The Independence/Democracy Group in the European Parliament was set up on 20 July 2004.[1] IND/DEM is opposed to centralisation and is composed of MEPs who support greater transparency and control over the EU bureaucracy, and MEPs (notably UKIP) who advocate withdrawal from the EU.[2][1]

The group's leaders are Nigel Farage (UKIP) and Kathy Sinnott, who replaced long-time MEP Jens-Peter Bonde (June Movement) in May 2008.

Formation

The 2004 European Parliament elections were reported as the best results for Eurosceptic parties to that date.[3] 37 MEPs from UKIP (UK), Junibevægelsen (Denmark), Mouvement pour la France (France), Lega Nord (Italy), ChristenUnie-SGP (Netherlands), LAOS (Greece), Junilistan (Sweden), Nezávislí (Czech Republic), the League of Polish Families (Poland) and an Independent from Ireland, joined together to form the Eurosceptic group called "Independence/Democracy", succeeding the group called "Europe of Democracies and Diversities" that had existed before the elections.

Members

The IND/DEM Group comprises 23 Members coming from 9 different countries, as follows.
