Camp Rock is a 2008 Disney Channel Original Movie. The musical is written by Julie Brown, Paul Brown, Regina Hicks and Karen Gist. The movie is directed by Matthew Diamond and produced by Alan Sacks. On January 25, 2008, during the commercials for Minutemen it was announced that Camp Rock would debut on June 20, 2008.[2]. Camp Rock will be the first DCOM to air on ABC Family, and online after it's premiere on Disney Channel. The movie stars the Jonas Brothers and introducing Demi Lovato for her first lead role in a film.

Plot

Camp Rock tells the rock n' roll Cinderella story of Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato), a teen with an amazing voice and a driving ambition to be a pop singer who wants to spend her summer at a prestigious rock camp. Unfortunately, an expensive music camp is a bit out of reach for her family, but her mother gets a job as Camp Rock's cook so that Mitchie can attend as long as she helps out in the kitchen between classes. Befriended by fellow camp member Caitlyn (Alyson Stoner) but intimidated by the immensely talented Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin) and her friends Peggy (Jasmine Richards) and Ella (Anna Maria Perez de Tagle), Mitchie lives a double life hiding that she is the chef's daughter and posing as a well-to-do camper in order to become part of the hottest clique at camp. Her double life is discovered by Caitlyn, and then later Tess, Tess uses Mitchie's secret against her and manages to get Mitchie banned from all camp activities. When she's overheard singing, but not seen, by teen pop star and celebrity camp instructor, plus lead singer of Connect Three, Shane Gray (Joe Jonas), he is completely taken aback and sets out to find the girl behind the beautiful voice. Meanwhile, Mitchie will have to learn how to confront her fears, step out of the kitchen and into the spotlight where she belongs.

Production

The Jonas Brothers were considered for the main roles, though casting directors struggled to choose who would play teen popstar Shane Gray before the part eventually went to Joe Jonas. Brenda Song has a cameo as a girl near the lake, similar to Miley Cyrus' cameo in High School Musical 2 as a girl seen at the pool. On Disney Channel Latin America, in the Latin American version of Happy U Year, titled Celebración 2008, it showed many scenes of Camp Rock, and the song, "We Rock", with scenes of other Disney Channel Original Series and Disney Channel Original Movies as Phineas and Ferb, J.O.N.A.S. and The Cheetah Girls One World, among others.

On April 19, 2008 was the trailer premiere on Disney Channel Latin America, on April 25, 2008 was the We Rock music video premiere and on May 9, 2008 was the Play my Music music video premiere on Disney Channel Latin America. Certain scenes were filmed on location at Camp Wanakita and Kilcoo Camp in the Haliburton Highlands, kids were present who were extra's and had to eat food provided by the Disney Corporation Ontario, Canada. Previews of Camp Rock started being shown on April 6, 2008 during the Wizards of Waverly Place marathon. The music video for "We Rock" was shown on April 19, 2008 as a part of Disney's Night of Premieres.

Cast

Characters

The cast of Camp Rock in the "Final Jam" in the movie, performing We Rock, main cast, from left to right starting from the front row: Joe Jonas, Demi Lovato, Meaghan Jette Martin, Andrea Fowler, Jordan Francis, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, and Roshon Fegan.

  • Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) is the female protagonist of the movie. She isn't very rich, but she had always wanted to go to Camp Rock. In order to do that, she had to work along with her mother, Connie, in the kitchen and mess halls.
  • Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) is the male protagonist of the movie. He is the lead singer of the band, Connect Three. The other two band members include Nate (Nick Jonas) and Jason (Kevin Jonas). In the beginning of the movie, he is shown to be hot-tempered and rather full of himself. Nate and Jason make Shane come back to Camp Rock, where he first began to love music. As the movie goes on, Shane hears a girl, Mitchie Torres, singing and she reminded him of the music that used to inspire him, and is tempted to find the girl behind the talented voice.
  • Caitlyn Geller (Alyson Stoner) is Mitchie's best friend, and they met at Camp Rock. Caitlyn is the only girl who wasn't mean or rude to Mitchie. She wants to be a producer and is constantly carrying her laptop around. She also has an intense rivalry with and, apparently, a hatred for Tess.
  • Nate (Nick Jonas) is the guitarist and vocalist of the band, Connect Three. He is practical, but sometimes bossy and serious towards his band mates; he's the one who suggested Shane go to Camp Rock.
  • Jason (Kevin Jonas) is the lead guitarist of the band, Connect Three. He is spacey, out there, and the "airhead" of the band.
  • Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin) is the female antagonist of the film. She went to Camp Rock to be "too cool" and wants to be a pop star. She is very popular but very mean to others, especially Mitchie, and even purposely blames Mitchie for stealing her charm bracelet so that she can be banned from all camp activities.
  • Ella (Anna Maria Perez de Tagle) is one of Tess's best friends. She follows Tess around and does whatever she tells her to do, although she isn't as completely mean as Tess. Ella is the girly girl of the mean girl clique; she's obsessed with lip gloss and nail polish. One of the reasons why she is friends with Tess is because she wants to be popular. She's also supposedly dumb, as seen in the trailer, where she has a dilemma of choosing between two nail polish the exact same color.
  • Peggy Warburton (Jasmine Richards) is one of Tess's best friends and is part of Tess' group. She isn't quite as cruel as Tess but is still more so than Ella. Other than tagging along with them, she dreams of being a famous guitarist and singer.
  • Connie Torres (Maria Canals) is Mitchie's mother. She is supportive of Mitchie's dreams, and got her in Camp Rock. She is the cook of the camp.
  • Lola Scott (Aaryn Doyle) is a talented singer, who has been going to Camp Rock for a long time and becomes friends with Caitlyn, Barron, Sander, and Mitchie.
  • Barron (Jordan Francis) is a Latino mischief maker at Camp Rock and best friend of Sander. He and Sander want to be reggaeton singers.
  • Sander (Roshon Fegan) is the best friend of Barron and camper at Camp Rock. He is a reggaeton singer like Barron.
  • Andy (Giovanni Spina) is a camper at Camp Rock who becomes friends with Barron and Sander. He would like to be a drummer.
