset Blvd (such as the old Charlie Chaplin Studio/A&M Recording Studios lot at Sunset and La Brea that is now home to Jim Henson Productions). Some potential photo expeditions would include:
      1. Sunset Blvd. (probably a minimum of two days to catch everything)
      2. Hollywood Blvd.
      3. Wilshire Blvd.
      4. Griffith Park
      5. Downtown Los Angeles/Chinatown/Little Tokyo
      6. Long Beach/Port of Long Beach/Port of Los Angeles/San Pedro/Palos Verdes Peninsula
      7. Pasadena/San Marino art museums and educational institutions
      8. Buena Park/Anaheim tourist attractions
      9. Huntington Beach/Newport Beach coastline
  1. San Diego County cities and neighborhoods renaming project
The standard naming convention for places is [place, state] cities and unincorporated areas, and [district, city, state] for neighborhoods. Many articles places in this county (and especially city neighborhoods) have improperly formed names, like San Ysidro, Mission Beach, California, or Carmel Valley. See:
    1. Cities and towns in San Diego County
    2. San Diego neighborhoods
  2. Create Merged-Consolidation articles for landmarks:
Many of the SoCal city and community articles, as well as articles such as Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard, have long lists of landmarks that are either red links or links to stubs that will probably not grow much larger. It would be much better to create some consolidation articles such as Landmarks of Sunset Boulevard that would have brief descriptions of all of the landmarks with links to the much smaller number of landmarks that deserve full-fledged articles.
  3. Peer review-->Featured article candidates-->featured articles
    1. Find at least one city or community article that is ready, or close to being ready for Peer review with the goal of turning it into a featured article.
      1. Suggestions: ???
    2. Find at least one regular SoCal article that is ready, or close to being ready for Peer review with the goal of turning it into a featured article.
      1. California Polytechnic State University
      2. Pan-Pacific Auditorium
      3. Bradbury Building
      4. Suggestions: ???
  1. Stubs:
    1. Many of the stub articles in Category:California-related stubs are actually geo-stubs, so they should be moved to Category:California geography stubs
    2. Category:California geography stubs is large enough that it should probably be subdivided into Northern and Southern California geo-stubs
  2. Lists of important topics
There are numerous lists, both on the Wikipedia, and from external sources, that can be used as guides as to what should be covered
    1. National Trust for Historic Preservation's Most Endangered Places - California
      1. National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preservation Atlas - find all - centered on Los Angeles, California
    2. National Register of Historic Places#California official NRHP website]
      1. National historic landmark#California (130)

Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

New Wikipedia articles on SoCal topics

Please feel free to list your new Southern California-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Main Wikipedia page. DYN has a 72 hr. time limit from the creation of the article.
