January
- January 29 - Face to Face announced on their official website that they would be reuniting for select shows in the US and internationally.[1]
- Rage Against the Machine headlined the Big Day Out festivals in Australia and New Zealand, their first shows outside of the United States since reforming, and their first Australian shows in 12 years.[2]
- Pop singer Britney Spears was hospitalized after reportedly going without sleep for five days. She was placed under a 5150 Involuntary psychiatric hold at the UCLA Medical Center in California, USA.[3] A restraining order would later be issued against her friend Sam Lutfi after Spears' mother Lynne accused him of drugging her daughter.[4]

- February 10 - The 50th Grammy Awards took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, USA.
- February 15 - The Irish National Music Awards were held in Dublin, Ireland.
- February 19 - System of a Down guitarist, Daron Malakian, told MTV.com that the band were never likely to reform as he would be concentrating on his new band project Scars on Broadway.[5]
- February 20 - The 28th BRIT Awards were held in London, UK.
- February 20-February 25 - The annual Viña del Mar International Song Festival was held in Chile. It was headlined by Nelly Furtado, Calle 13 and Wisin & Yandel.[6]
- February 23 to March 3 - The second annual Soundwave Festival was held in Australia, headlined by The Offspring and Incubus.[7]

- March 2 - Marilyn Manson's world tour, Rape of the World, came to an end in Houston, Texas, USA.[citation needed]
- March 7 - The Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2008 took place in Jakarta, Indonesia.[8]
- March 7-16 - The 2008 South By Southwest Conference and Festivals were held in Austin, Texas, USA.[9]
- March 11 - Jazz musician and broadcaster Humphrey Lyttelton announced his retirement from presenting BBC Radio 2's jazz programme after forty years.[citation needed]
- March 20 - The Eagles began a tour to support their album, Long Road Out of Eden.[citation needed]
- March 25-29 - The Miami Winter Music Conference was held in Miami Beach Resort & Spa, Miami, Florida, USA.[10]
- March 26 - Guitarist Clint Lowery rejoined the band Sevendust, replacing Sonny Mayo.[citation needed]

- British singer Leona Lewis topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with her debut single "Bleeding Love", the first solo British female singer to do so since Kim Wilde in 1987.[citation needed]
- Rock band Def Leppard began the first leg of their world tour in support of their album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.[citation needed]

- April 1 - Scott Weiland's departure from rock band Velvet Revolver became official.[11] Weiland's reunion with his former band, Stone Temple Pilots, and tensions between Weiland and the rest of Velvet Revolver, led to his departure.[citation needed]

- Mariah Carey's new single, "Touch My Body", from her album E=MC², is officially confirmed as her eighteenth number-one single in the United States making her the artist with the second most number-one hit singles in history, behind the Beatles with 20.[citation needed]
- April 5 - The reunited Face to Face performed together for the first time in four-and-a-half-years at The Bamboozle Left in Irvine, California, USA.[1]
- April 7 - The newly reunited 90s rock band Stone Temple Pilots held a press conference announcing a 65-date reunion tour and play for the first time since 2002 at a small, private show in Los Angeles.
- April 15 - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa officially proclaimed April 15 as Mariah Carey Day in Los Angeles, California, USA.[12]
- April 17 - Leona Lewis's album, Spirit, reached number one on the Billboard 200, selling around 205,000 copies in its first week on sale.[citation needed] Lewis became the first British woman to go straight to the top the album charts with a debut album.[citation needed]
- April 19 - With her single, "I'm a Fire", Donna Summer became the first artist to have a song reach number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in every decade since the chart's inception in 1974.[citation needed]

- The Empire State Building in New York City, USA was lit up in Mariah Carey's motif colors — lavender, pink, and white — in celebration of her achievements in the world of music. Carey was the first person in history to be honored by this event.[13]
- The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was held in Indio, California, USA. It included performances by Aphex Twin, Prince, Portishead, and Roger Waters.[citation needed]
- April 26 - The MTV Australia Awards 2008 took place in Sydney, Australia.[citation needed]

- May 3 - Girls Aloud began their Tangled Up Tour.
- May 3-4 - The sixth annual The Bamboozle was held at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA.
- May 8 - Madonna announced that her 7th world tour, the Sticky and Sweet Tour, will begin in Cardiff, Wales on August 23.
- May 10-11 - The Give It A Name 2008 festival was held at Earls Court, London, UK.[14]
- May 16 - The Offspring began the first leg of their tour in support of their new album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace.
- May 17 - The sixteenth annual KROQ Weenie Roast was held at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California, USA. Featured bands included Metallica, The Offspring, The Raconteurs, Rise Against, Bad Religion, Pennywise, The Bravery, Scars on Broadway, Seether, Flogging Molly, Atreyu, MGMT, Flobots, and Ludo.
- May 21 - David Cook won season 7 of the American television talent contest, American Idol.
- May 24 – The 53rd Eurovision Song Contest final was held in Belgrade, Serbia. 43 countries competed in the event, including newcomers San Marino and Azerbaijan.[15]

- June 12 - 15 - The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival will be held in Manchester, Tennessee, USA. - June 17 - George Michael will begin the American leg of his 25 Live tour in San Diego, California, USA. This will be his first U.S. tour for 17 years.[citation needed]

- June 27 - 29 - The Glastonbury Festival will take place in Worth Farm, Somerset, UK.[citation needed]

- July 3 - 6 - The Rothbury Music Festival will be held in Rothbury, Michigan. Headlining acts include Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, John Mayer, 311, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Primus.
- T in The Park (Scotland) - UK festival held over weekend in July.
- July 4 - 6 - next 3-day edition of Heineken Open'er Festival in Gdynia, Poland. Ticket sale started on the 1st of October 2007. The announced artists to perform in this edition of festival are The Chemical Brothers, M.I.A., Gentleman, Massive Attack, CocoRosie, Sex Pistols, The Raconteurs, Goldfrapp, The Cribs, Jay-Z, Interpol, Erykah Badu, Fischerspooner, DJ Vadim, Fujiya & Miyagi, Róisín Murphy, DeVotchKa and Editors. Beirut cancelled their show.
- July 10 - 13 - EXIT Festival 08 is to be held on Petrovaradin Fortress, in Novi Sad, Serbia.

- July 23 - 26 - The 10,000 Lakes Festival will be held in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
- July 31 to August 2 - The reunited Carcass will play at the German heavy metal festival Wacken Open Air.[17] This will be their first live performance since their original break up in 1995.

- August 8-10 - third edition of Off Festival in Mysłowice, Poland. The announced artists to perform in this edition of festival are Of Montreal, Clinic, British Sea Power, James Chance & The Contortions, Renton, Muchy, Caribou, Motion Trio and Waglewski Fisz Emade.
