Monterey Highlands School is one of the top-performing elementary schools in the Alhambra Unified School District. The API score for 2006 grew thirty four points from 817 to 851, giving Highlands the third-highest API score, behind Ynez and Brightwood elementary schools.

Student Body
Monterey Highlands School serves a diverse body of students from the Highlands and Downtown areas of Monterey Park. The population is broken down to about 64% Asian, 31% Hispanic, 4% Caucasian, and 1% African American.
School uniforms
Students in kindergarten to eighth grade are required to wear school uniforms [1].
The policy, which applied to the Alhambra School District, began in September 1996. The policy remained after the consolidation of ASD and AHSD, with the policy applying to all Kindergarten through 8th grade students.
Renovation
Around the beginning-middle of 2007, renovation began on the Monterey Highlands school campus. The renovation included adding a new computer lab, adding an elevator and upgrading the fire alarm system with a new alarm system. All renovation was completed towards the end of August 2007.
