Some thought it was strange that in the midst of a floundering if not drowning economy, wardrumming, questions about the legitimacy of the Bush presidency, the 9-11 attacks and the strategic vs the tactical responses to same, and other niggling bits of reality, that American Idol was taking up so much "reality-TV" time. American Idle became its nickname amongst those who felt it comparable to the Romans' bread and circuses.
