William Henry Demps, Jr. (born November 7 1979 in Charleston, South Carolina) is an American football safety for the Houston Texans of the National Football League. He was originally signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent after going undrafted in the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football of San Diego State.
Demps has also played for the New York Giants in his career. He is the older brother of former NFL safety Marcus Demps, who was a member of the Detroit Lions practice squad in 2006.
College career
The former walk-on who was a 2-year starter at San Diego State University. Two-time All-Mountain West First-team selection. Recorded 229 career tackles (135 solo), including 15 tackles for loss, five interceptions.
Freshman (1998)
Demps played primarily on special teams as a red-shirt freshman. He majored in Information Decision System
Sophomore (1999)
Posted 40 tackles (25 solo) and one interception as a sophomore. Recorded first career interception and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown against Wyoming. Also had five tackles, including one tackle for loss against the Cowboys.
Junior (2000)
Demps started all 11 games at strong safety as a junior. He earned 1st-team All-Mountain West honors. Finished second on team and sixth in Mountain West with 97 tackles (51 solo). Also had two interceptions. Demps also led the team with 15 tackles for loss. He opened season with 15 tackles (10 solo), including three tackles for loss.
Senior (2001)
Demps started all 11 games at strong safety as a senior. Earning a second consecutive First-team All-Mountain West honors. He posted 92 tackles, including a career-high 59 solo. Also two interceptions.
Professional career
2002
Demps went undrafted in the 2002 NFL Draft, but was signed by the Baltimore Ravens where he played from 2002 to 2005.
Played in 14 games, starting 10 after making the Ravens roster as a rookie free agent. He recorded 64 tackles (51 solo), one sack, one forced fumble, including a game-saving interception vs. Jacksonville. He also posted six special teams tackles.
2003
In 2003, Demps saw action in all 16 regular season games with nine starts for Ravens. Recorded 59 total tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble. He made his first career post-season start in Baltimore's Wild Card loss to Tennessee.
2004
In 2004, Demps started all 16 games for the 1st time in his career, tying for 6th on the team (Gary Baxter) with 86 tackles, including 72 solo. He also recorded 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception on the season also notched career highs with 15 tackles, including 14 solo against the Bengals.
2005
In 2005, Demps started in all 11 games in which he played at free safety for Baltimore before tearing his ACL and being placed on injured reserve on December 2, 2005. Tallied 70 tackles, and two fumble recoveries, plus seven special teams tackles. Started and had two solo tackles and a special teams tackle before leaving the game in the 2nd quarter with a torn ACL at Cincinnati.
2006
Demps was signed by the New York Giants in the offseason. He started all 16 games for the Giants in 2006.
2007
Will Demps was signed by the Houston Texans on September 11, 2007. He played in 15 games, starting the last 7 games of the season. He was named an AFC Pro Bowl alternate.
Personal
He is the older brother of Marcus Demps. He went to Highland High School, located in Palmdale, California and occasionally works as a model in his spare time. He made an appearance in ex-Destiny's Child, Letoya Luckett's first solo video "Torn".
His father is African-American and his mother is Korean. Demps lived in San Diego Bay and his home was featured in on the MTV show Cribs[1]; however, since being picked up by the New York Giants he now owns a home in northern New Jersey. Demps can speak conversationally in Korean. As a child he also lived on Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California.
Off the field
- Demps has participated in several Gatorade Jr. Training Camps, which helped teach football fundamentals to boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14.[2]
- He visited sick children at the University of Maryland Medicine’s Children’s Hospital and also provided a financial donation to the hospital.[2]
- He, along with Terry Jones, served as a coach for KIPPS at the Greenspring Middle School basketball fundraiser in May 2003.[2]
- Will, along with other Ravens players worked with the students in the Fresh Start program, assisting with various carpentry activities in the Living Classrooms program. Students produced a line of outdoor furniture, boats and custom projects.[2]
- They also helped students focus on developing professional and interpersonal skills to help them in their careers and other future endeavors.[2]
- He donated a pool table to the Scotts Branch Police Athletic League in June 2004. Stayed afterwards to shoot a game with PAL members.[2]
- He spoke to selected students at the Crossroads Middle School and worked with participants in the Fresh Start and Project S.E.R.V.E. programs.[2]
- In November 2004, he participated in the Ravens Football 101 program for defense, teaching fundamental football skills to over 300 women.[2]
- Demps appeared at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society U.G.L.Y. Ball in November 2004 to salute restaurants for raising funds for the disease.[2]
- Along with teammates Dave Zastudil, Daniel Wilcox and Darnell Dinkins, Demps spoke to 200 young men at Long Reach High School for a Ravens R.I.S.E. Assembly in December 2004.[2]
- He participated in several youth football clinics at Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, Florida and at the 2005 Pro Bowl.[2]
- He posed with rescued animals for the Friends of the Baltimore Animal Shelter (FOBAS) 2006 calendar in July 2005.[2]
- He joined Todd Heap in the Countdown to Kindergarten program, promoting school readiness and stressing the importance of early childhood experiences.[2]
- In December 2005, he visited Living Classrooms and spoke to Crossroads Middle School students and participants in the Fresh Start program.[2]
- He was a guest speaker about life in the NFL with Mark Clayton in a lecture series at Towson University in November 2005.[2]
- He hosted 50 Baltimore youth to the Catonsville Wal-Mart, and served as a personal shopper to the children who received $100 gift certificates, courtesy of himself and Wal-Mart.[2]
