Question and a little advice

Hi there! I know that you are the person in charge of offloading pages on WikiProject Astronomical objects (or something like that), and I would like to ask if you would be kind enough to let me know on my talk page about anymore unwatched asteroid articles that you find in the process. Thanks.

My advice to you is this: I would like to recommend that you get MiszaBotIII to automatically archive this page for you. As an administrator, you will get a lot more traffic to this page, so I believe that it might be in your best interest to eliminate the hassle of manually archiving your talk page. I am not forcing you to do this. I just think that it might be a good choice.

Cheers, Razorflame 01:41, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To the first, I will. To the second, I tried, but I may have misconfigured it - and I shan't count my chickens before 15:00 on Tuesday, but thank you for the vote of confidence! Fritzpoll (talk) 15:44, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Would you like me to configure it for you? Cheers, Razorflame 16:07, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you can see how to fix what I've attempted, I would be very grateful! Fritzpoll (talk) 16:09, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that the problem with the automatic archiving of your talk page was set to too long of an archive cycle (14 days), so I changed it to a shorter archive cycle (2 days). Feel free to change it to a bit longer archive cycle if you want, but I wouldn't recommend a longer archive cycle than, maybe, 5 days. Cheers, Razorflame 16:16, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! I owe you one. Fritzpoll (talk) 16:25, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem! Let me know if MiszaBotIII automatically archives it for you now! Cheers, Razorflame 18:02, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sheesh I probably get as much traffic on my talk page as anybody and I haven't a bot to archive it for me!

User:Ganeshk has provided be with an entire list of Indian settlements

User:Ganeshbot had already created the towns from Census 2001. User:Sumibot created some of the villages in Andhra Pradesh, but most of the places all over are missing.

What I would do is bypass India for now as it may become possible that a different bot can be set up to add all of the INdian towns and villages.

User:Sumibot created tehsils which are administrative divisions. Perhaps we could arrange that this bot can do India ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:34, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Skipping India takes a few hours off the job at any rate. I'm not editing much today, as I have to run errands, but was just popping by to check on things. MBisanz appears to think the bot can now create pages, but I don't have sufficient trial edits to proceed without risking being blocked for an unapproved bot run. Unfortunately, no BAG member is going near the request for approval at the moment, and I don't want to harrass them unnecessarily in case they are busy Fritzpoll (talk) 09:37, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your're not having second thoughts are you? I would have thought that if Bisanz says its OK to create a few that that should be sufficient a reason enough not to be blocked for any activity. I'm rather surprised that BAG has not done anything yet, but I guess we'll have to be patient ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:51, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No second thoughts here! I just want to make sure everything is a-ok. Do we have a completed page yet? Fritzpoll (talk) 10:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tis OK. No. First of all I am going through the category of 188 places and adding an infobox manually. Once this is done I will begin to check each page with dabbing. I got rhough about 3/4 of the first page the other day but when I have finished adding maps to existing settlements I will start doing this. Also make a note to change the px size of the map in the infobox for Afghanistan to 300px.

just add this underneath where it says pushpin map: pushpin_mapsize=300

It makes the map look fuller I think. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll fiddle with the template and check. There's no rush for the dabbing - I was just thinking that if Bahrain was done (which has less than 100 articles to create), I could attempt to upload these to article space - I think the spirit of the BAG trial was to create 100 articles, but I'd rather not do partial coverage of a country, as this can cause problems later. Of course, I can do the first 100 in Afghanistan, if they happen to be nearing completion - on reflection, given that the bot skips created articles, this probably wouldn't be too much of a problem! Fritzpoll (talk) 10:27, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Its hard going through all of these places and adding an infobox. I've nearly reached M. I've just thought of something. If we are going to be creating thousands of stub articles for many countries it may be best to sort out new stub categories first. E.g rather than Afghanistan-geo-stub Herat-geo-stub etc. Usually 60 is the threshold but eventually there will be 1100 for afghanistan alone. Could you contact User:Alai and inform him of the bot plans and see whether he would consider reorganizing the stub sorting in advance. Thanks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:23, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What pages are you going through? Fritzpoll (talk) 11:42, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the dude putting infoboxes and maps in every article Category:Cities, towns and villages in Afghanistan. I've now reached N. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:25, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BRFA for Fritz

This should help [1] MBisanz talk 21:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's great - thanks very much; I'll run the trial as soon as the checks for 100 articles are complete. Fritzpoll (talk) 21:15, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shall I make sure the first 100 of afghanistan are all clear? When do you intend doing the trial? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:34, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, pretty much as soon as you give me the go-ahead that the first 100 articles in Afghanistan are clear, and can confirm the categories listed in my userspace are correct. That said, if you do it right now, I won't actually run the bot until this evening as I'm presently at work on my 20 minute lunch break! :) Fritzpoll (talk) 11:37, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You should be clear to do the first province. I'll try to get all of the existing pages with a infbox and clear the whole of the first page by this evening. Admittedly I'm not feeling all like wikiying today but I'll be certain to keep my word ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:07, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The first province will be plenty - do what you want to do; don't feel obliged to do this! As you said to me a few days ago, you don't need all of this done in one day! Fritzpoll (talk) 12:08, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Baldy. Stressed? Not me sire. Gladly I've finished adding infoboxes to all the existing Afghan articles which I could. Perhaps some day you could devise a bot to do it for me as its hard and monotonous work!!! ANy idea what time you are doing the run, as I'm off here for a few hours in a few minutes ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:27, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HI Fritz. I was wondering if you could tell if it is possible to generate red linked links for each province/district so I can copy and paste them straight into templates like Template:Chipwi Township etc. E.g the list of links but without any of the other details seperated by commas so they can be put into the templates? Of course this can be done after they are started but I need to start to think about draiwing up the bones for the templates by country too ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:16, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Afghanistan/Provincial templates.

Ugh that mop and bucket really makes the look uninviting doesn't it!! Surely Mr. Fritz would rather think of it as a position of class rather than that of a toilet cleaner!!! I'll be looking forward to the bot in action. I've started Category:WikiProject provincial templates by country so that the templates for eahc country can also be laid out. I'll link this on the missing places page. Whether this is done afterwards or not we'll still need to link articles together with district/provincial templates ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:28, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion please...

Hi!

I saw your comment.

Your opinion please. One of the tagger's original choices were to place a query on the article's talk page, or to place a {{notability}} tag, or to use a {{prod}}.

Forgive me, but it seems to me that given the wikipedia's stated goal to reach decisions through consensus, escalations to {{afd}} can be provocative, and disruptive.

Am I missing something? Lots of people are developing their little essays. I see the nominator has one. I have one too. nothing is obvious. Personally, I really think the nominator should have tried to initiate a dialogue over their concern, not initiate an {{afd}}, which can be extremely unpleasant, particularly when they resemble a lynch mob, with no one really trying to understand the points those who disagree with them are trying to make.

What I have found it that, while the wikipedia has the stated goal of building a culture of tolerance and good faith the deletion fora have, in effect, bred a subculture of intolerance -- where violations of WP:NPA, WP:CIV, WP:BITE and WP:AGF have become so routine they pass without notice.

So, am I missing something?

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 22:19, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, in general, with your points. AfD can be frustrating, and the only reason I mentioned it at all was to point out that there was no point in re-requesting a speedy delete, or a prod, since you had contested deletion. The nominator did not have to request an AfD, nor did I instruct him to do so. I don't really see, in this particular instance, any violations of the latter policies that you refer to. I do, however, follow the sentiment that the nominator does not appear to have taken much time to seek out sources on the topic. I may, however, be incorrect in this assertion Fritzpoll (talk) 22:24, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you have a look

User:9Nak has moved moved YOLANDE DE LUSIGNAN to Yolande de Lusignan and appears to have got rid of the good article and replaced it with a bad one, not sure what the procedure is thanks. BigDuncTalk 11:58, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've had a look. The move of the article seems to fit in line with the guidelines on article titles - all caps isn't appropriate in this case. As for the content, I can't see anywhere where this user has changed the content originally on the page. Subsequent editors have made additions, however. If you have a more specific problem that I've missed, please let me know, but I think that everything is ok. If you have content issues, try raising them with the user on the article talkpage. Best wishes Fritzpoll (talk) 12:02, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article was created by User:Jeanne boleyn when there was already an article of the same name she created it with the title in capitals and it was moved but it got rid of what was on the original article before the move and now more content has been added. I sppoted it on new page patrol but on a quick look of the original it seemed more wikified and established if you understand what I am trying to say thanks. BigDuncTalk 12:10, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, are you saying that this page is the same as the page Yolanda of Lusignan (different spelling)? If so, we can fix that with redirects. Fritzpoll (talk) 12:26, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thats it never spotted the spelling. BigDuncTalk 12:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New categories

I decided it might be tidier to split by province after all see Category:Cities, towns and villages in Afghanistan. Somebody will have to recategorize the main contents by province using AWB or something. They should now only go in one category e.g Category:Cities, towns and villages in Badakhshan Province ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:05, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. All I need to know is what categories to use, and that can be done. A fix to the existing articles would be a short bot job - presumably all the new categories already exist? I guess I could get the bot to check for this as well, and create the category if necessary. Fritzpoll (talk) 22:13, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I created the new categories ready but they've hit the cfd at here . Perhaps you could give some input. Duplicate categories were unintentional and some of the names variate. Could you participate thanks as I set them up after the discussion and if they are filled they shouldn't be deleted ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:38, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would participate, but I don't really understand what's going on. The category issue is not something I feel strongly about. Provided I know in advance where settlements from each province are meant to go, it doesn't affect the bot operation. All that seems to be going on here is a minor dispute over spellings. Maybe I've missed something? Fritzpoll (talk) 11:18, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yolande De Lusignan

Thanks for allerting me to the fact that an article existed on her. I made the mistake of typing in her French name which was why nothing came up. Anyway, I have expanded the stub into an article. I hope it looks ok. Next time, I'll check for Anglicised versions of a name before I commence writing an article. Thank you again for your help. Please let me know if the article looks ok. Hola

Hello Mr. Fritzpoll. I've dabbed the first Afghan page. At present though I don't knoe what to do with titles which have the same name in the same province so I've left it at the top. What I'd suggest doing is creating one page of all the places which have dab problems and then later we can work out how to dab them accordingly. Agreed? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:23, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed - anything which will be confusing if the bot creates them should be removed from this page, and placed on a new one. We need such a page for creation errors anyway. How about /Places/afghanistan/Problem Pages ? Did you see my comment about about the CfD? Well done for all the hard work you're doing on this. I've tagged the approval page to try to get a response to the end of the trial - hopefully this will rouse someone Fritzpoll (talk) 11:26, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds great. Excellent news! I would however suggest putting all the problems on one page for all places-there shouldn't be too many places. The horrid one seems to be Baluch for Afghanistan! There seems to be a convention that the spelling for Bamian province is Bamyan. Perhaps you could note this. There are also severla different spellings of existing provinces names which differ from maplandia spelling such as Ghazni Province rather than Ghazn, Ghor Province rather than Ghowr etc. This will have to be cleared up first . Oh believe me I'd rather progress quickly with this, I'll be glad when Afghanistan is out of the way!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:35, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First of all we need to recategorize the articles in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Afghanistan into the provincial categories. Is it possible to use a bot or AWB to do this? E.g articles in Category:Badakhshan Province need placing in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Badakhshan Province. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:48, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Post to Bot requests, there always seems to be someone willing to do these. Fritzpoll (talk) 11:52, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c)Well, these are fairly easy fixes. If we wanted to change "Bamian" to "Bamyan", we simply "edit this page" for the page it's on, copy the text into Notepad (if we use Windows, as I do), Edit....Replace, do it for all occurrences, and then copy the new text back as the article. A 5 minute job. That's the joy of these lists - so easy to correct minor errors :) All we need is consensus on the names. Tonight, I may well begin more uploading - I will probably finish Cambodia manually, but I will skip over China for the moment and proceed with other countries to get as big a lead on the editing as I can. Once we've signed off on given pages, I'll run the article-creation element of the bot.
I do think you're going to need more help though - my time will largely be occupied with the bot, as I have to make very minor adjustments for each country. I suggest posting to the geography projects, maybe the community noticeboard, etc. to drum up volunteers. Maybe even drop off a Wikiproject: Missing encyclopedic articles tip off to Signpost? The more hands, the faster it will go.
Centralise discussion about categories on the bot's talk page, as well as other issues with the article creation. Ummm...can't think of anything else. Thoughts? Fritzpoll (talk) 11:52, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Could you take care of notifying those that you suggested. I'll also let as many people I know as possible and request that they help with dabbing. Hopefully people in recognizing that wikipedia could double in article size wil be prompted into action but I have doubts on how many people will actually help me out ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:55, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think Editorofthewiki will once he gets back from a wikibreak. A couple of other users seemed to be helping, but now aren't...curious. I'll notify the projects once I have a few more countries listed, otherwise it looks daft. Perhaps I will add in all the redlinks of countries yet to be uploaded to show the scale of what we are doing... we just need enough eyes to check things like the province spelling. If you let me know what corrections needs making, I'll happily do them myself. Fritzpoll (talk) 11:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I've cross posted to a number of people who may help. COuld you bot drill members of the WP:Disambiguation project. There are over a 100 members and it would take ages manually ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:30, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Afraid not, since that is not an approved task of the bot. I will, however, make a start on it manually later on today if you like. Maybe dropping a note on their project talk page will be enough? Fritzpoll (talk) 12:32, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah OK I'll post them this evening. I'll get dabbing now. It really shouldn't take that long.. hopefully I can get Afghanistan checked today and sooner or later. you'll probably want to upload some more in a few days as Bangladesh gest checked ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:35, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
