The Battle of Antietam, fought on Wednesday, September 17, 1862, was the first major battle of the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with over 20,000 soldiers killed or wounded.

It was known in the South as the Battle of Sharpsburg.
