Malout ( ਮਲੋਟ )is a city and a municipal council in Muktsar district in the Indian state of Punjab.

Located in southern punjab, it is a prominent town of cotton belt where production per unit area is one of the highest in nation.

Malout is a well known city of Punjab established on National highway 10 with 4 lane road, which is the proud of city. This highway connects the New Delhi to Fazilka through the city. This town is at the border o three states (Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan) and two countries (India and Pakistan). The boundary of Haryana and Rajasthan is just 30 and 65 Km’s from Malout. On the other hand it is just 45 Km’s from Pakistan. Due to this reason this area is highly active in emergency time due to military actions.

Malout city is 4-5 century old, History behind the name of Malout city has many Opinion but most famous are as follow:

1st opinion people of Maan cast found here Kacha Kot (fort). So this city name

popular as Mankot Nagar. Hence with the passage of time people stated calling this city as Manout and after this Malout.

2nd opinion there was a popular wrestler (MALL) who was very helpful to people so

the name of this city kept Maal-di-out then Malout.

3rd Option which is pretty famous is that in older times British set up there base

here to import and export stuff, which Indian call normally as Mal, to Karachi (now in Pakistan). At that tie this city was very famous as Mal out centre, so people started calling this city as Malout.

In 1917 British government established Bathinda - Karachi Railway line, to

mobilize the goods from this part India to Karachi. Being on the way Malout Railway Station was established in 1918 so that this station can be used as a base point for this particular

area. Choudhry Harji Ram of Malout village, one of the richest persons of the time,

established a new town near the railway station at west side ,which was called as Mandi Harji

Raam (Mandi is a word used small town in Punjab, India).

With the growth of the area due to trading established by railways network the other rich people started thinking to establish there business base in Malout near railway station. But Choudhry Harji Ram refused then to provide then land in his area, this is how the new Malout establishment came into existence on 19th march 1920. Under the leadership of Seth Thakur Das the near villages and town rich people normally traders established another small town opposite to the old town. A seven member committee purchased land of 100 Begha’s of Shekhu villages with the cost of 1 lac 40 thousand 163 Rs and 38 paisa, which is then divided into planned and modernized way into shopping and residential area.

In 17 November 1921 the DC of Ferozpur District Mr. JC Koldsitrimiu established large water storage and purification tank system in the town. This was the same day when British prince Vali – Ehmad - Edward came to this part of the India for survey, just to give him respect this new establishment was named on his name called as “Edward Ganj Malout Mandi”

With the Passage of time this small town started growing and by the end of 1940 a Post office, Telephone exchange, Guest house, Rest House, graveyard Shamshan Bhumi were estd. Due to high cotton cultivation many cotton factories and agriculture Instruments industries came into existence in the city and near village area and hence this area was recognised as the cotton capital of India. Just to give more organised form to the association it was rename from Edward Ganj Company to Edward Ganj Public Welfare association in 1942.

There is wide seasonal temperature variation in Malout area, in summers the temperature goes as high up as 48-50 0C and in winters its goes as low as 1-20C. The Western Himalayas in the North and the Thar Desert in the South and Southwest mainly determine the climate conditions. The South -western monsoon brings the much needed rain bearing depression during summer (July to September). Nearly 70 % of rainfall is during these three. The major part of the district qualifies for aridic (tropic) moisture regime according to the criteria laid in Soil Taxonomy. Soil moisture regime computations employing the Newhall mathematical model indicate that the area has 'weak aridic' moisture regime (Van Wambeke, 1985). In the aridic (torric) moisture regime, the moisture control section in the most of the year is dry in all parts for more than half the time (cumulative).
