Edward Speleers is going to play the lead role in "Eragon", the adaptation of Christopher Paolini's fantasy novel. Edward Speleers is a 17-year-old public schoolboy, with no acting experience beyond amateur school productions, has been plucked from obscurity to win the most coveted role of the year. Edward Speleers is a boarder at Eastbourne College and beat 180,000 hopefuls to land the title role, a multi-million pound screen version of the novel. Eragon knocked Harry Potter off the top of the best-seller list two years ago. "You could say that Ed is Eastbourne College's leading man. He's just got this amazing charisma," his drama teacher Tim Marriot says. 'Recently he's played Richard III and Hamlet in school plays.' Edward is the only child of Essex-based financial consultant John Speleers, 62, who is divorced from his mother, who now lives in Spain.

20th Century Fox is eyeing a June 16, 2006 release date for the Stefen Fangmeier-directed film.
